Sam Cooke - Far Away Places Lyrics

Far away places with strange sounding names
Far away over the sea
Those far away places with strange sounding names
Are calling, calling me

Goin' to China, or maybe Siam
I wanna see for myself
Those far away places
I've been reading about
In a book that I took from a shelf

I start getting restless whenever I hear
The whistle of a train
I pray for the day I can get underway
And look for those castles in Spain
They call me a dreamer
Well maybe I am
But I know that I'm burning to see
Those for away places with strange sounding names
Calling, calling me
Calling, calling me

Just another one of my favorites! Thanks, Sam

  4. S.... P....

Like many of the great ones who left us way too soon, Sam gifted us with a tremendous and varied body of work. Whether he's swooning us with You Send Me, rocking the joint with Having a Party, belting the blues with his buddy, the great Lou Rawls with Bring it On Home to Me, mystifying us with A Change is Gonna Come, or moving us to our souls singing gospel- this was one special man. A gift to the Universe that keeps on giving- the Immortal Sam Cooke!

  5. R.... J....

MAYBE ONE DAY Sam I've meet u there, Massavana; A GIFT OF GOD!

  8. R.... J....

I dream of Africa nightly...this is not our home! Too much Hate!

  9. I.... M....

Much as I love Sam's voice I prefer Perry Como singing this song.

  10. D.... H....

This song goes WAY back. At our Commencement in 1949, the girls of the class sang this.

  11. l.... ....

Not a voice you simply *heard*, but one you *FELT*. He was a talent taken too soon and few today acknowledge. Love LOVE Sam Cooke!

    l.... ....

I wish music was still like this what happened?

  12. M.... ....

A great singer, great tone, diction and style, Sam could sing the phone book, and he had a broad outlook in music and life. He was similar to the great Ray Charles in that respect. I recently read a biography of Sam, "Dream Boogie", a good well-researched book by Peter Guralnick. I would have liked to have Sam stick around a little longer to see what he would do. But we can't have everything, because then, where would we put it? ;)

  13. M.... T....

My grandpa wrote his, never copyrighted it. Opps.

  14. F.... A....

IWAS 10? IT WAS "HIT PARADE" ON RADIO? SNOOKY LANSON WAS NO SAM HOO KNEW? MARVELOUS!!!

  15. J.... S....

Is this taken from the LP Cokes Tour I used to have it many moons ago but can't remember whether this song was on it. Either way Sam does it again ,kills it

  16. P.... R....

    Excellent Singer with Great songs.Oui.

  17. F.... A....

I AM BACK SO SOON BECAUSE I NO LOSS OF THIS MAN WAS A "VERY " REAL TRAGEDY!!!!

  18. F.... A....

WHAT A LOSS TO ALL OF US!!! WAY TOO SOON...POSSIBLY ONE OF A KIND...

    F.... A....

Definitely one of a kind. Thanks for listening! <3

  19. D.... ....

    :) ....

  20. H.... ....

    I like Engelbert's version better.

  21. l.... ....

One of the best songs sung by one the best singers. Sam Cooke had one of the smoothest voices ever. He made it sound so easy. Love love LOVE him!

  22. M.... B....

Can it get any better than this. This man, Sam Cooke, is truly the Muhamed Ali of singing (the GREATEST)

  23. T.... P....

Its so bless to see a young Lady like u my dear to love Sam's wonderful music and post it thanks to you. God blessing on u .

  24. D.... G....

once again a beautiful song by the great Sam Cooke!

    D.... G....

    You are so right.

  25. T.... ....

I love to wander around Youtube and listen to a half dozen versions of a song.
I loved Sams songs when I was a kid, and I loved this song, but I never heard him do it untill recently.
I think its a wonderful version, my favorite I guess. He evokes everyones longing to go over the hill, around the bend of the river, just to see whats there.
Its a shame, such a gifted vocalist and songwriter, gone in his early prime.
Whats tunes might he have written? What would he be singing now?

    T.... ....

As it was- he left us a remarkable body of work. Like Nat, Luther, Michael and Whitney- it's hard to see how they could have topped the work that they left us. This song is magic!

  26. M.... B....

There are and were many great singers I've heard: Jackie Wilson, Michael Jackson, Nat King Cole, etc. but Sam Cooke is truly the best.

  27. H.... M....

No , son that is NOT a Wu Tang Clan sample. What you should ask yourself when and if you find this alleged intro on this Sam Cooke IS... Did they sample COOKES intro ? Haha The master song stylist predates Wu Tang Clan by a HALF CENTURY haha
R.I.P. Sam Cooke . Your voice is and shall remain timeless...and one of the greatest

  28. T.... ....

Sam Cooke was one of those rare birds that wouldn't stay in a box.
You listen to some of his tunes, and you say; "He's this kind of singer and he does this kind of tune in this style, he belongs in This box."
Then you hear a song like this and your box falls apart.
I was lucky enough to hear his songs when they were first released.
They don't get old, just more mellow.

  29. J.... B....

I remember sitting in the living room with Dad listening to Sam Cooke on the Hi Fi .(I think I just dated myself) Dad reminishing of a bygone era when Sam was alive. And me captivated by this song of exotic places that only Sam could make me see and feel. To me he will always be the standard from which all those who followed him are measured.

