Seekers, The - The Bush Girl Lyrics

So you rode from the range where your brothers select
Through the ghostly grey bush in the dawn
You rode slowly at first lest her heart should suspect
That you were so glad to be gone

You had scarcely the courage to glance back at her
By the homestead receding from view
And you breathed with relief as you rounded the spur
For the world was a wide world to you

Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain
Fond heart that is ever more true
Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain
She'll wait by the sliprails for you

Ah the world is a new and a wide one to you
But the world to your sweetheart is shut
For a change never comes to the lonely bush girl
From the stockyard the bush and the hut

And the only relief from its dullness she feels
Is when ridges grow softened and dim
And away in the dusk to the sliprails she steals
To dream of past meetings with him

Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain
Fond heart that is ever more true
Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain
She'll wait by the sliprails for you

Do you think where in place of bare fences dry creeks
Clear streams and green hedges are seen
Where the girls have lily and rose in their cheeks
And the grass in midsummer is green?

Do you think now and then now or then in the whirl
Of the city while London is new
Of the hut in the bush and the freckled-face girl
Who is eating her heart out for you?

Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain
Fond heart that is ever more true
Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain
She'll wait by the sliprails for you

Those grey eyes that are sadder than sunset or rain
Bruised heart that is ever more true
Fond faith that is firmer for trusting in vain
She waits by the sliprails for you

She waits by the sliprails for you
Waits by the sliprails for you
Just for you

Seekers, The The Bush Girl Comments
  1. K.... M....

What a lessor place music would be without them. So glad to have found them on the net. I will now have a remaining life with great music.

  2. R.... P....

What a beautiful song seekers at there best

  3. j.... k....

There is a great Australian tradition of bush poetry that continues on to this day and what Bruce has done with Henry Lawson's masterful work is beautifully inspired and Judith solidly nails that spirit with her exquisitely sublime delivery. In a similar vein is Hugh McDonald's ''The Diamantina Drover'' superbly done by both Redgum and John Williamson. Australia is a treasure trove of brilliant music. All one has to do is seek and enjoy. jtk🍁Canada

    Love this song,

  5. T.... N....

    Perfection.

  6. S.... B....

They will never be replaced Am I glad that I was born in their era.

  7. O.... S....

The people in that small audience had the greatest singer of all times before them.

  8. M.... k....

I remember the bush the stockyards and the hut, many over the Victorian high plains... all gone now. I miss that culture we had

  9. T.... N....

    Beautiful.

  10. T.... E....

Lovely, it pure and natural. You are wonderful, "The Seekers"

  11. T.... N....

She puts such emotion into her singing, beautiful.

  12. C.... H....

Then Seekers were never "clever" ( I have some reservations about Woodley's transition into the refrain, which is very "obvious" ) but Judith always works her magic. Lord she is truly WOMAN.

  13. B.... C....

This group is a gift to humanity.

  14. I.... T....

God gave this woman a magnificent talent of awesome singing....there really is no one else that can sing like Judith Durham..

  15. K.... G....

When she gets on stage it's 1960s all over again! I know there will never be another Seekers.

  16. B.... B....

This song is beautiful..Judith and the Boys in perfect harmony..xxx

  17. s.... u....

Of the many recorded performances that I have seen and heard by The Seekers throughout their history together, this is my favorite. Judith Durham's heartfelt singing here must certainly be among her finest.

  18. F.... G....

In 1968, during the presidential election here in the USA, I was in school. I wrote on the blackboard: Judith Durtham for president. I still feel she would have made a better president than Humphrey or Nixon. No doubt about that.

  19. J.... B....

one of a kind group. will never be equaled.

  20. J.... D....

    Moving song.

  21. K.... G....

The only other voice that is angelistic like this was the late Karen Carpenter. FANTASTIC!

    @yuri Lemming Thank a lot.

  23. K.... G....

We need more groups like the Seekers and Carpenters. Real music!

  24. G.... C....

One of the most beautiful voices ever.

  25. M.... T....

The Seekers are the greatest singers because they touch the heart

  26. R.... B....

Me neither Mike, though 10 years older, I still remember this remarkable group on their first television appearance in England. They have remained true to their genre and added hugely to the pleasure of millions of listeners and viewer around the globe. They will be sadly missed now that they are gone. But they leave a glittering legacy behind.

  27. R.... B....

Thank you The Seekers for all the wonderful music and singing you have showered us with all of these years. My world has been enhanced by it.

  28. R.... B....

A group in a million. I am out of adjectives to say what i feel abouth The Seekers. They have been my musical friends for over 50 years now. I actually think they are better now than they were in the sixties. What a shame we all have to get older. I am now 77 and dont have enought time left to get my full fill of them. Bravo The Seekers.

  29. F.... H....

    Traumhafte Stimme von Judith.

  30. j.... r....

I have always found this such a sad song but so beautiful. Justin

  31. R.... B....

Perfect. Great to hear good lyrics sung so you can hear them. A fact that seems to elude young singers in this day and age. And melodies with such feeling too.

  32. 7.... ....

Who’s the producer who authorized this recording? What a long & melancholy song. It’ll never sell.
Personally this is a favorite, but the rest of the world will never love it
Thank you, O Internet & O rich963, for letting this jewel get out.

    7.... ....

I love it. One of my favourites. They can do no wrong.

    W.... G....

I agree 100%. What a rare and wonderful talent.

  37. J.... B....

Magnificent tune! First time I've heard this song! Enjoyed the Seekers since I first heard "Georgy Girl" in the '60s! Judith is an angelic treasure!

  38. M.... K....

Who is playing that "click" sound after 1;43...?

    M.... K....

