Seekers, The - The Gypsy Rover Lyrics

Whistling Gypsy came over the hill
Down thru the valley so shady
He whistled and he sang
Till the greenwood rang
And he won the heart of a lady

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
He whistled and he sang
Till the greenwood rang
And he won the heart of a lady

She left her father's castle gate
She left her fair young lover
She left her servants
And her estate
To follow the gypsy rover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
She left her servants
And her estate
To follow the gypsy rover

She left behind her velvet gown
And shoes of Spanish leather
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang
As they rode off together

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang
As they rode off together

Last night she slept on a goose feather bed
With silken sheets for cover
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover

Her father saddled up his fastest steed
And roamed the valleys all over
Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover

He came at last to a mansion fine
Down by the river Claydee
And there was music
And there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
And there was music
And there was wine
For the gypsy and his lady

"He is no gypsy my father" she said
"But lord of these lands all over
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover"

A dee do a dee do die day
A dee do a dee day-o
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover"

Seekers, The The Gypsy Rover Comments

Hello from Berlin, Germany. Heard this song first when i was in Scotland, and my boyfriend and me were invited to a funeral. First day in Scotland, and a funeral but yes it is true. We had much fun, and afterwards we would sing this one all the time 😍👍

  2. M.... R....

I sing a version and mix it up to fit with a Queensland drover instead of the gypsy rover, just for fun. Lovely and pretty little ditty.

Hello from Berlin, Germany. Do the Seekers really come from Australia??? I would have bet they come from Britain...Who knows more? Love them and can sing with them 😍

    C.... K....

    Classic Aussie Song I figure...

    N.... M....

    No, Irish.

  6. K.... B....

Bruce was pretty good - on the banjo in this one! And Judith's piano wasn't included in their music for some strange reason!

  7. D.... O....

How in the fuck do I know this song? From my childhood somewhere but I can't recall where. I just randomly got this song in my head so I googled the words. I'm 38 and although it hasn't entered my mind for at least 30 years I hummed it then sang it and knew all the words.

  13. C.... K....

Hello from Berlin, Germany. This song is so wonderful. When I was on a Tonga island, people asked me to sing something, and i did sing this one. And some others in German. Then they sang their songs, we had much fun.

    C.... K....

Claudia Katz-Palme It's amazing how uplifting a song performed like this can be. One cannot be in a bad mood after singing a song like this. It seems to get down right into your soul!

  14. V.... P....

Hey, I remember this now. Never knew words but I was saying "Ah Dee do Ah Dee do da day" or whatever.

  15. F.... K....

We were singing this song in sch 1968 growing up
In a isolated island with only 2000 people love the seekers

  16. J.... W....

I first heard this great song at a party back in 1967. Someone brought along a Seekers album with this song on it. Before long, we were all singing it. One of the guys had a guitar and we all joined in singing this song. I know we didn't sound anywhere as good as the Seekers, but it sure was fun. No drugs or alcohol, but we were all high!

    J.... W....

whish I would have been there

  17. s.... ....

Although none of us could whistle much of a tune, my dorm mates and I loved playing our guitars and singing this. . . over 5 decades ago. . . THANK YOU for uploading!

    s.... ....

United States Army. A buddy and I would break out the acoustics and do this song. Always fun. Some music is nice to listen to but a drag to play. Really dull and boring to play. Not so with these guys. Right there with ya, bro. Lots of memories with this band.

  18. N.... K....

I always thought he said 'til the green grocer rang', lol.

  19. P.... N....

Always liked this song. Heard it by the highwaymen and Kingston Trio. Problem here is the guys are doing most of the singing.

    P.... N....

They're entitled once in a while!

    P.... N....

I think this song was one of the rare ones where Judith was better off in the chorus. Would have been okay if she were on lead too, but there's a reason they had Bruce sing that part.

    P.... N....

    @Lee Anne P. AND they are under-rated-ish.
However they combined to do this song they'd have been good, methinks.

  20. R.... C....

Growing up in the sixties, this was one of my favorites. It has a message if you can under-
stand the nuances and symbols. It's catchy and a good song.

  21. p.... ....

This song is awful. It has as much relevance and integrity in Australian society as Patsy Bisco singing on Fat Cat. I very sad period in Australian music history. America had Bob Dylan and we have this?

    p.... ....

@Martin Rudland You are entitled to your opinion, I stand by mine.

    p.... ....

@Martin Rudland It's funny you say that, I was just in the music office at the school that I teach at - I played my fellow staff the song, and without any prompting they said it was 'awful' and 'naff'.

    p.... ....

where did you come from johnston . . . under a rock ! Bob Dylan had his style . . . but the Seekers had theirs . . . the BEST folk group from anywhere on this planet . . . any group that has had a following of over 50 years can't be awful !

    p.... ....

Why do think it should have "relevance and integrity in Australian society"? It's a song written by Leo McGuire of Dublin, first recorded in 1952, which the Seekers are here covering!

    p.... ....

propositionjohnston , I wonder what kind of music you fellow staff members would consider "good." Anyway, perhaps a million or more people would disagree with your staff, but "to each his own."

  22. J.... S....

Bruce out front with the greatest backing vocals ever recorded. Lotta memories with this song.

  23. S.... O....

I love the Seekers. Beautiful voices and great harmony. You could tell they loved to sing and give the audience joy from their songs

    S.... O....

They are still bringing us joy. I have an Internet Radio Show and if I don't have at least one track of the Seekers in - I am in trouble.

  24. K.... S....

I listen to the wiggles with my 3 and 1 year old. It's actually a little weird how much I listen, I listened to this song and "Bound for South Australia." When I am by myself or in the car. The seekers are one of my all time favorite bands no I listen to both versions alternating. Lol

  25. S.... B....

Wrote in 1950 by Leo Maguire from Dublin as a theme for a radio show.RTE still own the rights to the song .Maybe thats 81% off all songs wrote by the Irish. You can prove me wrong if you wish.

    S.... B....

Steve Burke I remember hearing this song sung by Leo Maguire on the Waltons sponsored radio programme on Radio Eireann. Leo presented the programme of Irish music and song..

  26. J.... C....

I enjoyed this very much. Thank you to annie482000 who gave me a share. God Bless the both of you.♥

  27. b.... ....

The highwaymen own this song as far as I'm concerned.

    b.... ....

    Not at all...

  28. 2.... ....

    I really love. This song

  29. R.... S....

My cousin and I used to sing this song.....or at least I thought we did until I heard this. We weren't even close.

  30. G.... ....

GREAT TO HEAR BRING BACK "HAPPY MEMORIES" GREAT FOLK SONG AS WELL !
