Scott Walker - The Amorous Humphrey Plugg Lyrics

Hello Mr. Big Shot
Say, you're looking smart
I've had a tiring day
I took the kids along to the park

You've become a stranger
Every night with the boys
Got a new suit
That old smile's come back
And I kiss the children good night
And I slip away on the newly waxed floor

I've become a giant
I fill every street
I dwarf the rooftops
I hunchback the moon

Stars dance at my feet
Leave it all behind me
Screaming kids on my knee
And the telly swallowing me
And the neighbor shouting next door
And the subway trembling the roller-skate floor

I seek the buildings blazing with moonlight
In Channing Way
Their very eyes seem to suck you in with their laughter
They seem to say

You're all right now
So stop a while behind our smile
In Channing Way

Oh to die of kisses
Ecstasies and charms
Pavements of poets will write that I died
In nine angel's arms

And they all were smiling
Still seductive as sin in their eyes
The man I had been
No more hard luck stories to wear
Nothing left to give
Why the hell should I care

Ann owns my smile and Mary's my shadow
In Channing Way
And with her cellophane sighs
Celina the candle
Begs me to stay

You're all right now
So stop a while behind our smile
In Channing Way

    Awesome 👏. Scott Engel. RIP.

  2. j.... B....

    Malher and Pop is Scott

  3. v.... ....

I know Scott was present when Susanne Sundfør performed his song.. i sure hope he liked it. Rip Scott. Another Great Ray of light has left us..

  4. j.... ....

listen to Chris Connelly sing this on his own debut album from '91, Whiplash Boychild, and then listen to the whole thing, it is as brilliant as anything of its time or since

  5. H.... S....

Something about the word "telly" really fascinates me.
It seems such a mundane word for a song by such a fantastic singer/ songwriter/ performer but just seems so "right" at the same time.
    Marvelous song

    H.... S....

Herbie Shine It shows how British he had become - most Americans would have said T.V. 👏

  6. J.... G....

words just cannot explain the uniqueness of this beautiful song.....it has haunted my soul since 1968....

  7. w.... j....

Beautiful man beautiful voice ❤️ RIP Scott 💔 You have become a giant - outstanding creator of sound 👏 I’m sure the nine angels were smiling 😃😢

    MAJESTIC.

  9. J.... A....

Hi again,....I was Humphrey in the 80's....xxxxfool, nearly lost everything. Should have listened closer to Scott.

  10. P.... ....

I'm stunned. I had no idea he had died. Saw him several times with the Walker Brothers and solo. This is an outstanding song - musically and lyrically - as well as an incredible performance. 😢😢😢😢

  11. B.... M....

It's an odd song in that it seem to switch narrators after a few verses. Starts off with "Mrs Plugg" talking about her day, then switches to what "Mr Plugg" has been up to while he's out?

  12. A.... ....

I too thought it was enchanting way....so now I have to review the whole song. This is on my top five list of Scott songs. With the passage of time his own compositions are the ones I turn to repeatedly! Always coming back to you was the flip side of Joanna and I have to say even back then I played it more than the hit that was Joanna. I think I must have been quite a nice 14 year old struggling to understand some quite adult stuff. I am so glad it was Scott who grew me up! Dylan too!!

  13. g.... ....

Extraordinary song..... intriguing in many ways....... Great imagery in the lyrics + amazing musical arrangement....... One of my favourites stopping a while in Channing Way!!

  14. C.... M....

The greatest song of all time

watch this movie, beautiful and reflective, "shun li and the poet", italian of 2011...

and, finally, read this magnificent book, of the genial and dear, sándor márai... by your refined good taste, you will adore everything, really...

    bravo! : )

  16. s.... ....

OH, guidofski, how are you holding up? Shock, denial & anger over here.

  17. P.... T....

My bucket list is forever incomplete with his passing.
Loved him from the first day I ever heard him sing in 1966.
Thought I'd get to see him one more time. RIP Scott.

