Sam Cooke - The House I Live In Lyrics

the house I live in
a plot of earth, a street
the grocer and the butcher
and the people that I meet
the children in the playground
the faces that I see
all races, all religions
that's a miracle to me

the place I work in
the worker at my side
the little town or city
where my people lived and died
the howdie and the handshake
the air of feeling free
the right to speak my mind out
that's a miracle to me

the things I see about me
the big things and the small
the little corner newsstand
and the howls a mile tall
the wedding in the churchyard
the laughter and the tears
the dream that's been a-growing for a 150 year

the town I live in
the street, the house, the room
the pavement of the city
are a garden all in bloom
the church the school the clubhouse
the million lights I see
but especially the people
that's a miracle to me

wow I did not know of this recording before hearing it on oitnb. Sam's songs are so rich in backgroung arrangement and so well recorded acoustically.if only he could know how much he is admired still today.

Turner Classic Movies brought me here when they played the Frank Sinatra short film with the song The House I Live In (what america is to me), watch that short film and read about the song and the covered versions, you can find many clips of it on here.

So glad OITNB used this song, look for the Frank Sinatra short film 'the House I live in' were the song made its debut , and then listen to Paul Robeson version with the full lyrics, and read the wikipedia page about the film and song.
this song and this land is your land , are like the best two positive american songs of the last century .

Orange is the New Black brought me here, when Taystee found “Pennsatucky” Doggett dead in the Laundry Room. 😢

Thanks OITNB for introducing me to this great song. This, THIS is what makes America great. People living together in harmony as one nation who respects all people and religions. Not one lead by someone who only wants to divide us.

  13. E.... B....

LOL, I would love to compare the views before and after OITNB :)

it's a new anthem because of a horrible stereotype of who usually goes to prison.......its a sad beautiful song.

    N.... K....

    I couldn’t contain my tears…

    N.... K....

@Caroline I am an emotional spirit person when I was telling my mom how I found this song, how orange was not your stereotype prison series I was over come .

    N.... K....

    That show is trash.

    N.... K....

@Klutchx Uk hey have you even watched more than #1 scene of more than one episode I was skeptical at first but it was very interesting because although these characters are not real you never really know what causes a person to go to prison .....

It would be a great country without the White man; to do Evil! the Whites; just plain Ugly and Evil toward peoples of color because they don't have any! Sam Cooke gives this song life; began to live it.

    R.... J....

Don't participate in this reverse racism. The song, lyrics and nothing has anything to do with race. There are plenty of us "white" people out here listening to this song and sobbing about how poignant it is.

  25. S.... L....

He had just bought his house in real life when he recorded this. The greatest! :)
