Sara Bareilles - Eden Lyrics
Let me paint a picture for you then I'll have to teach you to see it
Illustrate the remnants of the life I used to live here in Eden
Rolled a lucky pair of dice, ended up paradise
Landed on a snake's eyes, took a bite and ended up bleeding
The truth is all those angels started acting the same
And I know there's no going back now cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
No way to make the pain play fair
It doesn't disappear just because you say it isn't there
So when they ask why'd she go you can say cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
Life in Eden changed
Walking in the garden was a serpent-shaped heart and he told me
That what is broken cannot show, and less than beautiful is worse than unholy
Idolized my innocence, stole it from me in the end
Now I'm wide awakened and still paying for the poison they sold me
You know if I could change anything, I think I would start with the name
The truth is all those angels started acting the same
And I know there's no going back now cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
No way to make the pain play fair
It doesn't disappear just because you say it isn't there
So when they ask why'd she go you can say cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
Life in Eden changed
There was a time when I was taking all bets
That this place was even better than as good as it gets
And now looking back from the outside in
I think I was choking on the air in Eden
You know if I could change anything, I think I would start with the name
The truth is all those angels started acting the same
And I know there's no going back now cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
No way to make the pain play fair
It doesn't disappear just because you say it isn't there
So when they ask why'd she go you can say cause
Life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
When they ask why'd she go you
Cause life in Eden
Life in Eden changed
Life in Eden changed
Life in Eden changed

Sara Bareilles Eden Comments
Satanic Hollywood. The devil is a Liar!
Her voice.. her heart.. she's just beautiful .. such talent!
If you run out of reasons why they should let you into heaven Sarah, there's always this!
I think I'm choking in the air in Eden-my favorate line and part
No way to make the pain play fair
It doesn't disappear just because you say it isn't there
😭
I've always heard Prince & the revolution in this song.
Really good work with this melody, the beat, and your song, Sara...
love this song
Sounds like with all these snake and poison and losing innocence references she was young, got popular by blowing a bunch of dudes , now she's trying to give that guilt some noble meaning by transferring it to the characteristic of the town rather then owning it, so she can "leave it behind" by moving away rather then admitting the problem is within.
I think the reference in the song is the story of Adam and Eve in the Bible and how Satan acted as a snake to get them to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, and when they did they were "poisened" and no longer had the chance of living forever. The angels reference is talking about the angels gaurding the garden of Eden.
What genre would you say this song is?
ay who's also getting a HAIM vibe from this?
13 dislikes from Westboro Baptist Church people who are butthurt that she could possibly say anything bad about Eden lol
This is a really brilliant song.
Yo guys she wrote a song with my name in it ❤️❤️❤️❤️ yayayaya
love this!!!!!
This makes me happy!
Little mix black magic I'd sue them
I so love this SONG so much Meaning to it!! It's how you interpret the song that gives it so much Beauty!! Sara B is amazing...love her with all my soul...
Dedicate this to my university.
Nice. Parts of it remind me of Prince.
Definitely !!!! Same Here!!! Lol that's what attracted me to the song in the first place!!! :)
I usually listen to rap but this is actually good
Another good song for her is morningside
gambling references remind me how much she sounds like tsunade from naruto
I love this album, most songs have that feel good factor about them. She reminds me of the band Haim, which I also love. I know Sara was singing first, but they just have that same vocal tone :)
Fave song!
I love her she is absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!
EDEN equals HOLLYWOOD she is describing hollywood people!! It's a good message.. and she's only calling it eden because they call it the "City of Angels" get it?
I get it now, I was wondering what EDEN met.
I always thought she was talking about a relationship that looks really good to other people, but was actually terrible, unenjoyable, or even abusive. Like people think a two people are totally in love but their relationship is totally unhealthy and then people are like "oh geez why'd you break up it looked so perfect" and shes like well it was good at first but now they're a douchebag so i left. But your explanation makes a lot of sense too so. ^u^
@Jazmine Mitts Eden is a metaphor to seeing something as beautiful and finding out the truth later on, when you realize it isn't the flowering garden, but a drab and dismal place.
So you aren't wrong either, it's a general term for anything that fits into that really.
Light Bulb
@Nicolette Brianna I can't be positive but I think you are taking the song too literally. Personally it seems that the song is not for the view point of adam and eve but a present day girl who belived her home town was perfect (like eden) and now that she left sees how bad it was. I really don't think this song has anything to do with the story of adam and eve.
I was only asking, and sharing what my first thought of this song was. Thank you (honest) for sharing on how you took the song. I'll listen to it again while hearing your side of it too. Take care :) xoxo
The songs is about being in Hollywood :) pressure and staff like that is madness
I thought this song was about loss of innocence. Pressure from others to change who you are.
"Idolized my innocence,
Stole it from me in the end.
Now I’m wide awakened and still paying for the poison they sold me."
The lyrics and arrangement remind me of Prince.
"Seems I was choking on the air in Eden"
Yea, I heard that too, what exactly does that mean?
They weren't choking on air, and that's not the reason they left Eden.
You know? XP
@Nicolette Brianna
They felt smothered by the familiar and realized that they had a lot to learn once they left. Big dreams, small town. My best guess.
Who likes to sing the line "all those angels started acting the same" as "all those angels started acting insane?" It's so fitting! ;)
I thought that was the line at first! Only realized having looked at the lyric booklet
I was singing it "All those angels started acting strange"
me! I just figured out tonight that it's NOT insane, lol. I like it better that way actually.
Headphones on, screaming this while attempting to sound as graceful as she does, while working. Idk how many people have walked in at me at work jamming out to this cd! <3
Lmboooo its so AMAZING!! Isn't it!!
Surprised at how few comments there are on this song. It's my favorite from the album. I'm always reminded of Peter Gabriel somehow by this song.
Great work.
I love this song's lyrics. Lots of beautifully phrased metaphors and Sara makes it seem effortless.
nice haunt... and just try to count out the timing on the chorus... very cool
LOVE LOVE LOVE the song. Well done Sara.
Didn't expect the song to go where it does from its verses! Love the chorus!
Another great new Sara song!
