Sammy Davis Jr. - Can't We Be Friends? Lyrics
I thought I'd found the man of my dreams
Now it seems this is how the story ends
He's gonna turn me down and say
Can't we be friends?
Not for long, I can see the way this ends
He's gonna turn me down and say
Can't we be friends?
Never again, through with love, through with men
They play the game without shame, and who's to blame?
I thought I'd found a man I could trust
What a bust, this is how the story ends
He's gonna turn me down and say
Why should I care?
Though he gave me the air
Why should I cry, heave a sigh and wonder why?
I should have seen the signal to stop
What a flop, this is how the story ends
I'll let him turn me down and say
Can't we be friends?

Sammy Davis Jr. Can't We Be Friends? Comments
I'm back again, after some eight month, to listen to this great rendition by none other than Sammy Davis, Jr., himself, whom I find myself missing more and more every day. Funny how you think people you like will live on forever!
What a smart, intelligent, intuitive reading of this most provocative lyric! Absolutely dynamite Sammy -and a wonderfully rhythmic -yet restrained- backing by orchestrator supreme Marty Paich. Superb pop rendition that transcends it's category.
@John Meyer You bet. Paich, like Gil Evans, was someone to have on board. Throw in Kiwi Alan Broadbent on piano, please.
Perhaps wonderfully restrained, yet rhythmic?
Anybody know who plays in the trumpet and saxophone solos? First time I heard this record was back in 1975. I liked and I like very much the orchestra.
I'm sure if Marty Poach is still alive. If he is you or someone might reach out to him and ask him to identify the trumpeter and sax names
