Seals & Crofts - King Of Nothing Lyrics

When I was 17, I dreamed of being king. And having everything I wanted.
But that was long ago and my dreams did not unfold, so I'm still the King of Nothing.
When I was 17, I dreamed I gave a ring to a pretty queen and then I held her.
But that was slumber's fault for I have no love at all. And I'm still the King of Nothing.

If I could rule, I'd dance my cares away, find romance everyday.
I wouldn't have to listen to this poor fool say,
"I'm the King, I'm the King, I'm the King of Nothing."

Seals & Crofts King Of Nothing Comments
  1. H.... K....

Something very subtle in music from the 60's and 70's that I dearly miss....the background horns.

I was 17 when this came out and had the whole wide world ahead. I married the love of my life four years later, had three boys, got a job I could not dream of, a great house, 8 grandkids so I was the (queen) but the I got an incurable autoimmune disease ten years ago and have done nothing since but rest and everyone left me behind. So now this song really resonates. I’d love to be 17 again and fall in love again.....all of it except that s last part of my life at 62.

On this day in 1974 {September 13th} Seals and Crofts were guests on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'...
At the time the duo didn't have a record on Billboard's Top 100 chart, but they did have three albums on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, 'Seals and Crofts I & II' {at #81}, 'Unborn Child' {at #121}, and 'Diamond Girl' {at #141}...
"King of Nothing" was track two on side one from their sixth studio, 'Unborn Child'...
Five months earlier on May 19th, 1974 "King of Nothing" entered the Top 100 chart at position #86, four weeks later it would peak at #60 {for 1 week} and it spent six weeks on the Top 100...
Between 1972 and 1978 the Los Angeles duo had twelve records on Billboard's Top 100 chart, three made the Top 10 and all three peaked at #6, "Summer Breeze" for 2 weeks in 1972, "Diamond Girl" for 2 weeks in 1973, and "Get Closer"* for 2 weeks in 1976...
James Eugene 'Jim' Seals will celebrate his 78 birthday next month on October 17th, 2019 and Darrell George 'Dash' Crofts turned 79 last month on August 14th, 2019...
    * "Get Closer" featured former Honey Cone member Carolyn Willis...

  14. L.... D....

This song reminds me of my grandfather on my dad's side, who died a few months after I was born. He was an immigrant from Holland, and came through Ellis Island in the 1950s.

My dad told me that he never understood the music that his kids would listen to, but he really enjoyed listening to Seals and Crofts. "King of Nothing" was his favorite song from the group.
I can't help but shed a tear every time I listen to this song.

The ironic part of this song is that was a hit song back in 1974. Which was the year I turned 17.

    B.... P....

Bruce Pappas me too. Loved it! Until I was 45 my dreams did come true. Then I got ill and nothings come true since😪

  29. J.... C....

  30. f.... ....

The 1970s had some great toe-tapping, fun songs, and this is one of them. The 1970s also had some of the greatest duos or groups, with Jim Seals (Oct. 1941- ) & Dash Crofts (Aug. 1938- ) one of them. "The King of Nothing" only hit #60 in 1974. "Hummingbird" (#20, 1973), "Summer Breeze" (#6, 1972) and "Diamond Girl" (#6, 1973) were some of their other great songs. Jim is the older brother of the late Dan Seals (Feb. 1948-Mar. 2009) of "England Dan & John Ford Coley" duo. Dan died at only 61. They had 9 pop singles between 1976 and 1980.

    I was 21.

    P.... M....

That's alright... ;) Music is for all ages.

  46. B.... ....

These guys were kind of wimpy but this song brings back good childhood memories.  It's a nice change from all the deep, horrifying lyrics today like Five Finger Death Punch's Wrong side of heaven.  It's a great song and video but very depressing.  Sometimes you need something like this to lighten things up a bit.

  47. B.... W....

Just a great didde from two great musicians! Jimmy Seals and Dash crofts! So many great tunes!

    B.... W....

    Amazing bring back my memory

super awesome sounds when we were little brother and sisters run throw a field of yellow daisys finish school grow up makes me sad can't find the place no more

  50. J.... G....

1974 was filled with good songs like this where you could actually understand what was being sung. How good it was to be 18 at that time and feel like you're the king of everything! But then reality sets in and you wake up. Life is what you make of it...

    J.... G....

    +John Golofit I hated waking up...it sucks...except music....

    J.... G....

It's not like you can't understand anything now and there were probably songs you couldn't understand then.

    J.... G....

Yep, i was 14 and into am radio...remember them well....I was a king in my kingdom, reality was years off.

  51. T.... ....

Shout out to my youngest twin. Seventeen years old in 2015 and lists this among his favorite songs... that's my boy. :)

  52. c.... f....

    J.... P....

that's a bit sad Jim-I had you pegged with buying a Carpenter's tape to christen your new vehicle.

  62. K.... K....

A very nice song. It describes many of us!!!

    K.... K....

    it's about me!

  63. T.... ....

Ouch . The truth hurts. In love I am - The King Of Nothing. I've tried to dance & sing & cry my cares away, but NO. So this song twinges my agony, I know it's reality. Pleasant as this song is - dreams have not unfolded & the tears well up in my eyes. Meditation doesn't really help either. Optimism kept me hoping for 30 years, now I know that youthful spark of the hope of love has been killed in a train crash. This song is a sentinel in my life and yet I still love it. It had to sung. BRILLIANT

  64. H.... L....

If only they knew how it would turn out huh?

  65. N.... ....

The seventies were an era of refinement, and hope.