+Markus Kantola It's from the CD (the performance was mimed in the TV studio).

    M.... K....

+rich963 By "mimed" do you mean that Judith lip-synced the song?

    M.... K....

On this occasion - she performs 'live' vocals on most of the other videos I've posted though. Perhaps there was some technical reason why this didn't happen for these performances on the Newcastle Telethon.

  39. M.... T....

I love The Seekers... they're a rarity.. I'm now in my late 60's and I couldn't get over their songs since I first heard them 5 decades ago..

    M.... T....

+Mike Talbat Agreed! Since I first heard "Georgy Girl" in the '60s, Judith's voice and charm captivated me!

    M.... T....

    You and me both!

  40. J.... S....

Music by Bruce Woodley  Lyrics by Henry Lawson.  I must disagree with so many. No tomatoes, please. With age, Judith's voice is so much softer than back in the day. Just listen to the hard edge she had on Allentown Jail or Wreck of the Old 97, or even Eriskay and Cotton Fields. However, NOTHING beats Judith singing Bruce's songs. Particularly this one, which just happens to be one of Bruce's best. Don't you just love how he used 3/4 waltz time? He certainly is one of the greatest poet-songwriters of the past 100 years. Have been one of my favorite bands since early childhood. And still are.

    J.... S....

+James Sero James, you're half right. Bruce provided the musical interpretation, but it was a fellow you probably haven't heard of who wrote the poetry: Henry Lawson, one of the greatest greats.

    J.... S....

+John Peel Thanks Bro. I don't know how you could have missed the first line of my comment: 'Music by Bruce Woodley Lyrics by Henry Lawson'.  I have indeed heard of Lawson. It's rather amazing his poetry was quite lyrical considering he was quite deaf. He had a way of using hooks in his work, for example "beer makes you feel the way you ought to feel without beer" and "our fathers toiled for bitter bread while loafers thrived beside em''' (I love that).  And also, Woodley didn't cease being a poet-songwriter because he didn't write the lyrics to this song. This is a Bruce Woodley song just as much as it is a Henry Lawson song. I'm confident Lawson would approve of what Woodley did to 'their' song. Don't you agree? Again, nothing beats Judith singing Bruce's songs.

    J.... S....

That's told you, John Peel. Judith and the boys have no equals. Been a dedicated fan since day 1 and have been lucky to see them in concert several times.

    J.... S....

That's why I try to reread any comment I want to reply to and if I get really stupid I can click those 3 vertical dots to the right and edit my way back to ''brilliance''...Teehee Love Judith & The Seekers... an important part of my life.

  41. B.... M....

Could you ever get more Aussie than the words of Henry Lawson describing the pioneer's life and sung so beautifully by Judith Durham and the Seekers?

  42. M.... L....

What a beautiful voice. So clear and perfect.

  43. L.... C....

    Judith!!!!!

  44. A.... T....

Judith's voice is so crystal clear, I can make out every word!

  45. J.... A....

    Seekers awsome

  46. D.... S....

seldom hear such guitar work and perfect synchronization these days - if ever!!

  47. k.... h....

  48. l.... ....

    excellent sound!

  49. S.... H....

recomended to rich963 and it is true the sound is perfect for angel judith god gaurd her

  50. A.... ....

    Nother Nice Number from Seekers.

  51. h.... ....

The lyrics for the "Bush Girl" were written by Henry Lawson. It's the faith of a Bush Girl made strong by a lover's song as she watched (waited) by the Sliprail. J. Durham was a Bush Girl. And a Bush Girl's meekness is renowned in overcoming the vanity and pride of the outback and its captive souls. May a Bush Girl's Faith, made ever stronger (firmer)...

May her lover's dream come true,

    Jamieson (Peter)

A Jamieson Note: You had "scarcely the college". A college "sweetheart" Judith
    reveals.hmm

  52. a.... ....

@c47bskytrain Why dont you download it from You tube?

  53. m.... ....

@c47bskytrain I don't know about this live version, but you probably already know that the studio version is on 1997's Future Road album. This is great - the studio one is a little more powerful and moving, I think. Regards.

  54. m.... ....

    Remarkable!

  55. m.... ....

Yes The Seekers are the best group ever...... as is the folk music era of the 50's 60's. We must thank our you tube friends for putting the Seekers and other Folk music out here for us as if they did not it would be hard to find as the radio stations only play what was the big hit by each group or artist. and Folk would probably get lost...... and the Seekers.. well they are just "In A World of Their Own.... that no one else can share...... God bless Them....

  56. A.... G....

@fabfaruk Check out their performance of "INFAY" 2110 on YouTube

    You won't be disappointed!

  57. A.... G....

@fabfaruk Don't worry. There's no energy fade that won't be fixed by better sound and rehearsal. They've still got their chops!

  58. f.... ....

@iowa61 You are dead on here friend. What group, none. This is exactly what popular music should be! I've seen a clip from this year and I'm beginning to worry that the energy might be faiding especially for the guys but God what a great run they have had. I've tried to collect every clip and DVD and CD out there because I want this music to live on throughout at least my lifetime. Ture magic.

  59. J.... M....

    Heartbreakingly beautiful...

  60. r.... ....

@szent47 Egyetértek, Judith egy csodálatos hölgy.

  61. J.... S....

Gyönyörű, nem lehet eleget hallgatni. Judith mint mindig most is CSODÁLATOS !!!

  62. A.... G....

Couldn't have said it better myself! I'm humbled and grateful for the attribute... but truly. What group in pop music history can match these four? The enduring relevance and resonance is extraordinary. May they keep playing and sharing while their health allows...

  63. r.... ....

Inspiring, intelligent, ENDURING, music 40 years on... and more to come from these people.
