Semisonic - This Will Be My Year Lyrics

Thursday's crush
Is a Friday night rush
And a Monday morning cry
It's the tail that you keep chasing
And it gets away every time

New Year's Eve
And it's hard to believe
Another Zodiac's gone around
While you drank yourself high on hoping
And watched the ceiling spin from the ground

Counting down from ten
It's time
To make your annual prayer
Secret Santa in the sky
When will I get my share

Then you tell yourself
What you want to hear
Cause you have to believe
This will be my year

Pound your fist
And cross it off your list
But you know you're not that strong
When the man at the stop light catches you
Singing along to a brand new song

Well maybe it's trash
Or the overnight smash
That brings a ship crashing through your wall
So you can make your grand departure
From a world getting way too small

One wheel in the ditch
Another spinning in the air
Put your pedal down to the floorboards
But you're not getting anywhere

Then you tell yourself
What you want to hear
Cause you have to believe
This will be my year

This will be my year
This will be my year
This will be my year

There's a conversation about Closing Time below - IMO Closing Time got the airplay it did because it literally became the song that bars would play when they closed and it gave people a lot of hazy boozy vaguely good feeling memories as a result.  I think Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" is a more recent analogue - it captures a party moment.  It's not a terrible song, it's just not the strongest song on the album.

Like everyone else here, this is one of my new years' songs. Thanks for posting it.

Always listen to this tune on NYE

  20. D.... A....

Semisonic: incredible band as a while and Dan's prowess as an unstoppable songwriter is undeniable... however, this song in particular was written by drummer, Jake Slichter...give the drummer some ;-)

    D.... A....

jake is seriously SUCH an underrated drummer! dude is a total monster! the drumming on "completely pleased" is still so ahead of its time!

  21. H.... M....

    This will be my year!!!

  22. A.... ....

    long live semisonic

  23. x.... ....

    ahh..great song..great band

  24. J.... M....

Years come and go, this is still wonderful. I get very happy reading you nice people liking and commenting it. Regardless of the point of view, this is a great song. Happy another new year, everyone! May your wishes come true.

Dan Wilson is one of the greatest songwriters of the 1990s, and probably the most underrated. There's a reason he writes for Adele today. Feeling Strangely Fine had so many songs on it that deserved just as much (if not more) airtime than Closing Time. Especially this one, She's Got It All Worked Out and very especially Never You Mind.

    J.... M....

Absolutely agree! Just an FYI, this is the rare Semisonic song that was written by Jake Slichter, the drummer.

  25. T.... C....

This was my #1 album from the age of 12 until I was 16... I knew I had good taste. Well said @Pikeman327

  26. D.... L....

I never gave this band a chance until today, because "Closing Time" was such weeny, wussy piece of crap, and still is. This is a very good band, I just don't know how, or why "Closing Time" got the airplay it did, and that's all I cared to hear from them, but whoah! The rest of the stuff I heard is far superior, you never can tell what passes for good, or passes for crap.

  27. z.... ....

@mfgodwin I agree with your synopsis.

  28. s.... ....

Lol its new years eve and i just found this song. This will be my year.

  29. z.... ....

This song is the epitome of New Year's Eve!

  30. J.... S....

One of the best albums ever.

    J.... S....

I think that. Such a great album to just have on in your house.

  31. M.... ....

@ulaol10 Songs never die. Last year, I requested to a radio station to play Closing Time by Semisonic and they didn't have that album, so I went on Amazon and bought them some Semisonic and Third Eye Blind albums and they still play them occasionally.

  32. M.... ....

@janainadmorais0 Not even close. This has been my favorite band for over a year now!

  33. M.... G....

@janainadmorais0 Wow, I had the exact opposite reaction to this song. I've always interpreted the lyrics as reflecting the misery of someone who wants desperately for something to go his way, for life to get better. As each year draws to a close, he allows himself to feel slightly optimistic that the next year won't suck so bad - while knowing all the while that this optimism is just a soothing lie: "You tell yourself what you want to hear, 'cause you have to believe this will be my year."

  34. p.... ....

This is a song that sounds upbeat and happy, but the lyrics are absolutely brutal. Dan Wilson is a genius and one of the most underrated songwriters of his generation, and Feeling Strangely Fine was one of the best albums of the 90's. The fact that most people only know Semisonic for Closing Time is one of the great tragedies of modern pop music.

    p.... ....

    I agree

  35. S.... G....

Absolutely A Wonderful Song, yeah it brings back a lot of memories to me, i used to hear this one time after time, i always wanted to play it, maybe i will someday. Thank´s for the remainding.
