Sailor - Blue Desert Lyrics

Betty Grable on the wall keeps my cabin warm
From Casablanca down to Rio, she won't feel the storm
I only joined the fleet for places and girls I hadn't see
I didn't think of all the lonely nights we spend between
Blue desert, blue desert
Wish that I was far away from this blue desert
My only oasis is the bright harbour town
But they're just distant places and
I never know where I'm bound

Gazing out my porthole view in hopes of sighting land
But just another blue horizon hides the burning sand
I should have stayed behind wherever the girls were good to me
Instead of turning back again to face that lonely sea
...

Blue desert
Blue desert
Blue desert
...

I remember singing this song in primary school in the late 80s/early 90s. The teacher used to play guitar and we did a performance of this song as a class, changing the lyrics. Baring in mind we were so young that we had no idea who Sailor were lol. Our teacher must have been a fan.

One of the good things about the mid=seventies was the number of unusual bands that never quite made it to the gold medal position - Foxx, Cockney Rebel - but whose music remains much more interesting than the bigger names of the era. Sailor are in that category. Lots of lost or hidden gems all over their back catalogue. Makes the era new all over again.
