Sam Cooke - Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out Lyrics
Once I lived the life of a millionaire
Spending my money honey, I didn't care
Taking my friends out for a mighty good time
I drank that good gin, champagne and wine
I couldn't find no friends
And I had no place to go
If I ever get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hold on to it till that eagle grins
'Cause I found out that nobody wants you
Nobody wants you when they find out
That you're down and out
In your pocket, there's not not one penny
And as for friends, you don't have any
Just let you get back up on your feet again
Here they all come telling you
Their your old long-lost friend
And this I wanna tell you and about it I have no doubt
Nobody wants you
Nobody needs you
Nobody wants when you're down and out

I HEAR YOU SAM.... DOWN IN YOUR BODY PUSHING THROUGH THE PAIN , BUT I MUST SAY THE SOUNDS OF YOUR GBABIES IS LIKE GENTLE RAIN.
IT NO LONGER MATTERS THAT ANYONE WANTS YOU, WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE.
LOVE IS JUST A TOUCH AWAY ... FINDING MOMENTS TO RELAX AND SMILE MORE AND YES EVEN LAUGH.
( THEY MAY NOT KNOW YOU WHEN YOUR DOWN AND OUT, BUT YOU KNOW THERE YOU WILL NOT STAY... SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO , REGARDLESS OF WHAT COMES ALONG THE WAY)
😙
By far,my most favorite Sam Cooke song
When you have been to rock bottom and survived, nothing can defeat you!!!!!!!
Sweet Jesus this man just is so smooth and fine. I could listen to him sing 24/7.
So true... that's me right now!
Only a real man can sing the blues
Would have loved to hear Amy Winehouse cover this too 😢
I'm only 34 and this is my favorite version. Very powerful message to this song.
Wanna find out who your real friends are? Sink the ship. The first ones to jump are not your friends. 💯
Aleita Watson I really like that comment & its ever so true I am 64 years old & In my life I have had a ship jumpers or two but as l look back over my life I can say now I am glad that they did jump ship when they did ( but in a joking way I am glad that they did jump ship when they did cause I was on the verge of choking them & throwing them overboard 😉 take care 5-23 -19
I will listen to this when I reach my first Mill
Though I truly do love and admire this original version - there's just some thing more meaningful and boldly unapologetic about Bobby Womack's version that sends a strong chill of reality right through your soul when he sings it. I am not saying that same experience isn't felt through Sam Cooke's version oh hell yeah it is - but when Sam sings it - it sounds more like a school educational teaching with Sam standing in front of the class room teaching you. But when Bobby sings it - he literally brings you spiritually to a neighborhood setting where you get a much more clearer visual interpretation of that same song. His reach down deep in the soul gravel tone singing style forces it straight in to you. With no walking on egg shells trying not to hurt your feelings or be apologetic no hell no Bobby's version clearly kicks you the listener right into a reality you might not like but are all too familiar with. Who out there can also agree with me on this????
Try Nina Simones version.
What a song !
What a singer !
What a 1960ties sound quality !
I love this song when I heard it 20yrs ago, love it!

Brilliant song that was originally done by Sam Cooke. There are other versions with distinctive styles ranging from Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Lou Rawls, Nina Simone just to name a few.
I think that Queen Bessie Smith might claim first dibs. I also like the version by the Chad Mitchell Trio.
DrBob Blind Bobby Baker, usually known as Bobby Leecan, recorded this song in 1927, two years before Bessie Smith.
This song was written by Bessie Smith in the 20s.
Great song, covered by so many. Try listening to versions by Sara Neimitz, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Katie Melua, Emmy Rossum and Otis Redding, just to name a few.

This song is still so true... the one you least expect to leave your side leaves when you've hit rock bottom just when you needed them most.... Trying to heal....

Sam Cooke is my favorite artist of all time, but Eric Clapton did this much better.
