Salt 'n' Pepa - Heaven Or Hell Lyrics

[CHORUS]
Children play, women produce
Kids killing kids just for the juice
Now Africa is looking for the truth
But it's gonna take a while to enlighten the youth

In this edition of the story, no need to bore me
It can't do nothin' for me, even Denzel Washington couldn't find any glory
In the overcrowded streets of the city
I know it's shitty, but I can do without the pity
(Baby never lived in the ghetto)...or the projects
But I wear my Tim boots and Hi-Tecs, and I wrecks havoc
And if you try to play me I won't have it
Trix are for kids, this kid is not a silly rabbit
(Well) He's standin' on a corner with his system pumpin' loud
Next him goin' off, scream in the crowd
A whole lot of screams, a lot of broken glass
Brothers like to wear their pants fallin' off their ass
Girls today don't wear no bras
Little John Doe got a ho turnin' tricks in the bars
Grandma carries a can of mace
And she'll stick a .45 in your face

So come and meet my man Brett (Yo, what up, Brett?)
He's smokin', but it's not a cigarette (Speak on it, Pep)
I wonder how the hell a brother lets himself
Get into somethin' he can't out of? (Uh-huh, uh-huh)
A lot of my friends are sick and tired (Sick of who?)
The police (Word!) rollin' on 'em, pickin' on, holdin' on 'em
Hopin' that they got one of 'em
It was a drug bust, but something's weird
(Well, what's the matter, Spinderella?)
The way half a million disappeared

[CHORUS]

Heaven and hell is on earth
Heaven and hell is on earth

Who gives a damn about me?
(Huh?) Me (what?), me, yeah, little old me
Me, myself, and I
Live or die, laugh or cry
I'm all that I got, Pops, and that's a lot, Hops
I'd rather rot in jail before I ho-hop
Go 'head, me, tell 'em
They may be hard of hearing
So keep yellin' at the top of your lungs
Now everybody's got guns
They wanna be hard rocks and not be a fool
That buys a history book
Not me, I'll need a clock, not rock to my hits
And that two-fifth click to my tits
And Playgirl's gonna rip, and I'm-a have to rip shit
Ah, go for yours cuz you gotta
In the ghetto you don't get a medal if you settle for the drama
She's a gangster and the other terminal cancer
Ask too many questions and my Smith and Wesson will answer

Heaven and hell is on earth
Heaven and hell is on earth

Well everybody be damned, her father's in jail
Sister's on the corner screamin', "Booty for sale"
Mom spends the night gettin' drunk with her uncle
Her brother's sellin' radios and toasters by the trunkful
See, every man she ever messed would wind up dead
Some might fall in jail, others runnin' from the Feds
(The only thing she ever loved was a piece of lead)
And that's a double-barrelled pump underneath the bed

Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs and looney tunes
And some got sad songs, mad songs, and moody blues
There's good news and bad news, military coups
A rebel with no cause in a pack of fools
I never lived in the slum, never shot a gun
But I'll use one, don't make me use one

[CHORUS]

Heaven and hell is on earth
Heaven and hell is on earth

[CHORUS (repeat/fade)]

What pisses me off the most is now you have even females referring to them self’s and each other as bitches, including our new female artists of today on the MTV VIDEO AWARDS that are supposed to be the influence of our new generation, when you had females like salt and pepa spinderala and queen Latifa back in the day that worked very hard to divert the disrespectful mentality from mostly males in much effort to try to stop them from looking at females in that sense.... like it was all for nothing!

  11. P.... A....

I’m having a very hard time wondering why the salt, pepa, and spin, are not put high on a pedestal and being embarrassed as some of the most influential females of at least their generation When it comes to all genres of music not just hip hop! Any young ladies looking to achieve a dream career in the music industry should do their homework on these ladies, and aspire to be just like them! Salt, pepa, and spin, did it with an abundance of confidence, charisma, individuality and most of all, respect for them self’s. Even with some of their more sexy videos, you could tell they still demanded self respect! Not to sound like a male feminist (if that’s even a thing) but they were the epitome of girl power and should be set as an example for our young generation of females today ✨✨✨

  12. M.... ....

I've been looking for this song since I first heard it when I was 8 im so fucking happy I found it

  17. j.... b....

This song should be one of their classics! Amazing. Catchy and timely (even now). Prefer the album version though.

  19. M.... ....

They changed the last verse from the album for the video...but this was one of my favorites off that album.

    M.... ....

