Saint Etienne - Side Streets Lyrics

The neighborhood that I live in
I've always seen as home
At certain times of the evening
It's like a no-go zone

Got cash in my pocket to last the weekend
And I've got features I quite like and don't mind keeping

But still I walk the
Side streets home
Even when I'm on my own
If I let myself believe all the bad press and horror stories
I wouldn't set a foot outside

You say I live in a bubble
I find a bubble's best
At a faint whiff of trouble
Just turn and head due west

Quite light on my feet if I ever need be
As I zip down the street no one ever sees me

That's why I walk the
Side streets home
Even when I'm on my own
If I let myself believe all the bad press and horror stories
I wouldn't set a foot outside

I'm tempting fate (I know, tell me about it)
So nonchalant (I know, and I don't doubt it)
I'll probably get it tomorrow

'Til then I'll walk the
Side streets home
Even when I'm on my own
If I let myself believe...

(Side streets home...)
(On my own...)

Believe...

I've tried so hard to find this song for many years and at last I found it!! It was my no.1 song in my electronic dictionary made by Sharp which now I no longer to use. This song reminds me my teenage memories and feelings. I listened it when I'm studying, feeling sad or imagine what I'll gonna be in the future.

    L.... J....

You had an electronic dictionary which was also a music player? Amazing! I love that era of technology. Was it something similar to this:

Sadministrator Yeah it is :) We had a real fad of this kind of dictionaries. I still think that this dictionary was more joyful than iPhone which I use it these days.

  7. t.... ....

wonder what else by them is similar, sounds really nice

    t.... ....

Hobart Paving - best song they ever did

  8. s.... ....

This isn't how I imagine the song at all...and why is the woman driving a car when the song is all about walking the side streets? Terrible video, lovely song.

    s.... ....

Not sure where you got the idea that the woman driving the car is the subject if the video as she's only in it for like, thirty seconds, tops. Also, music videos don't have to perfectly mimic the lyrics to the song, in fact it's very much seen as corny and hack, there's even a term for it called "Mickey mousing".

    s.... ....

Yeah, I know about Mickey Mousing, but a woman is singing the song and says things like "I zip down the streets, no one ever sees me". She does seem to be the subject the song. The video has a man striding down subways in a macho, confident way. It doesn't seem to fit.

  9. D.... S....

    Beautiful backing vocal arrangement

  29. t.... ....

@PatsyS3 Hi Patsy and Kinitawowi - - -I'm one of the vocal arrangers on this album (and this song) the other, (and the main harmony vocals) on this song is Anthony Rivers. I agree with you about this album. Very sad to see it not be a success---critics LOVED it but the record company they were with were useless and didn't promote it at all.
    Tony Rivers

finisterre is actually the latin name for the remote northwestern corner of spain known as cape finisterre.. literally meaning 'the end of the world,' the name is a reference to the city of compostela located in the area which during the middle ages constituted the greatest catholic pilgrimage shrine in europe.. the french finistère is a different spelling and geographic region entirely.. :-)

  31. J.... B....

No. I can't ken - you have race issues - you are a racist.

  32. k.... ....

Now to answer your question; as stated in the title, the band is "Saint Etienne", named after a city in the South East of France. In fact the band, a male duo, plus a vocalist (think Massive Attack type affair), are Londoners and took the name of their favorite football team, St Etienne. Another of their albums is named, "Finnisterre", another place in France. Interestingly, they took the English spelling with two "r"s, which is probably also the old French spelling: "land's end"

  33. j.... ....

    lol ure right

  34. k.... ....

Foreign?? What CAN you mean? This is the in-ter-net... Roughly 300 hundred countries citizens online. If by, 'foreign' you mean, not-American, can you see how insular that seems?

  35. j.... ....

who is this artist? foreign? anyone have the link to a song by this artist called downey california

  36. p.... ....

Couldn't agree more. Saint Etienne: flawless tunes and perfect aestethics

  37. S.... B....

Absoloutely gorgeous. There's some French pop, Brazilian pop going on here, acoustic Beatles, Beach Boys, even Sideshow by Blue Magic! I love the way that Saint Etienne, Everything But the Girl and Stereolab could cross all kinds of genres whether deep house, dance, minimalism or pop but with such beauty!

  38. i.... ....

This is one of the most relaxin' joints I've ever heard. 5/5

  39. b.... ....

Oh please. Much as the 'Cliff-but-it's-not-music' viewpoint is relevant, it's not my own. Try reading the lines instead of between them.

  40. f.... ....

Sarah you are England for me.

  41. K.... ....

Tales From Turnpike House is one of only two albums I've ever rated ten out of ten. This - and the whole album - is stunning.

  42. b.... ....

So many new artists, pretty much exclusively from the r&b/hip hop genres, have become completely fascistic in their world-view (women as grateful cleaners/homosexuals as 'sinners' etc...etc). But far worse, there's a huge audience of children adopting these backward attitudes. For this liberal, this is incredibly worrying and for this pop-fiend, desperately sad.

  43. b.... ....

This recent derogatory usage of the term 'gay' is on the one hand comically pre-pubescent, but on the other... a little disturbing. Pop culture used to celebrate the 'outsider'. In fact the more 'outside' you were, the more you'd be welcomed 'in'.

  44. C.... E....

Yeah, when it comes to lovely, Bacharach-style pop, St. Etienne has few peers.

  45. j.... ....

Only Saint Etienne can write music like this.

  46. B.... C....

Such a wonderful song. Then again Saint Etienne can really do no wrong! (and to the guy who thinks that liking this song is gay.....get a life, jerk)

  47. S.... ....

So what? I bet I have more cd singles with cd roms on them than you. Which is more important.
