Sayer, Leo - One Man Band Lyrics

Everybody knows down Ladbroke Grove
You have to leap across the street
You can lose your life under a taxi cab
You gotta have eyes in your feet
You find a nice soft corner and you sit right down
Take up your guitar and play
Then the lawman comes and says move along
So you move along all day
I'm a one man band
Nobody cares nor understands
Is there anybody out there wanna lend a hand
To my one man band
For three days now I haven't eaten at all
My, my, I must be getting so thin
Soon my cap won't be large enough
To drop a half-a-crown in
So hey there mister don't you look so sad
Don't look so ill at ease
When I can play you any song you like
To cheer up the life you lead
I'm a one man band
Nobody cares nor understands
Is there anybody out there wanna lend a hand
To my one man band
And oh, oh, oh, look at the rain falling
Oh, oh, oh look at it rain
Oh look at it rain
Nobody sees the minstrel boy
As he sings his tale of woe
Nobody sees him coming, nobody sees him go
So hey there mister don't you look so sad
Don't look so ill at ease
When I can play you any song you like
To cheer up the life you lead
I'm a one man band
Nobody cares nor understands
Is there anybody out there wanna lend a hand
To my one man band

Thank you. I've always wondered where and when this was taped. It was shown in the States on a late-night music series called "In Concert," aired in August of '74. No explanation or background given, just this amazing concert out of nowhere. I've loved this era of him ever since, but sadly it was an early peak that he would never match again.

  17. l.... ....

    masterly

  18. J.... M....

Seen him in Dublin brought the house down brilliant jim Irene? Thee best.

  28. J.... S....

Difficult to say who did it better. Daltrey's voice was stronger but the passion here is undeniable

  29. D.... M....

If only we had artists like this now

  30. J.... G....

I find myself spending my last night in my home of so many many years. Now divorcing I have to leave and this song normally one I listen to tapping my foot I now find I listen to as the tears roll down my face.. wonder if I'll listen to it again..

Only underestimated by the narrow minded. Pure quality

  33. J.... Y....

I’ve watched some great bands, The Alarm, The Manics, Muse , Tom McRae, Future Islands, Levellers, loads but that gig which I was dragged to on behalf of my friends was the best night ever, what a songsmith, brill beyond clean pants

  39. R.... L....

    Old friend.

  40. M.... N....

He looks like Justin beiber in clown make up. Far more talent by far thow

  41. A.... C....

Holy Jeez, a song / performance 4 decades old, but absolutely timeless!!!!

  42. K.... K....

All my life Ive loved this mans voice and we were so lucky to have seen his show recently in Torquay then met him after the show for selfies and a chat! AWESOME a great loss to the UK as he now lives in Australia (mind you a wise move as poor old UK is on its knees so I think we will have to leave the land we were born in 60 years ago) :((

Thanks Leo great to meet you!

    K.... K....

  53. L.... H....

Here I am again. I’ll never get tired of him. I listen to these videos often and I’m equally entertained every time.

  54. N.... ....

Leo Sayer siempre me pareció excelentísimo artista, pero muy infravalorado. Como si un productor hubiera decidido tomar su carrera por el lado comercial y fue muy famoso en los 70s, pero este artista daba para mucho más.

  55. G.... ....

welcome all you NAY-SAYER'S this is ART

  56. C.... B....

I hate when I say ‘Leo sayer’ and people respond ‘who?’ So underrated

  57. L.... H....

A truly beautiful singer and story teller. Don't make them like this anymore!!

  58. l.... r....

"Drop half a crown in". Baffling for the younger generation. 12 and a half pence in modern money, doesn't buy much. In 1974 it was quite something if you were a child and were given half a crown pocket money. There were 8 in a pound (note), if you got £1 a week, you were loaded.

  59. K.... W....

    Best song ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  60. M.... A....

Anyone know where this is? What venue? Cheers

    M.... A....

Marc Ambrose BBC Studios London England February 5 1974. The show aired running 30 minutes. DVD now available; Leo Sayer live in Concert BBC 2-5-74. DVD is region-free.

NICE NICE NICE NICE BEAUTFIL MY MAN WISH IIII COULD RIGHT LIKE THAT CHRIS

  64. b.... m....

A true Soul MAN 😎 great voice

  65. A.... H....

who remembers Daultrys album Leo wrote this one for the album when he was a kid.

  66. N.... ....

What a clown! Great song! But a shame drug taking has dulled his sense of wardrobe.

  67. m.... ....

About time some people in the media stop latching on to "punk" whenever talking about the late 1970s..... There was alot more to it than that. As the level of talent on display here surely proves.

  68. Z.... ....

Underrated. He got screwed over by his record company, so I've heard.

  69. l.... ....

I really need to see him perform before he passes away.

    l.... ....

hmm only in the United Kingdom. Well. I guess not. Perhaps I can pay him to play on my next birthday.

    l.... ....

    He's still AROUND!!...lives In Australia !

  70. m.... ....

  82. W.... F....

As a young bloke, what was with the clown outfit?

    W.... F....

He was shy in his early days.. so he wears this disguise.

  83. d.... k....

I saw this guy at the Trenton War Memorial. He was the opener for ELO. Good Show...Great voice. Years ahead of his time. Clown suits rule.

    d.... k....

  90. J.... D....

I agree with you, I loved he's music, he seemed to just fade away from the public eye, my late brother knew him, which made a difference as you got what the song's ment to him

  91. C.... P....

  92. g.... g....

    B.... G....

Ben Gale Leo only used the clown suit in concerts during the first year or year and a half of his career....as his self confidence grew, off came the clown suit.

  94. J.... ....

I always thought Leo only did this. He's amazing
