Sarah McLachlan - Wait Lyrics

Under a blackened sky
far beyond the glaring streetlights
sleeping on empty dreams
the vultures lie in wait
You lay down beside me then
you were with me every waking hour
so close I could feel your breath
When all we wanted was the dream
to have and to hold that precious little thing
like every generation yields
the new born hope unjaded by their years
Pressed up against the glass
I found myself wanting sympathy
but to be consumed again
oh I know would be the death of me
and there is a love that's inherently given
a kind of blindness offered to appease
and in that light of forbidden joy
oh I know I won't receive it
When all we wanted was the dream
to have and to hold that precious little thing
like every generation yields
the newborn hope unjaded by their years
You know if I leave you now
it doesn't mean that I love you any less
it's just the state I'm in
I can't be good to anyone else like this
When all we wanted was the dream
to have and to hold that precious little thing
like every generation yields
the new born hope unjaded by their years...

Now that i look back on it her stuff was really dark and haunting. You just dont see commercial artist putting this out these days, I feel. But it was the 90' s and Cobain an Vedder ruled that time. I feel that she provided a female voice that fit into the grunge period nicely.

    A.... J....

the 90's were a phenomenal time musically across multiple genres...a lot of uniqueness imo.

Sarah McLachlan's music is better than love; it makes me feel something no human relationship has ever conjured inside me. Music is the best thing humans have ever devised.

sara s writings are kindred 2 Dylan Thomas I love his poetry although his later poems are depressive she manages as a songwriter to move through darkness with embeddedness and love
her music is very simple with great intervals of creative fusion and warm chord s and a jazz feel
a wonderful writer very moving ,,,,,,,

  30. a.... ....

    Perfection recorded.

+asr070568 Indeed! One of my top 10 from the 90's

  31. M.... B....

Eve is negotiating with Satan in the Garden, because Adam was with God...after she met the Serpent she knew she had to tell Adam, but he knew because God condemned them, shamed them and cursed them because they chose to be as God instead of obeying the simple command "stay away from the tree of knowkedge, the knowkedge of good and evil"...they didn't know what evil was other than God was evil because He told them "No"..."Original Sin"

    M.... B....

Then afyer the knowledge of "evil"...the curses of human existence were within them as mortals....and all humans suffer it forever...but in the terms and definitions the bible defines.

  32. M.... ....

Two songs into this shit and I'm thinking of finding something to fall in love with... Damn this witch's magic and damn that it's still as effective as it was in the 90s..

    M.... ....

Sarah has been gifted with the voice of an Angel. Her lyrics and Melodies reach me with a depth of under standing and a sense of belonging I have very rarely experienced. Years ago the early nineties in fact, a much younger Woman who against all odds became one of the most loved Beings I have had the sweet glorious surprise of knowing tried for over three years to persuade me actually to plead with me to listen to some of Sarah's Musical Magic. Tracie went to Great Lengths in her efforts of trying to share with me the blessings and deep soul healing and She felt would be set into motion

    M.... ....

fall in love with science or nature or the stars...trust me lol.

I think it's a discouraging against love, like all the sadness and heartache and loss attributable to love. How can it be inspiring to you to find someone to love?

  33. L.... N....

I love all of Sarah Songs. She is a real charm. Her voice serenades.

    One of the best

  35. Q.... K....

I don't know why you would feel peaceful or happy with this song. it's about major relationship coming to an end due to an inability to be able to have children. the person this song is describing is severely depressed. in fact, the last verse sounds like she is thinking about killing herself "I can't be good to anyone else like this". and it is because she cannot, for whatever medical reason (to be consumed again, oh, I know would be the death of me) possibly following a failed pregnancy following which she would likely die if she got pregnant again. ("Pressed up against the glass, I found myself wanting sympathy" the glass is that in the maternity ward, staring at the other babies and wanting sympathy for the one she just lost)

this is a powerfully emotional song is all I can really say though

    Q.... K....

The beautiful thing about music is that the emotion it drives is personal and unique.  That said, one feeling peaceful and/or happy is purely subjective, lyrics aside.  I appreciate lyrics but for me personally, it's all about the music, instrumentation, tone and inflection in voice, and key tonality, minor being my favorite.  This song sounds like minor key to me and while it has a corresponding depressing feel, it makes me happy to hear it.
I do agree with you that it is powerfully emotional but for me personally, it's because of the feel of the sound and not the lyrics. =)

  36. E.... M....

Excellent! Thank you. Just the ticket today.

I love Sarah mclachlan her passion and her experience with the dept of her convictions makes her great

  38. B.... D....

Intense, intensely personal album, matched with a textured, moody production. "Wait" always takes it over the top. Always. The album stayed on my CD player and seemingly played constantly for more than 8 months.

+KateMarasbitch She wasn't underrated in her time (90's) she was one of the most aclaimed female artists back then.

  42. K.... ....

This song is underrated as Sarah is also heavily underrated. I love this song just as much as building a mystery.

She will FOREVER be my favorite...her music goes right into me and touches me on a level unknown!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL YRS OF MUSIC!!! ♥♥♥

  59. r.... ....

This album was very important to me. I'm a guy but I was 18 -19 when this was released. I was listening to all sorts of stuff at the time from Tool to the Grateful Dead, Tori Amos and Uncle Tupelo. This album pulled at that part of my core that was passionate, pained and romantic as you can only be in those formative years of your life. She's had some OK stuff since but this one will always be special.

redbeakman Exactly the same here. Identical, I mean.
