Sage Francis - Black Out On White Night Lyrics

Lights are out, phones are dead
and I'm the only thing that's runnin in this city
except for the clouds
and man they're comin down
if i knew my way around wouldn't feel so dizzy

where's tele? nobody can tell me
i don't speak a lick of that language and got a slippery memory
if i spelled it all out on my arm, only if
but i didn't so i think get a grip kid, deal with it
baby's waiting for a ring
wont settle for the substitute excuse that's forming
i got a complicated case of escapism
for her i try to rewire my nature
too tired to wake her up
odder that artificial calm she was on
drug-induced future that slipped out of her palms
seductive rain dancer, she thinks i'm waterproof
like superman doesn't need a roof over his head
when i come home to roost i need truth to hold in bed
but i'm seeking salvation in a booth

and the phones are dead
and the lights are out
and i'm the only thing livin in this ghost town
except for the clouds, and man they're comin down
if i knew my way around by now i'd be bound for home

blackout on white night in rome
blackout on white night in rome

i know that i'm in love, but i know i'm out of touch
and i know that i get dumb when i can sense something's up
and then i bottom out
European tailspins
scrolling messages out on my pale skin
in hopes that they get mailed in
before the ink poisoning takes effect
and it gets smudged because i budge before letting paint set
i get judged by the ones who have shelter and rain checks
while i trudge through the mud cuz its pouring to rain sweat
regain consciousness and lose common sense
the ominous dark skies that lie between me
and providence are signs
the obvious answer isn't standin on your face with stilettos on
if you pop the question wrong
every song's a post afterthought
i wont grab the chalk to outline my body of work
toe-tags get caught in my teeth
cuz my foot is in my mouth
and spurs are in my words so my tongue cant dismount
even after our rapport had fully run its course
couldn't figure out the most heroic time to jump from the horse
and place this old hat for the last time
on the coat rack
but i donate all of my earnings from this race
just to know that
resisting urges to go back and get it later
like the milk wouldn't sour itself in the refrigerator
a wet boy
in a dry, dry state
on an old country road
where tradition has a blind date
i make it dance on its own grave tonight
with a change of direction by the pale moon light

and if it needs theme music i'll break out the bagpipes
and play a tune a ghost wrote me in a past life
that goes like...

blackout on white night in rome
blackout on white night in rome
blackout on white night in rome
blackout on white night in rome

I haven't bought an album since A Healthy Distrust but still love what I hear now and then. He still sounds the same, familiar but not boring. In his phrasing.

  3. K.... J....

the Bob Dylan of hip hop. never has there been a greater wordsmith, nor will there ever be. Sage. Motherfucking. Francis. respect the broccoli cock.

i wish I knew what that girl in the background is saying...

    N.... R....

X Bears I think she said she's spitting!??

    N.... R....

It's an excerpt from Dante's Inferno

Something about weeps echoing in starless sky. Google translate isn't very generous in this case.

Quivi sospiri, pianti e alti guai
    risonavan per l'aere sanza stelle,
per ch'io al cominciar ne lagrimai.

  12. W.... ....

kinda wish the beat had more of a bassline

    W.... ....

lol, me too. sorry about that

  13. O.... ....

To me, Uncle Sage is like the Leonard Cohen of Hip-Hop. Simply incredible.

    O.... ....

@Opiinferidii love the comparison :D hate that I didn't come up with it.

    O.... ....

he explores his style a lot like him

    O.... ....

i've always referred to him as the Dylan of rap. word play and such. but yes, simply incredible indeed.

  14. A.... ....

My new favorite Sage song. Feels incredibly real

  15. J.... J....

Thank you for this musical masterpiece Sage. Your music is really something else, I've never connected to any song this much. This entire album is so real, so heartfelt, music like this keeps me going.

That goddamn line towards the end; "I get judged by the ones who have shelter and rainchecks, while i trudge through the mud cause this foreign terrain wet!" is the best thing ever.

  23. s.... ....

I'm not linking it to how good they are, I was just stating something that came to my attention.

  24. y.... ....

what's the point of comparing where more people listen to an artist?

  25. s.... ....

Realy? Wow, I bet more people per town in the US listen to him than here in the UK then. No-one heard of him after Dry Your Eyes Mate. :/

  26. y.... ....

I know a lot of Americans who listen to the streets.

  27. s.... ....

@wordsliketurds His poeticness reminds me of The Streets, but if you're American you probably don't know of him.

  28. s.... ....

    I came... through my ears.

  29. u.... ....

This picture looks like Sage is doing triceps dips on invisible parallel bars. Great song by the way.

  30. R.... ....

Someone should upload this running onto Hell of a Year.

  33. B.... M....

I had no clue Buddy Wakefield did the vocals in this. I always thought it was a chick singing O_o

    B.... M....

it is. Buddy does the quick bit at the very end.

    B.... M....

it is. Buddy does the quick bit at the very end.

  34. n.... s....

    well spoken

  35. I.... ....

@joshcoughranmayne I loved it...especially this song...it really hits me hard...

  36. D.... ....

    illest sage song.

  37. O.... W....

    fantastic

  38. T.... ....

New fav song by him, its like you can feel the universe.

  39. J.... V....

Well, I think his first two albums were better, and some of the "Sick of..." cds as well, but this is still incredible stuff. After listening to Sage pretty much everything else feels just plain stupid, lame and childish... Greatest writer ever, to me.
