Ok….. so it's a calm song about someone who kills….. but at the ends says "I'll kill this killing man." Does he quit? Suicide? Is the whole thing a metaphor? It seems he's either grown weary of killing OR never wanted to kill in the first place. Need to relisten to the part about the people who "Run the show" and maybe that will help me out…… but am I close? Anyone look up the actual song meaning from a reliable source?

There are those in “ The Game “ ... (that’s what it’s called . )

They usually are involved with the intelligence community , or organized crime ... sometimes those are one and the same , they overlap , in bed with each other ... who’s business is to eliminate targets ... tangoes ...
For whom ... you usually don’t need to know ... and the intel you get are lies , and you know they are lies .

It’s not all they do , but it is a part .
It’s a dark life in the shadows .
Lonely ... trusting no one ... not fully .
The other side may be on to you , your cover blown ... or your own people may decide to burn you , if you become inconvenient .
Leave you out in the cold , or eliminate you themselves if you might be a problem.
The Mossad , and various US alphabet agencies ...

They can be Seal Team Six , Delta types ... most are ... or some guy that looks like everyone else .
They usually come to the life through the military... and are recognized for being good at what they do .
They are run through the mill ... COIN operations , counter intelligence... codes and communications... secret squirrel shit .
Tradecraft and OPSEC , field ops .

Then they are working on a target ... someone designated as a HVT ...
The skills come into play ...surveillance ( stalking ) ... estimation and planning ... work up a plan ... close range hit , bullet , knife ... whatever ... command detonated bomb in their room or car ... or long range with a rifle maybe .
Living in motel rooms and safe houses ... separate from the rest of the world .

As long as plausible deniability can be maintained ... that’s why you use sterile equipment and carry fake ID .
In case it all goes wrong .
They will find out who you are eventually, but can’t prove anything...
if you are caught .

If it goes right , your invisible ... nobody knows nothing ... like the guy that got Georgie Markov .

The best ops look like accidents or natural causes ... the worst ones look like the inside of a butcher shop or a horror movie ... unless it’s planned that way ... to send a message to someone .

Amazing what people will do for God , King and Country .

That’s why the line about killing the killing man is significant ... the guilt becomes more and more of a weight on your soul ... if you can’t stay completely numb .
You can justify some of it , the rest eats at you ... comes back to haunt you in flashbacks during your downtime... sights , sounds , smells ... all of it .
Clandestine and asymmetrical warfare ...
Politics is just warfare by other means ... and when diplomacy fails ... covert action takes the place of open warfare ... if the principles are smart .
A knife in a crowd , a suppressed pistol in a parking lot ... a bomb on your private boat ( a la Mountbatten) takes the place of divisions in the field .
