Why did they have to get political…they were doing so well.

Music and all other arts are primarily forms of expression, hence influenced by the political and social context of their time. So, yeah, not just them but any artist can and must get "political" at some point. For instance try "Red Light" by Eddie Murphy or "Ghost Of Tom Joad" by Bruce Springsteen (explained by the man himself during his show in Broadway on October 2018).
