VERY well put Joe Kac. I totally agree with everything you wrote here. I've been on this earth 51years now. In my opinion Bob Seger is the best or at least one of the best song writers EVER. I can relate to just about every song he has ever written in some way or another and im sure as we all can.

The full albums Ivory, Noah, Mongrel and brand new morning are here on you tube. Listen to the song "railroad days." It's from the album "Brand new morning. It's by Bob Seger. No band, just Bob Seger and an acoustic guitar. Apparantly, at the time, America wasn't ready for a mellow Bob Seger and it was unsuccessful. So was the tour. But it has some great music on it.

This song is memorable and picturesque! It is sad but can reveal such truth! It's one of my favorites. But then I have so many of Seger Favorites! Wish he had done more videos. His videos were all done well. A video on this would have been done great too.

The thing about Bobs music is that MOST of us can relate to his Lyrics, It's as if WE us Seger fans came up with these Lyrics are selves, Having gone thru or Experienced the SAME message He's singing about !! I agree 100%. When young and in love, you never see the forest for the trees. The song is a classic case of hindsight always being 20/20. If you continue down the path you've set yourself, what else can happen? Very tragic. She misses the man she fell for; what she sees 20 years later ain't what she had 20 years prior.

This album from Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet band "Like a rock" is one of the all-time best. Great job guys. Keep up the wonderful work.
He and I are close on age. Yeah, this super man is in his early 70's. Hope you have had a chance to see his awesome performance. In St. Louis 35K people were on their feet after the first song and nobody sat down for 2 2/12 hours.
This is really a story of how two people can have pure intentions and still somehow find themselves in a tragic situation, as is summarized well when she looks out the window, dreaming of what life she could have had. The morale: life is very, very complicated, and sometimes tragic, if you don't follow those dreams that you feel deep in your soul. Only a songwriter as soulful as Bob could make a song like this.

She looks at his picture but not the ring because she loves him but hates the life she has had with him. At least that's my interpretation--probably Seger left it ambiguous on purpose.

As only Seger could do it. Been one of my favs for years. He is on tour again and if he is anywhere near, he is still a MUST SEE. In his '70's and still doin' it right.
@ACfixer Wasn't that she picked the wrong guy; they were both too young when they married. He settled for it but she never did. It's still about loyalty and small town virtues / frustrations.

I assumed it was because she picked the wrong guy, or at least the wrong life. But.... she did the right thing and stood by her husband despite her list dreams. Killer song!
@ACfixer she doesn't look at the ring because she's too busy looking at *his* picture and looking out the window lost, drifting and dreaming of the one she passed on... her TRUE love. SHE REALIZES SHE CHOSE THE WRONG DUDE! At least that is my humble interpretation of the lyrics... admittedly I've a biased perspective because I been living this song daily for over 26 years. For you see, I am "the bird on the wing" (a Harley passing by late at night) Hope that helps make this song make sense 4 u!

The other version of this song I'm assuming is a demo featuring the Silver Bullet Band, additional lyrics, a B3 later replaced by strings, and a rough sounding mix. while this version (studio version) has much more focused playing for a slicker sound.
