Seekers, The - The Hammer Song (If I Had A Hammer) Lyrics

If I had a hammer I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening all over this land
I'd hammer out danger I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Well if I had a bell I would ring it in the morning
And I would ring it in the evening all over this land
I'd ring out danger I'd ring out a warning
I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Now if I had a song I would sing it in the morning

I would sing it in the evening all over this land
I'd sing out danger I'd sing out a warning
I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Well I've got a hammer and I've got a bell
And I've got a song to sing all over this land
It's a hammer of justice it's a bell of freedom
It's a song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land
All over this land

Seekers, The The Hammer Song (If I Had A Hammer) Comments
  1. B.... M....

Rune Larsen did this song best.

  2. a.... a....

This reminds me of camp ❤️

  3. J.... T....

I adore the Seekers...always have...but I think they miss the mark here

  4. K.... S....

    I love them

    K.... S....

Kim Simonsen You can love them, but I love American Quartet and Peerless Quartet

  5. P.... M....

Great song during my early years in the 1960's Civil Rights movement that contrasted with the Vietnam War.

  6. D.... K....

    Is Keith singing lead?

  7. m.... b....

There is a lack of dynamism

  8. A.... L....

Totally different key to other recordings. Listen to PPM and you will understand.

  9. B.... ....

The Seekers' version is very much like the original recording by The Weavers in 1949.

  10. T.... ....

Judith Durham leading the vocals would have made the Seekers version much better.  Judith's voice is absolutely incomparable!

  11. J.... S....

If I had a hammer nowadays, I would throw it into my ceiling over my bedroom first.

  12. O.... ....

Very good slower version to the excellent Trini Lopez version.

    O.... ....

    Don't forget Peter;Paul & Mary........!

    O.... ....

@rudolf remy Also don't forget about the original version by The Weavers. They recorded it twice in late 1949. The first version wasn't released, but the second was, in early 1950.They recorded it again in 1963, at one of their concerts. All three versions are available for us to enjoy. The song was written in 1949 by one half of The Weavers -- Pete Seeger and Lee Hays.

+Oggie60   For something different check out The Small Faces rendition.  I think youll like it.  I do

  13. L.... ....

I like this version. I enjoy the straightforward and natural way The Seekers interpret music. Peter Paul & Mary were very good, but like other groups, they often over-dramatized for my taste.

    L.... ....

PP and M were always in anti-war mode when they sang these songs. The Seekers always seem to see a more positive side. This is why there Blowin in the Wind is also more upbeat, I think.

  14. U.... ....

    Jeremy Clarkson's theme song.

  15. d.... ....

Judith: A wonderful gift from Mother Nature.

    Thanks for posting.

  16. d.... ....

    Judith: Voice of an Angel.

    Thanks.

    d.... ....

dick12235 No she had/ have NOT. The female singer Aileen Stanley (most popular female snger in world in the 1920s) had voice of an agel because she was a christian and God blessed her with voice of an angel.

  17. E.... M....

The popular version of this song was by Peter, Paul and Mary in the mid sixties. It was big then.

  18. J.... E....

Bonita composición! hermosa voz de la cantante y armonioso el grupo, me gustó mucho como tocan esta canción!

  19. s.... ....

Why would you post such a claim that can be so easily disproven?

  20. R.... J....

    Watching in 2013!

  21. J.... E....

uff q linda cancion!!! divina interpretacion!!!

  22. m.... ....

Pete Seeger wrote the music for "The Hammer Song," and Lee Hays wrote the lyrics. It was performed by Bobby Darin in 1963, but originally released by The Weavers in 1949.

madamerotten Also recorded by Rune Larsen

Dazbluey ... you rock!! ... thanks for posting

  24. J.... R....

The Seekers were Australasia's answer to Peter, Paul and Mary.

    J.... R....

jcrobso Best trio ever is Sterling trio no protest.

If I had a Hammer was composed exclusively by Bobby Darin. Bobby once said, he was singing in a small bar songs that people could sing along with & the audience was booing & making fun of him. Bobby had composed 1000's of songs. The original Elvis voice was that of Bobby Darin. His heart was failing him & e had diabetes & on biplar drugs. He didn't understand the audence. He composed for Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, bands, etc. He felt a new age coming on. Bobby could read prophecy

  26. C.... O....

We used to sing this song in the early 1970's! Loved it then, and love it just as much today. Judith's voice is so calming, and sweet. I could listen to the Seekers all day long!! Good job!

  27. B.... M....

    Hammering Home Harmony.
    Outstanding Oldie!!!
    Love- Between Brothers And Sisiters.

  28. r.... ....

Judith was always a significant part of the Seeker's sound. The song that first really "hit the charts" in Canada was (as my aging brain recalls) "A World ofOur Own". This was followed by Morning Town Ride and others where Judith was hardly harmony. I still have a number of their early albums and Judith was always "there". No slight to Keith, Bruce and Athol who more than did their part. Over the years I have seen Bruce's name pop up in many roles that kept the genre moving.

  29. i.... ....

i like the seekers but they got this all wrong..

  30. M.... ....

Seems their earlier songs featured the men more and Judith was just part of the harmony.

  31. J.... ....

@Vicka50 - The Seekers were, from left to right, Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley, Judith Durham and Athol Guy.
BTW - Bruce Woodley co-wrote "Red Rubber Ball" with Paul Simon.

  32. V.... I....

    What are these folks names?

  33. V.... I....

    Who are the Seekers?

  34. A.... ....

If I had a hammer, and government were a bell... you'd hear that ring all over the Earth.

  35. J.... D....

    i luv mary!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. m.... ....

this version is superb (of course)!

  37. m.... ....

Dazbluey where do you find these songs? Anyway thanks for posting this great and unusual version.... these are greatly appreciated.... Ron, Tennessee
