Sedaka, Neil - Solitaire Lyrics
There was a man, a lonely man
Who lost his love, thru his indifference
A heart that cared that went unshared
Until it died within his silence
And every road that takes him, takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself, he plays the game
Without the love it always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
A little hope goes up in smoke
There was a man, a lonely man
Who would command the hand he's playing
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
And keeping to himself, he plays the game
Without a love it always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire

Breathtaking in every way.

Come on play with me😊😙
Classic song! Superb lyrics says it all!
Still I have to say Karen Carpenter's version remains the best version I've heard.
I prefer the Karen Carpenter trimmed down version, and I think it's better sung by a woman.
100% agreed!! 👏👏❤❤
Another beautiful song by Sedaka ! This man should be in the rock and roll hall of fame !! 💕
Great Singer Great Song...............................Bill Bickley uk
saw him live a few years back...his love of music and his talent shone through.
Wow. Just wow.
God died really.
WOW WOW WOW !!
Wow! I did not know he wrote this. Karen Carpenter did it justice. This man still has me singing...thank-you Neil for getting me through the hear tbreaks of my youth.
JUst marvellous
Its a bit slow this version but still a good song
Wow... just wow... what can you say about this performance to do it justice.
omg..what a voice...😱
Excelente canción, una remembranza de mi hijo Jesús+
Músicas e Interpretes que nunca serão igualados, incríveis e maravilhosos anos 70!!
beautiful
He’s so amazing ❤️
When somebody sits at a piano, sings with his heart and soul, plays beautifully and performs in a first class fashion, there is only one word to define him: Magnificent. BAR NONE.
I like Neil Sedaka and this is beautiful, but nobody can sing this more emotionally than Karen Carpenter. Then again, I'm typing as I listen and I gotta admit.....it's sweet!!!
John Bettis and/or Richard Carpenter did the right thing by changing some of the lyrics of the Neil Sedaka song, "Solitaire" to make the song more about a man who loses the love of his life due to his indifference to her, rather than about his obsession with card playing.
There was a man, a lonely man
Who lost his love through his indifference
A heart that cared, that went unshared
Until it died in his silence
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And keeping to himself he begins to deal
And still the king of hearts is well concealed
Another losing game comes to an end
And he deals them out again
A little hope goes up in smoke
Just how it goes, goes without saying
There was a man, a lonely man
Who would command the hand he's playing
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
And keeping to himself he begins to deal
And still the king of hearts is well concealed
Another losing game comes to an end
And he deals them out again
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
The lyrics are slightly different to the version done by Karen Carpenter
Ang galing talaga ni Neil Sedaka. Siya yung pinakamagandang version ng Solitaire
The best thing by Sedaka. Beautiful.
He is the most underrated and underappreciated singer/songwriter of his generation. Why he isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame is beyond me. What a beautiful and gorgeous song I have ever heard. Brilliant!
Linda musica
Hi gave a beautiful performance when hi sing in South Africa!!!!!!
Linda musica ...Pena que não tem a tradução para o português..!
Beautiful... I also like it in Elvis and Karen Carpenter's voices
9/2019! Brilliant song writer .. I’ve always loved him. I love what he says about Clay Aiken’s rendition.
O wow!!!!
2019! LIKE!
Wonderful! Great song, great performance, great talent. Thank you Neil for giving us something precious and for eternity.
The Beatles nearly killed him off, but quality will out in the end and his work is sheer quality. I bought The Tra La Days are Over in 1975 produced by 10cc and have been a fan ever since.
What a beautiful haunting song. So sad and lovely.
The sound of God.....
Een vrouw
Love the song.love the singer neil,!🤹♂️🤹♂️🤹♂️🤹♂️🤹♂️
Canção triste porém linda 😍😍😍😍😘
WOW. Best version by a mile. Didn't realise he was that good.
I like Elvis Presley version better.
Elvis's voice much better for this song much more soulful
I swear Neil wrote this song for me.
ELEGANT SONG, ELEGANTLY SUNG, PERFECTION ♥~♥~♥~♥~
Heartbreaker.
There was a woman a lonly woman who did the same
ONE BEAUTIFUL SONG , , SAD YES ,, BUT SO VERY TRUE
Makes Elton John look like a beginner!!!
very nice of words is that song and sad story
Thanks for sharing, shared.
Weird how so many argue & haggle over whose is the definitive version.... It’s an outstandingly brilliant composition, the voice, be it Neil, Karen, Elvis or whoever, just breathe a different personality through it... I think they’re all great versions & enjoy them all! I certainly couldn’t pin it down to one voice... it’s impossible! 👍😊💕
How can anyone dislike this??? Must be deaf or just plain stupid
Hermosísima!!
One of those saddest song for me...
A brilliant performance. The words, the voice, and the emotion he delivers is superb. Victor from Australia.