    P.... T....

so many people loved him from around the whole world.....including me here in little ol Tasmania......

  18. r.... ....

    Masterful. R.I.P. Scott x

  20. R.... R....

I always wondered who influenced the crooner aspect of Bowie's vocals. Now I know. RIP SW

    R.... R....

only to an extent. The actual primary influence on that was Anthony Newley.

    R.... R....

@Richard Cameron Thanks for this, man you can really hear it. had never heard of Newley before

  21. J.... C....

Your songs will become a star in the musical firmament and you will shine eternally.

  22. A.... P....

So sad to hear of Scott’s death. Love you scott

  27. M.... S....

the one that walks by not seeing anything .... a love to be a one seeing the children... tha t need to be loved and taught ........ how to become who they will b e.... need ing to be a one loved ..... finding them...... not set aside......... the man tha t shows up for them.... is the winner they will love and remember ... try to be like you the one tha t showed up for them..... they will as well.... be a one like you ...

    M.... S....

Melissa, why do you post? Do you really need to see yourself talk? This kind of validation is over-rated.

  28. P.... S....

    Masterpiece!

  29. M.... S....

the guy that has it all figured out ........ the one that makes it ...... found him self ........ the success ........ that could give himm everything ...... accept what matters ..... live to be what he wanted to be ... a one that had .... llove .......... and to live as a normal one ......

  30. S.... S....

my all-time favorite scott walker track, only second to plastic palace people. the imagery, the arrangements... unmatched.

    S.... S....

    my thoughts EXACTLY>>>>>>

  31. D.... R....

Bowie and Walker The Voices are the best and great 👍 of magic music 🎶

  32. s.... ....

Funny: there's a street in Berkeley, Ca. near the university named "Channing Way"

    s.... ....

Well, that's fitting...a lot or orgiastic behavior going on near that campus...

    s.... ....

It is actually "Enchanting Way." Whoever wrote the lyrics on those online lyric websites have it wrong. I have original music for piano from the late 1960's with lyrics to this song. It says Enchanting Way, not Channing Way.

  33. B.... P....

So loving this!!! Thank you. :)

  34. T.... J....

    “That old smiles come back”

  35. s.... ....

    Fucking genius.

  36. R.... T....

Incredibly beautiful and mysterious song. Always thought the lyrics went: “Annuls my smile and marries my shadow”..

    R.... T....

he says "Ann knows my smile and Mary's my shadow" hes describing women

  37. g.... ....

what a fabulous voice always been and will be a fan

  38. T.... ....

Is it possible Scott intentionally chose the name of the place to be "Channing Way" as a sort of play on words so that "In Channing Way" would sound close to "enchanting way?"

    T.... ....

That’s what I sang until last years Prom and I read it on the TelePrompTer! Clever boy our Scott.

    T.... ....

I always thought it was 'enchanting ways'.

    T.... ....

For decades I assumed it "enchanting ways" in his American accent. Even though that didn't make much sense, I took it to be that. When I found it was Channing Way, I was floored.

  39. E.... m....

One of his best songs from the ‘67 - ‘70 period. A kitchen sink drama set to song. Epic internal lives within ordinary people living day to day. Nobody has done that kind of songwriting better than him. Love his music both from then and now.

    E.... m....

    Exactly !!!

  40. S.... A....

    great song great singer
came here from susanne sundfor cover
    remindes me somewhat of bowie

    S.... A....

Ditto, I've watched Susanne's performance countless times recently and have become a big fan of hers

    S.... A....

scott was a hero of bowie and they are both of many

  41. P.... M....

I always thought it was "Enchanting Way", and the CD - released in 2000 - has the lyrics, and agrees.
I admit that it sounds like either.

  42. A.... R....

Wonderful phrasing! Why the discordant backing part around 2.30?

    A.... R....

