Sam Cooke - Tammy Lyrics

I hear the cottonwoods whispering above
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy's in love!
The old hootie owl hootie-hoo's to the dove
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy's in love!
Does my darling feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
you'd think that he could hear!
Wish I knew if he knew what I'm dreaming of!
Tammy! Tammy! Tammy's in love!

Whippoorwill, whippoorwill, you and I know
Tammy! Tammy! Can't let him go!
The breeze from the bayou keeps murmuring low
Tammy! Tammy! You love him so!
When the night is warm, soft and warm
I long for his charms!
I'd sing like a violin
if I were in his arms
Wish I knew if he knew what I'm dreaming of!
Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love!

  24. .... ....

WHAt,s a sweet he,s version. most great singer he is.

  25. t.... ....

Ahhh, the great Sam Cooke. He could sing any style but he brought Gospel/Spirituals to new heights, cranked -out Pop/Blues/Rock hybrids in his sleep and invented Soul Music. So what was he? THE BEST!

  26. M.... F....

A "decent version"  WT?!!!  This song is so vanilla and Sam nailed it with Soul and purity.  What separates Sam from the other great singers of any generation is that he could sing anything and everything! As the older folks would say, he could simply sing flat foot, without technology, simply a God given talent that has never, never been duplicated.

    M.... F....

Extraordinary talent.  I will not live long enough to see his equal.  I'm glad to have lived in his time and been
    exposed to his music.

  27. T.... ....

    R.I.P. Sam Cooke

  28. a.... p....

A soul that lives on across human barriers, Lovely

  29. p.... ....

Absolutely fabulous version of a great song.....takes me back to my childhood when we were a free country.

  30. S.... C....

HE COULD SING THE PHONE BOOK AND I WOULD BUY IT! What a talent! Glad I'm old enough to Remember! This WAS Music!

    S.... C....

Me too... with Sam, the song is irrelevant (although there are too many good ones to name!) - it was the VOICE! What a tragedy that this man was taken way before his time... It breaks your heart to think of the many songs unsung by this genius... he is and always will be the best singer of all time.

  31. T.... ....

@Larrycancooke2....that is one of the funniest things I've ever read!!! LOL...but its soooo true!! Sam can sing anything. I adore him.

  32. M.... D....

He could do anything to his voice! He was the greatest!

  33. p.... ....

Best rendition of Tammy I had ever heard....

    p.... ....

amen amen that man could sing

  34. D.... ....

Yep. The greatest singer to ever walk the face of the earth had power, tone, range, and IT...soul. This is a corny song...but Sam makes it BEAUTIFUL!!!

  35. n.... n....

A truly great singer. he was shot. Its sad and ironic that he had a big hit song years before his death about a jealous lover shooting her man to death.the song is titled.."Frankie and Johnnie".A very masterful singer.

  36. l.... m....

sam cooke there will never be another.

  37. R.... S....

If Sam did not die unfortunately, he would be as good as Johnny Matthiis

  38. R.... G....

Playing this song on my laptop through my surround sound while outside on my patio lounging, made me get off my ass an take notice!!! Wtf, this man is absolutely amazing what a prolific and touching artist he is/was. He's with us yet he is not. I admire him more & more with every note he sings. I am a senior citizen 73.
    I remember Sam Cooke.
I also remember the movie "Tammy" I was young when the movie came out. I don't know if Tammy was the name of the movie or just the song in the movie. I remember the song as very beautiful. Sam Cooke was very unique. I loved his singing very much.

    Perry J Gibson Sr.

  55. m.... ....

It's more than just a decent version!! Thanks for posting!

  56. m.... ....

Sam was one the greatest male singers in history! Thanks for posting this rare song!

  57. S.... E....

  59. A.... H....

    what a great version

  60. L.... ....

    @chrixchua

It's a real scandal how he died...unfortunate for someone soooo incredibly talented. In case you don't know, there is more to the story of why he was at the hotel. Read it if you're interested. I'm a big fan of Sam Cooke. His voice was so easily incredible. He didn't overpower everything - you don't hear voices like his nowadays.

  61. C.... C....

Cooke died at the age of thirty-three on December 11, 1964, at the Hacienda Motel at 9137 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, California. Bertha Franklin, manager of the motel, told police that she shot and killed Cooke in self-defense because he had threatened her.

  62. x.... ....

@chrixchua he was killed in 1964

  63. x.... ....

    he was killed in 1964

  64. C.... C....

  65. T.... M....

My name IS Tammy and I only remembered when the movies came out with Debbie Reynolds singing it, What a shock to see and hear this version I can't thank you enough for posting. My sister and I would sing this in bed when we were little! Thanks a million. No one can touch his voice in my opinion Tammy

  66. T.... t....

What a wonderful cover of a beautiful songI love this. Thanks for posting.

  67. a.... ....

I was a teenager back in Guyana (Jim Jones 1978 ?) now I'm married with 6 kids & Sam Cooke was then, and still is, a singer of the greatest warmth, soul & beauty; there's simply no one else like him. I get a special kind of nostalgia listening to him. That voice - priceless

  68. S.... E....

Without question one of the finest vocalists of my lifetime (I'm 59). Most likely that's Sam playing guitar on this. People that knew him said he was at his best just sitting with his guitar and singing a song. I had this on a cassette tape from Europe but lost it. Thanks so much for posting it. Calling this decent is like saying the Empire State Building is a little tall. It's manificent. If anyone thinks they could deliver this song better please step forward; I'd love to hear it.

  69. N.... J....

what a sweet and beautiful voice, like sweet and warm honey on hot biscuits

  70. D.... M....

    This song makes me cry...(sighs)

  71. s.... ....

Thank you so much for posting this!

  72. c.... ....

To say this is a decent version of the song is a huge understatement. This version is both touching and incredible. Only Sam could re-make it like this. To me, without a doubt he is the very best male vocalist ever. No one could deliver a song like Sam. The PBS documentary on Monday, 1/11/2010 was excellent. It gave an in-depth look into the man and his approach to music. Sam was one of those rare musical gifts to the world.

  73. p.... ....

anyone know the main chords/tabs to this tune?

  74. D.... H....