MsJoiBella - I like this verse better, but overall I like the album version better as a whole. Some differences in the flow of the background singers. One of my all-time favorites though, besides Gitty Up, Get Up, Champagne, None of Your Business (Rock version), and Do You Really Want Me.

  36. E.... L....

I really think some of the artists in hip hop and rnb are half way in they career stopped with some shady deal they record company gives em.

    E.... L....

    E Lo Marr - Lol!

    E.... L....

NYCJoeBlack I was trying to say that it's sorta shady how some of the hip hop and RNB artists in the 90s that coulda been HUGE but how? When most of them get a shady shitty record deal

  47. L.... ....

Oh, it's Salt-N-Pepa. The opening to this song has been playin' in my head for weeks, but I just couldn't call it. I thought it was Arrested Development. Thank goodness for _Google_ because *children play women produce* was just pickin' at me. Okay, now it's all comin' back to me. This is my first time seeing this video.

  61. t.... ....

I feel so late, but who are these women in the second verse?

    t.... ....

tyawnnewright lol, thought the same thing

    t.... ....

*Their names(separately) are Wink & D'Dae, their group name is Styowlz.*

  62. M.... P....

I remember listening to this song on their cassette in my SONY Walkman.

    M.... P....

    YES IS IT

    M.... P....

Me too. I loved it. This isn't the original I had (explicit) but I understand. Loved this whole cassette, I actually still have it around here somewhere too. 😆

    M.... P....

Fuck yeah big ole yellow Sony Walkman!!

    M.... P....

Do you far away minded people realise this song is about racism / racial oppression? ?

  63. S.... ....

I didn't know spin rapped as well in this one. I know she did in watta a man

  64. .... ....

    +++++++++++++++5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. M.... ....

    1:44 - Arrow nose

  66. J.... R....

I wonder where Herbie LoveBug is right now in 2016?! He & SnP made some really great music! It's sad how folks let petty stuff mess up their coins!

    J.... R....

Jp Reddy - Hopefully they can join forces and work on their latest album.

  67. J.... R....

They could really re-release this song as is! It's still that relevant in 2016!

    J.... R....

    I agree

    J.... R....

Its even relevant now, in 2027.

    J.... R....

I don't get why people put songs online if they don't appreciate them for what they are. Censorship is dumb! If you hate the song don't bother. Radio stations should follow the same practices. It's absurd hearing a song with a bunch of blanks in it.

    J.... R....

    Still relevant

  68. C.... P....

Necessary today. and unfortunately - Tomorrow AS WELL. #BLM

    C.... P....

Clayco Publishing, LLC It's funny because the album that this is on was titled "Very Necessary" too. I just now got that lol

  69. K.... M....

always loved this song, but never knew it was released and had a video <3

    K.... M....

yeah but it was a mistake releasing it in my opinion. I think the Very Necessary CD had much better options for singles like "Groove Me" which was in regular rotation in DC and Baltimore at the time and No One Does It Better which at one point they said would be a single but then it ended up being None of Your Business.

    K.... M....

Karen Mysti Wasn’t as played on MTV as much as the others. Only peaked at 18 on Top 20 Video countdown where the other 3 from the album went top 3 with Whatta Man hitting number one.

  70. I.... O....

    My mom is in this

    I.... O....

TTsisters Dance This has to be a great story :)

  71. B.... C....

The first time eva hearing this, it's dope.

  72. T.... N....

    still great after two decades

    T.... N....

    Flawless... Love this

  73. p.... b....

this is By far the best women hip hop rap group. thank you for keeping real

  74. w.... b....

dope, never knew about this song, funny how it holds alot of meaning during the current era.

    w.... b....

+will brock yeah this was the fourth single after Shoop Whatta Man and None of Your Business from the 1993 Very Necessary album. I was surprised they released this as a single.  There were better options like "Groove Me" or "No One Does It Better." or even "Somma Time Man" would have been stronger singles that would have push that album to another couple of millions sold in my opinion.

    w.... b....

+Jabbing Jay that's true. even though a lot of dance hall reggae songs borrow the same melody for the hooks. at one point No one does it better was supposed to be a single. I imagined a really sexy video to follow up after whattaman but next thing I knew none of your business was released. by the way Groove Me was in regular rotation on urban radio stations in Baltimore and DC way before none of your business and heaven and he'll were released

  75. T.... n....

Interesting that they changed Salts last verse. "Never shot a gun, but I'll use one! don't make me use one!". Kinda contradicting the song, but it's all good. love dem for sure.