My take on that, is that it's deliberate. Humphrey Plugg purports to have a perfect life, but there's a malevolent undertone to his character and a bit of a double life going on.The discordant blare (which happens twice) is a musical warning to us, that all is not quite as you think. Scott is definitely clever enough to do that in a song. It works for me.

  43. J.... H....

Definitely Channing Way to my ears . . .

  44. W.... T....

    Brilliant if underrated track.

  45. M.... ....

    fucking perfection

    M.... ....

Connelly? He's my favorite working songwriter ... Never heard of Scott Walker before Whiplash Boychild, shame on me but ,,, oh well, such is life, much prefer CC

  46. D.... B....

@ratchetfp That's what I figured too but, there's also a Channing Way -googled it- near where Scott grew up in Ohio. Not sure if it even exsisted back then though.

  47. G.... L....

Like the soundtrack to a cult sixties film that was never made...

  48. j.... .....

My favourite song of all time...don't really want to know all the intricate details, correct lyrics etc...just enjoy the feeling....

  49. D.... ....

@guidofski @guidofski No need for thanks. You posted this wonderful song and your lyrics are correct. Such work deserves the thanks, particularly when many online sites quote the lyrics incorrectly. With Scott, there is really no debate as to his lyrics (in words as opposed to meaning) as, I have heard no-one (no exaggeration) who's singing diction is as perfect as his.

Tis a small piece of genius and I give you my thanks that this exists on youtube.

    Feel proud.

  50. g.... ....

@beaucastel66046 Thank YOU and you're very welcome! :)

  51. b.... ....

Thanks for posting this with subtitles and getting the lyrics right!

  52. g.... ....

@DrusillaDarko Thank you, I wouldn't have said it better myself. It seems that "enchanting way" appears in the song's lyrics if you search for it on the Internet, which is never a foolproof way to get any song's lyrics right, as everyone should know by now. ;) It also appears in the "Boy Child" booklet, which shows several incorrections in the lyrics of other songs as well.

  53. D.... ....

Surely it is 'Channing Way' as opposed to 'enchanting way' - otherwise, not only is Scott's impeccable singing diction severely flawed (repeatedly) but he is also grammatically incorrect several times. I'd be interested as to why anyone insists it is 'enchanting way' but I'm fairly certain it's 'Channing Way' and the video poster is correct. Still, either way, it is magnificent as always to hear.

    D.... ....

we think it is Channing Way. But Colleen of the Candles?...

  54. K.... B....

It's a pity Scott Walker doesn't sort out himself the words, channing or enchanting way, he wrote it, doesn't anyone out there know the man to ask, i wish i did, cos he's the KING for me. This is a reminder of the genius of his work, if only he would do more of this.

  55. C.... ....

It's not Channing way, sorry, it's "enchanting way".

    C.... ....

    No, it's not.

    C.... ....

It's Channing - you can hear the "ing" when he sings it. Clear as crystal.

    C.... ....

Definitely saw Channing Way on the TelePrompTer at last years Prom, he’d fooled me for 40 years!

    C.... ....

You can hear the 'T'. Clear as anything.@BabeRainbow59

  56. C.... ....

I really love this song!! love love love! Very poetic, too much, on my mind, to be clearly explained.

  57. m.... ....

    Fabulous....no other words for it

  58. J.... L....

oh so wonderful.....can still sing along with this despite not having heard it in 20 years or so..

  59. g.... ....

You're most welcome. I agree, it's quite an unusual song, yet it has the power to entrance and seduce one for life!

Thanks so much for your words. :)

  60. D.... ....

My thanks for this wonderful song. I rarely hear it being cited as a masterpiece but to my humble ears, it is indeed. Truly wonderful & thought-provoking - many thanks again. x

  61. g.... ....

    Not at the moment, sorry.

  62. v.... ....

"I think I'll melt with you!!" yesss from me too!
    Isn't he glorious!

  63. g.... ....

Now how did I know you'd like this one?... ;)
