I'm doing a round of YouTube versions of this song in my two mother tongues, English and Spanish. This is the best along with a performance by Nicole Sherzinger, Madonna, Mia Patterson and Nacha Guevara are also quite moving. The ones who fail to make my skin react are Tina Arena and Paloma San Basilio.

Julie Covington and Joan Baez versions are the best in my opinion.Check them out.

@alberto 9 I listened to Julie Covington after posting my comment--top of the list. I'll try out Joan Báez. Thanks for the recommendation. Karen Carpenter is really good too. Her voice is unique, although her version lacks a bit of passion, in my opinion.

Andrew Loyd Webber wrote Evita for his then wife, Sara Brighton so this is the original version, plus her voice has no comparison with anyone else. She is a soprano!!!

Nonsense. Lloyd Webber wrote this musical in 1976, and he didn't meet Sarah Brightman (who was 16 in 1976) until 1981. Julie Covington was the first Evita to sing Don't cry for me Argentina. If Lloyd Webber wrote anything specifically for Sarah Brightman, it must have been Phantom of the opera, which opened in 1986, two years after Lloyd Webber and Brightman got married.

Right, it was Phantom. He also composed the soprano parts of Requiem with her vocal range in mind. Lloyd Webber met her when she auditioned for Cats in 1980.
