I don't think that's the right way to interpret this song. Clearly the writer cares about the girl he's written this song for, but he knows that their chance has past and he's in a new relationship now. The message seems to me more like "maybe we could've been something, but it wasn't meant to be". There's no ill-will in the song at all, and the possibility of cheating is not implied in the slightest.
