She wrote the lyrics herself. Morricone was pleased with the result, and in sequence he let her “baptize” with lyrics 3 more instrumental pieces, a very unusual step for Morricone.

When I first saw the movie, The Mission, I thought wow, this is REALLY, REALLY beautiful music. The way it lilted through the whole score was the best thing about the entire movie. Then I heard the young British tenor Russell Watson perform it as the lead song on his early CD, The Voice, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in simply spectacular sound. Fabulous! But Sarah Brightman's interpretation is also just fantastic. I guess which you like better depends on whether you prefer a tenor or a soprano singing it. I'm not a big fan of Ms. Brightman's later work--it strikes me as a bit too cabaret-ish. But this performance is really wonderful, probably reflecting her deep interest in convincing the composer to have lyrics put to it in the first place.

I've heard many different singers singing this song on YouTube but most all of them were missing the rhythm in which they were either too slow or fast on certain notes. But Sarah? Oh my goodness Sarah was absolutely perfect! And so beautiful!

I love how people COME on these pages sometimes and SAY that SHE CANNOT SING...LOL..hahahha...She is brilliant, well anyway, they say that about celine too and barbara and so many greats. Ella these people who slate Sarah just dont get it, we love Sarah not just for her voice she has something we cant explain , we all know there are better technical singers but Sarah gives much much more she is enchanting , mesmerising , beautiful in mind and body she captivates you and takes you to a better place when your down

Though I love Sarah, I think the reason people dislike her is— not because she “can”t sing”— but because she has a very unique nasal sound to her voice. Either you love it or hate it. (This has just been my experience from browsing comment sections)

She was a great singer, but it seems to me that she is showing her age. There are inconsistencies in her voice (1) when she is shifting from low to high or high to low pitch and (2) her vibrato wobbles, instead of pulsating. Basically, she is compensating using her techniques. You should compare her voice in this song to her in Phantom or in Pie Jesu. It's not the same.