  30. V.... S....

It may sound prejudice but this is the only version of this song I've heard and I don't desire to hear any others lol. There was simply something about Sam that drew you to him musically and so on. I say that he died at his best; he was at a peak all of his career and there he stayed. Sam was clearly a one of a kind. Just incredible <3

    V.... S....

I love this tune , my self too!!!..

    V.... S....

I haven't listened to or thought about this song in years. I went looking for it not remembering whose version I heard long years ago. Sam's version is beautiful and the photos are a great addition. Very nice.

  31. M.... ....

There is something about this song and Sam Cooke's voice that are made to go together. I can't define it in words. All I can say is that he is at his best on this song.
I have listened to other versions by very good vocalists, but they just don't measure
up to this. Thank you for posting this.

  32. i.... ....

    YOUR VERY WELCOME!

  33. V.... S....

Oh okay, you're probably right. You're welcome! Thank you for watching!

  34. i.... ....

IM NOT EXACTLY SURE WHICH ONE IT IS, BUT I KNOW ITS OFF THE WU TANG FOREVER ALBUM... ILL FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE IT IS IM THINKING OF, AND ILL GET BACK AT YA WITH IT... GOOD SONG THO'! SAM COOKE! WHAT A LEGEND, AND GREAT MUSICIAN! THANKS 4 THE UPLOAD!

  35. V.... S....

I don't know...you might lol. What song of theirs comes to mind?

  36. i.... ....

AM I HEARING A WU TANG SAMPLE IN THE VERY BEGINNING?!

  37. V.... S....

All of his songs were incredible. Thanks for watching, listening and commenting :D ♥

  38. J.... L....

    Sam Cooke did a superb
    job with this song..
    Sam was a great
    singer.

  39. V.... S....

@pissedoff7771 You mean Vitiligo and yes, I'll never understand why Michael felt he was unattractive. But Janet says that she despises her own smile which I don't get because she's gorgeous just like Michael was beyond handsome. But what went on in their minds we'll never know all...........thanks for commenting ♥

  40. V.... S....

@pissedoff7771 Well, life is not fair as I said before. Of course we wish death didn't come for some people as quickly as it has but those involved and know the real story behind Sam's death will stand before God and be judged. And it is through His judgement, they will not escape.

  41. r.... k....

sam was so fine.so was micheal i donot see how micheal thought he was ugly.how could he ever think that?girls would of been ringing mrs. jackson phone even if he had never sang.didnt he know that most teens go through pimples and arkwardness in teen years.some with glasses some with braces?i dont understand how he thought that.my grand boys aunt had viligago or what ever .marys skin had changed so much in the years i knew her.i thought she had been in a fire but later i found out different.

  42. r.... k....

by no means did i mean his talent was wasted.some old fool wasted his life.the woman he went to that motel with played the oldest trick in the world by having him take his clothes off to shower.sam had about five thousand dollars on him to christmas shop.the june before that new york had welcomed him at the copa.the copa was a big gig for blacks to make it there.they had a billboard that said sams the biggest cooke in town.6 months later he was gone how sad.the ho had pulled this before.

  43. V.... S....

@pissedoff7771 Why, that's good of you to do that. I do the same with my friends and younger cousin. Don't just familiarize them with music from these decades and decades prior, but movies as well. They enjoy them an awful lot. Getting today's generation to appreciate and love yesterday's great artists is so important because the music and movies are far too good to see fade away.

  44. r.... k....

i teach the great nieces, nephews, grandsons about the great music of the 1960s they say i wish i lived in the 1960s.i tell them about civil rights.i show them the marches on t.v.i tell them they are blessed that people give us a life worth living.i tell them they need to stop killing each other.that there generations doing to each other what the klan use to do.i give them a music and history lesson every chance i can.they need to know because i donot know what they are doing in school.

    r.... k....

rita king you are absolutely right! Thank you for saying this, Sam cooke was a legend. I don't know what's wrong with the young people today. Give me Sam cooke , Nat King Cole, satchmo, and Kanye, jayz, lil Wayne, and so many others can go away. Sam cooke made real music

  45. V.... S....

@pissedoff7771 I would not go so far as to say it was a waste of talent. Talent is wasted when someone truly gifted but fail to hone their skills. Sam sharpened his talents and thought outside the box - doing things that many Black artists then hadn't done. He used his wonderous gifts. But yes, life is rather unfair most times and in life, we lose many people. You are fortunate to have lived in a time where he was here. I never got to see him in his glory but I'm still a huge fan. Thanks ♥

  46. r.... k....

sam was so fine.i started listening to him when i was 12.my cousin introduced me to him.she loved sam very, very, much.i loved his voice and just when i got use to him,he was then gone.it was such a waste of talent.we hate people who take those away that we love.good people, talent people dont stay with us long.no good rats stay here forever.we lose our young,we lose the gifted,we lose the good and its so unfair.why must our hearts be broken? i love you sam at 12 and at 59.

  47. V.... S....

@1brookemybaby I know right! That's why I had to put this among a couple of others that I thought maybe some people didn't know of such as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Venus". Just extraordinary classics that in no way can ever be outdone. Thank you for the comment. It means so very much.

  48. V.... S....

@Tech158A Thank you so much for the comment. It means an awful lot. I think that Sam is the best ever and I'll never forget the first time I'd ever heard something outside of A Change is Gonna Come. His music made my life brighter. And you're very welcome !! =)

  49. T.... ....

Had his album as a kid with this and many other standards on it. Listened to it hundreds of times. He was one of the best ever. Thanks for posting.
