Sawyer Brown - Another Side Lyrics

We came up from Sheffield
And they put us on the line
You could smell the powder burnin'
And man, it hurt my eyes
They knew them boys were tired and weak-
We were fresh and we were strong
We could not wait to blast away
And make our presence known
But every time I took my aim
And got one in my sight
In my heart I knew the way
And this way was not right

Oh, I guess my daddy would be proud
But my momma, she's ashamed
And I know deep down we need a change
Them Northern boys are friends of mine
But I've got my Southern pride
I'm standin' here a-fightin'
Wishin' there
Was another side

We burned each other's crops and fields
And took the very best
We fought our way back and forth
Then they put us to the test
I know that some things are wrong
But what gave them the right
To point their righteous fingers
And expect us not to fight?
We all cried on the night they burned Atlanta down
How much more can we take and still stand our ground?

Oh, I guess my daddy would be proud
But my momma, she's ashamed
And I know deep down we need a change
Them colored boys are friends of mine
But I've got my Southern pride
I'm standin' here a-fightin'
Wishin' there
Was another side

In four years the smoke had cleared
And I went back to the farm
Little brother met me at the bridge
And he held out his arms
He was thin and weak and wounded
And dressed in Yankee blue
Well, I cried and I held him
And together we both knew
If it could be done over
There would be a better way
Still one family, and one nation
Oh, but what a price we paid

I guess my daddy would be proud
But my momma, she's ashamed
And I know deep down we need a change
Now, some of them boys were friends of mine
But dang this Southern pride
I'm standin' here a-cryin'
Wishin' there
Was another side

I'm wishin' there was another side
Wishin' there was another side

Such a powerful story. I think this is a message most soldiers in the civil war would have agreed with. I certainly agreed with it now. It is almost as if America is in another civil war now and I wish we could put our pride aside, take a breath, and agree to figure out what will really make this country great again

  7. u.... m....

I wish there was another side to the binary, divisive rhetoric about the statue- Silent Sam at UNC-CH, and the hate from both sides.

  8. s.... ....

Dang this Southern pride... that's all you need to know. The American Civil was a part two of the English Civil War, the English (Yankees) and the Irish, Scots (the South) just look at the names.

My son played the main soldier in this. I was so sad when CMT felt like they couldn't run it . It has a message that really reverberates in our country now when it seems like we are in a modern day civil war. We are all wishing for " Another side "

I always thought it was "I cried and I hailed him in and together we both knew", and actually the video makes that reference more. They met back at the farm, on Southern land, with the little brother being the Yankee. He Hailed him to say I respected your service and we are family.

  26. T.... ....

Some of the words got changed, it should be "some of those colored boys were friends of mine but danged this southern pride"   Still remember this when it first came out.

    T.... ....

It still has that line.  The first chorus says, "Northern."  The second says, "colored" ( 2:48 point).

This song was banned from the radio stations after it became a hit. I think it was a very good song.
