I feel like this song is about an emotionally abusive relationship.
Ivy is the “abuser” abusing the person by suffocating them with their emotional problems and not letting them express their own troubles which makes the relationship one-sided and toxic.

(hence why it said “baby, sweetheart, you’re so insecure” meaning they have heavy insecurity issues) along with the lines “fill me with your need; I don’t need to breathe” which is referencing (for me) all the emotionally draining problems Ivy(abuser) throws on to the person and doesn’t let them “breathe”(express how they feel also)

The lines: oh I understand, always understand. What’s the problem? Is them asking what’s wrong with Ivy and Ivy expresses they aren’t there enough emotionally. Which in fact is wrong since it’s an emotionally abusive relationship. So the person cuts the relationship off due to the tension between them and Ivy since Ivy no longer sees them as help to their huge insecure and emotional issues.

But that’s just what I think it’s about, it may be really wrong but that’s how I interpret this song. 💜

I get how you could say that if billie was a 'sellout artist' (however one might define it) but i have seen her interviews and she is genuinely invested in her art-- she is there in the whole process; the lyrics, the production of the music and the singing itself. That said, I actually bought a lot of their discography. I've supported over the years because they had promise from the get go, but other than this track so much feels unfulfilled in terms of production value. And even this track isn't very involved, I just love the textures, but I really don't think it's a particularly appropriate 'high point' on an album this late into music history. I think if they spent more time, like an additional week per 2 or 3 tracks, it could go a long way and make them sound a lot less like an XX nostalgia band, which would mean a lot to me because I don't particularly like the XX. The self-titled LP was saturated, too many sketchy vignetty tracks and many of the songs are so simple it's kinda shocking. I suck at instruments and can't even read music, other than middle C (I can spot that every time in treble clef lol) but when I pick up a friend's guitar and noodle, ten mins in I find myself half way through a sales track. But maybe this is all just moist punk and I'm reading things wrong. Ultimately, I just wanna see them grow some more but that second album sounds the same as the first one.