    T.... n....

Power Respect they actually wanted to go more urban on very necessary and abandon the pop sound that made them superstars thanks to producer hurby. in the end the album was cut down the middle. Half pop R&B half urban. I think this was them going for more urban street sound with a message of course.

    T.... n....

@blk sophistication Not sure how your comment relates to mine.

    T.... n....

Yeah when I heard this version I was kinda disappointed but I understand the censorship. I enjoyed the original "explicit" version I had on cassette but it's not bad.

  76. S.... C....

I never knew about this song, but it's dope. The meaning behind it speaks to your soul

  77. A.... H....

Who were the other people rapping with Salt 'n' Pepa?

    A.... H....

+Annalise Hayes some strait up Gs!!!!

    A.... H....

+Annalise Hayes They went by the name Styowlz. The two other rapper chicks.

    A.... H....

yeah they were supposed to be the female answer to the group onyx.

    A.... H....

Thats exactly what I thought when I first got to see them in the video.

Thank you for answering a question I've been asking since this song first came out. My sister was super into SnP and played them A LOT. I remember this song stood out to me for some reason and now thinking back on it I'm pretty sure the instrumental itself and the two chicks (Styowlz?) going wild is what made this song stand out cause dont get me wrong SnP made good music and put in mad work but this song seemed different and more aggressive rapping and subject matter which I guess to me was kinda left field for them at the time.

  78. u.... ....

they went harder than rick ross' whole career
    well definitely have more integrity

  79. S.... C....

Is this about only where Spinderella talent was displayed outside of djing and modeling.   Cool about her. But a general observation

    S.... C....

+SOTBP Conference it's in that album that Spinderella started rapping.

    S.... C....

+Christophe Tam This Spinderella actually first started rapping on their third album 'Blacks Magic'

    S.... C....

SOTBP Conference sorry it took me about 3 years to respond but Spin rap on the last three albums which was black magic, Very Necessary, and Brand New. Although SaltNPepa hired her as a dj in the summer of 1987 people always seems to forget the girls always included her as not just a dj but as a MAJOR 3RD PART OF THE GROUP😘💯 #saltnpepa #djspinderlla #always #stillrockingthestage

  80. S.... ....

    357..HOAR..JUMP.....JUMP...JUMP....HERE WE GO...

  81. C.... P....

Girls today wearing bra's now, but forgetting their pants and twerking.

  82. N.... C....

its still like that today.... brothas like to wear their pants falling of their ass and girls today don't wear no bras!!!!!

  83. G.... T....

Brilliant song.Powerful, potent and sad that this message still resonates 20 years later Nothing has been done about gun violence in this country. #GutlessPoliticians

    G.... T....

well, as recent murder of one kid by another in Bronx shows, it's not just about guns. it's about social problems, wrongly understood honor, bullying and many other things

    G.... T....

So, it's politicians' fault that people murder each other?
And why just gun violence?  people will kill  someone with a hammer, knife, or get behind the wheel of a car after getting drunk---a LOT more people are killed every day from alcohol abuse but we almost NEVER hear about alcohol control.

    G.... T....

perhaps because guns increase a chance of lethal outcome; and also, when in wrong hands, increase a chance of violent act itself. . there's some difference between accidental  violence of someone who loses control, and premeditated shooting of people. . and yes. politicians arfe supposed to serve people and make life better; when they don't, they should get booted and new ones brought in

    G.... T....

    definitely!

  84. j.... ....

    Never seen/heard this before

  85. T.... J....

    Heaven... & Hell... CHOOSE ONE!

    T.... J....

    I know where I'm goin!^^^^

  86. D.... H....

I lost track of S&P after Push It. Too busy struggling to survive with 2 kids of my own to keep up with music. I'm catching up now and I have so much respect for them. Their music was so socially conscious with a message that was positive. Especially teaching younger women to value themselves. Props to them. Remarkable ladies.

  87. D.... H....

Is that Duane Martin playing the first father in this video? It looks a lot like him when he was younger.

    D.... H....

+Debbie Hund No it looks like Byron Minns

  88. N.... B....

Me and my high school friends did this song for a school contest, we were the cool kids after that lol...i miss those days!!

  89. b.... t....

I love salt n pepa and a nigga only 14 lol

  90. C.... T....

All these years this song is still in my head. I still know when this song first came out.

  91. h.... ....

who are the other two rappers besides salt n pepa? is one of them yo-yo?

    h.... ....
