Screaming Trees - Darkness, Darkness Lyrics

Darkness, darkness, be my pillow
Take my head and let me sleep
In the coolness of your shadow
In the silence of your dreams
Darkness, darkness, hide my yearning
For the things that cannot be
Keep my mind from constant turning
Towards the things I cannot see now
Towards the things I cannot see now, now
The things I cannot see now, now

Darkness, darkness, long and lonesome
Is the day that brings me here
I have found the edge of sadness
I have known the depths of fear
Darkness, darkness, oh be my blanket
Cover me with the endless night
Take away, away the pain of knowing
Fill the emptiness of fright now
The emptiness of fright now
Fill the emptiness of fright

Darkness, darkness, be my pillow
Oh take my head and let me sleep
In the coolness of my shadow
In the silence of my dream
Darkness, darkness, be my blanket
Cover me with my endless night
Take away, away the pain of knowing
Fill the emptiness of fright now
Fill the emptiness of fright now
Fill the emptiness of fright

Screaming Trees Darkness, Darkness Comments

I love the Trees and I love The Youngbloods original - but - I think the Trees should have tried it in a lower key to get the most out of Lanegan's voice.

Sorry. Another dud. The original's a masterpeice, only cover worth listening to is Richie Havens'. All the others I've heard today, so far six, they all lack the key ingredient: the desperate passion of urgency without which it's just another decent song. As I said and bears repeating, a dud.

    Grunge is Fuck!!!!

i am a very dedicated fan of the Trees and wouldn't dis them in any way, or this song choice. the original is exquisite, but until the last verse, which is the 'rocking' part, the Trees version doesn't really work. the voice seems to be straining just a bit, and the dynamics of the original do not shine as brightly. Perhaps the vocals are just mixed too forward and clean? the original sounds double tracked, although that may be my imagination. anyway it's certainly not bad, but seems rushed. it a great song choice, but ultimately i would count it as one of the bands' weaker moments. somewhat of a throwaway as opposed to the gem it might have been on other days and different planets, yeah.

One of the best songs ever covered by the best band ever in the most awesome manner ever. Period. Nuke.

MARK is one of the best voices around!!! RESPECT!!!!

  7. E.... F....

Yeah, you can't really appreciate his voice here... he is Mark Lanegan... search some videos or other songs from Screaming Trees...

  8. M.... ....

Never heard of Screaming Trees. But this vocalist is trying too hard or something. He misses the anguish and passion of the original. Robert Plant nailed the emotions perfectly in his version.

    M.... ....

Only totally wrong. Probably THE most under rated. Start discovering EVERYTHING Mark Lanegan has done, and continues to do. You wont be sorry!

    M.... ....

Meh I can't get past Robert plants' wannabe blues voice enough to take his voice seriously especially when he's past his prime and out of led Zeppelin

    Oooh...VERY nice :)
