Seger, Bob - East Side Story Lyrics

Beneath the bare light bulb above
She gazed into the eyes of love
Bathed in the dirty neon lights
She begged him "don't go out tonight"
If we work out somehow maybe
We could find a way out baby
And he laughed and said "I got to go"

And she cried "no"
Johnny Johnny no
Oh Johnny Johnny no

His arms were warm and strong and young
"I promise I won't hurt no one"
"Oh baby when you gonna learn,
Them folks uptown got bread to burn,

When they see me flash my knife,
They'll be fearin' for their live,
They won't give me trouble this I know"
And she cried no
Oh Johnny Johnny no
Johnny Johnny no

[organ solo]

The night passed like a thousand years
The tenemant room had culled her tears
Then came a knock upon the door
Two men she'd never seen before

"Did you know Johnny Brown miss?
We hate to tell you this but
Has he a relative you know?"
And she cried no
Oh Johnny Johnny no
Oh Johnny why'd you go?

  6. D.... G....

I forgive Bob for ripping off "Gloria" since he a) admitted his influence, and b) wrote so many better songs than "Gloria" afterward.

    D.... G....

@Don Gilbert Half the songs in rock are a rip off of Gloria

    D.... G....

@Steve Jonesin' [E   AD] that's all it is

    D.... G....

+Don Gilbert Way better song than Gloria.

    D.... G....

Exactly my thoughts when I heard it, but goddam good!!

  9. M.... ....

Typically amazing vocal performance from Bob!

    M.... ....

Given he was lip syncing to the album yes it was!

  10. G.... M....

no mikes ...everything was lip synched back then.....Bob, however....sounded GREAT live ....I saw him do this song in 1968 or so....Notre Dame High School dance...WOW !!...I don't think this song ever left Michigan...just like Bob...forever a Michigan boy...

    G.... M....

@Nun Ya Pine Knob on the hill was always a great place to be!  Saw over 70 shows there the summer I graduated from Brandon.... no comment how we got in so many times :)

    G.... M....

Many a show myself, though not approaching your lucky total--Party on the hill--marshmallow fights and all.

    G.... M....

@Nun Ya I never got to go to the "hill". At least some kids did :) I envy you seeing Bob at the knob ;)

    G.... M....

Bob at the Knob...that's very Michigan, too. The whole H.S. dance experience in '68 surpasses, WambliPeta.

    PEACE.

    G.... M....

    @Nun Ya
Back at ya brother. Thank you :)

Psychotic Reaction meets Animals. But Seger's voice is powerful.

  17. i.... ....

I was thinking it was more like Gloria by Them, but that's pretty close to the Animals....the part where he sings "Johnny, Johnny, no..." sounds like the prechorus to It's My Life, though, so you're on to something there...

  18. N.... ....

Great sound. Rockin' song. Damn, Seger goes WAY back! He's made so much great music for so long. Totally underrated.

  19. J.... M....

Great song, thanks for posting this. I see Bob and Pep but is that Dan on the bass?

  20. m.... ....

always loved this cameo/parkway 45, this is THE GREATEST ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS KINDA TUNE EVER WRITTEN. which is to say, as great or greater than any 45 ever recorded during the 1964-1969 "beatles/stones 60's" etc.

  21. p.... ....

    great footage!

  22. e.... ....

@wallosund Hey, didn't say there was anything wrong with trying to sound like another artists, being inspired by other artists...there'd be nearly no new artists if that were the case...for what has been, is what will be (probably Ch. 3 of Ecclesiastes Holy Bible). I love this version, I love Van Morrison's also. Yeah, of course a lot of 60's bands sounded quite similiar, a lot of 2000/2010 bands sound quite similiar as well, it's called "style" or "fads", dig??

this is amazing, thanks for sharing! =)

  28. D.... E....

Trying to sound like THEM (Van Morrison's early band), of course Bob admitted on live recordings to owing a large debt for inspiration to Van the Man!

  29. a.... ....

I can never forget The Sugar Shack in Columbus, Ohio. This was such a long time ago. Thanks
