Savatage - Streets Lyrics

As darkness falls so hard
The children play

Somewhere
Out there
Alone and out of place
Streets of illusion
Sooth the shattered fate

I've been a runner
I've been a sinner
I've been inside my head
I sit here staring
Never quite caring
And this is where it has led

[Chorus]

These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake

Somewhere out there
Gardens bloom and grow
Children awaken
To a world they know

Somewhere the sun shines
Somewhere the light's kind
Somewhere they seek the day

Somewhere there's no scene
Somewhere the air's clean
But somewhere is so far away

These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake

Welcome children
From the other side
In the darkness
Your eyes are opened wide

Here there are answers
On the edge dancers
Here the night hides out sins
And if you listen
While the streets glisten
Here's where our story begins

These streets
Glitter in the dark
Don't sleep
Red eyes sunken and stark
Dream deep
In her arms where you are safe
These streets
Never sleep still never wake

This song perfectly represents the Opioid/heroine crisis in the U.S. "Red Eyes, Sunken and Stark" "These Streets Never sleep, still they never wake" Such an amazing song.

Many folks seem to find this their best work, but though it's certainly good, for me it's not their best. I like Gutter Ballet best (and also Ghost in the Ruins, but that's a live piece). That album still has the mystical symphonic vibe of their earlier work, but it already makes the shift to progressive rock. As often with albums that mark a shift between two styles of a band, it's their most captivating work. Other examples are Metallica's Black Album and U2's Achtung Baby. Not that the albums before the Black Album or Achtung Baby are not excellent to fantastic, still, somehow these albums are the most interesting and mature albums of the bands concerned. It represents the absolute pinnacle of their artistic power. Same goes for Gutter Ballet by Savatage, even if, again, Streets is certainly also an excellent album.

Thanks for sharing this album. I still have this album but it's in a box all mixted cd's. But I have to admit that this Savatage album is the greatest in my book. Too bad they didn't shine like they should. Blame the grunch. ...

  39. p.... c....

it should be no surprise that they are the brains behind the Trans Siberian Orchestra

  40. K.... H....

This song is so awesome, it should be in the Louvre!

    K.... H....

@Keith Holm It's too awesome for the Louvre, like all Savatage songs!

  41. P.... C....

For me personally, this is what a rock opera should sound like. It has all the right players in it. A kick ass band with tremendous talent. Jon Oliva and Chris Oliva were great together in the band. Sad to say Chris was taken from us all, because of the selfish act of a drunk driver. RIP Chris Oliva, you were one of my favorite 80s guitarists. May your music live on forever~~~~

    P.... C....

    Totally agree with you..

    P.... C....

listening to sabotage with my bro Zach he introduced me to this band and I'm telling Chris Olivia was a great guitarist thank you for your comment I'm an 80s lover myself all the way love you rock on forever

    P.... C....

This is one of their finest moments.

  42. L.... R....

I have a feeling this is something my first guitar teacher would have listened to. Very unique in direction.

  43. S.... ....

Great band. Extremely talented and underappreciated. Great memories from my teens.

    S.... ....

@SuperHANS1976 I'm in my teens now and discovered this band 1,5 years ago. I can only say it's simply the best, even better than other great bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensrÿche, Metallica, whatever...

    S.... ....

+Still the Orchestra plays every band you mention, and many more, have something different to show....my advise is never close doors...!!!enjoy the journey kid!!!rock on!!!!

    S.... ....

Thijs \m/ Hey brother, this shit ain't for everyone. It calls to a select few of us. Discovered this band in '89 or so . I'm 41 now. Mad cool to see Millenium kids diggin' the same shit I did at that age. Live well my friend.

    S.... ....

@Thijs \m/ Savatage is EASILY far, far better than Metallica. Hetfield's vocals aren't bad or anthing but they can't beat Jon Oliva's 4-octave voice and crazy delivery. Criss Oliva is an amazing guitar player that's at least as good as Hetfield, if not better. And Jeff Plate is a skilled and creative drummer unlike fucking Lars Ulrich. Everytime I hear that clown play the drums I cringe...

  44. f.... ....

One of my favorite albums...from Mozart's Magic Flute to metal mania in 25 seconds. Is that an ambitious music direction or what? For me it's pure joy. Thanks for the upload GC...

  45. J.... W....

    Awesome voice and terrific songwriting.

    J.... W....

Zak has that deeper, smoother, more resonant voice that we all love, so yeah...I could always sing Zak's Savatage stuff better than I could Jon Oliva's (same vocal range as Zak) tho both are phenomenal. As for Zak's CIIC stuff, it's good but I'm not as much a fan as I am of his work with 'Tage. TSO is like a watered-down version of 'Tage, too...their covers of 'Tage songs leave me flat

    J.... W....

@Mark Napier Its so true but I never was lucky enough to see the Tage back in the day. I loved Chris Oliva he is one of my all time favorite guitarists. I have a long list Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Hanks Sherman and Michael Denner of Mercyful Fate. I am a singer and I love Kings voice and the great stories. Andy LaRoque, Randy Rhoads, Zak Wylde and many more. I love music I should have never given it up. Doom metal is another thing that I love. Solitude Aeturnus has an excellent singer  Robert Lowe and Candlemass is another doom metal band with Messiah Marcolin. Really great singers. I love the long drawn out feel of doom and the melancholic feel it fits my mood mostly. Stay heavy and doom on~~

    J.... W....

I love the sound of epic doom, and am a huge fan of the movie Bram Stoker's DRACULA so a lot of my own songs are about Vlad, or as tho I WERE Vlad, myself. Gothic romance, horror, and doom are my faves...

I'm trying to develop my own brand/subgenre that infuses elements of dark ambient, gothic doom, some post-grunge & post-hardcore. I'm also training my voice atm for matinee opera performances as a baritone & dramatic tenor

    J.... W....

Feel free to add me - Mark Napier - on FB if ya like...look for Clearwater Florida under the name & a blood-red guitar as the profile pic \m/

    J.... W....

@Mark Napier I will thanks take care  am on there also I don't facebook a lot but when I do I put the songs I write on my page. My name and Mercyful Fate stuff, and the music I love the most. Take care Metal rules forever. \m/