Andy Williams does a FAR BETTER JOB!

This is me all over I'm 43 living on my own 18 years and so lonely
☀️🙏☀️
Sempre maravilhoso 😍😍😍😍
Bravo, Neil.
King of underrated 20th century singers and artists - so multi dimensional artist Neil Sedaka is - wow wow wow wow fucking wow !!!!!!!!!
I like Elvis Presley version alot better Elvis sung w so much Emotions ,,,,then this guy. Elvis Nailed them all.
Quanta paixão e sentimentos lindo amei
Niel Sedaka....amazing singer....enjoy...this poignant song....sung with so much feelings.......♦️♥️♦️🎵🎵🎶🎵
Sedaka parabéns querido sempre maravilhoso bons tempos 😍😍😍😍🤩
a masterpiece
Another superb song, singer and wonderful lyrics
I thought carpenters was the original on this?
KAREN CARPENTER... the best who sing it...
A ravishing, heart-wrenching song, and the definitive version, which is not always the case when a songwriter sings his own composition. Jane Olivor did a wonderful job 40 years ago, but this is amazing. The alleged gay subtext really seems likely here, though l am sure some of his straight fans will shoot this down.
I played this in hospital were mum died there she died half way through the song It was dad favourite song too so they together now
Linda eu amo
Great performance . One of the best singer and songwriter of his time . Don't understand how he was so under rated ? He hits the high note so well . Great video you could see he wrote this song and he shows it putting his hart and soul into the song . Just wish the forth lead were he's at his best with his high pitch the video producer should have focus on Neil not backing off of him . This his best Video hands down .
Simply one of the greats of pop music. He is under-appreciated by today's audiences. MANY of his songs were big hits for stars like Connie Francis, etc. He deserves to be honored (as does Neil Diamond).
Solitaryo ,
😢😢😢💕💕so poignant 💕✨✨Neil sings with such feeling
BRILLIANT! 👏 Victor from Australia.
Neil sedaka wrote the most beautiful love songs... This song is so touching...🎤😢💕
Linda melodia..!
Absolutely love his music! He was my favorite in the 60s. He was never recognized for the great artist that he was! I wonder why....
Sorry only Karen could sings this.
Elvis has recorded this beautiful song few months before his death.
For me, Mr. Neil Sedaka is God of popular music!
An agonisingly beautiful song ..... gotta say Karen Carpenter's version is equally valid.
One of the best singer, songwriters ever to grace a stage.
Wonder singer
Simply one of the most beautiful, heart-felt songs ever written, impeccably performed, and clearly the best version by Neil with orchestra.
Neil Sedaka has long been one of my favourites. Solitaire has been sung by many artists, but no one sings it like Sedaka.
Having been a loner for a good portion of my adult life (a bachelor) with only an occasional relationship in between, this is one of my personal theme songs...one of the saddest ever written. I can also relate to Billy Dean's "Somewhere in My Broken Heart"--another tear jerker.
What a voice!!
Elvis sings Solitaire like no one else. ❤️👑
No one else but Neil Sedaka
