Sabaton - Union (Slopes Of St. Benedict) Lyrics

As a turn of the tide
It is our turn to rise
The force of a union at war
March over the mountains
On our way to the north
On the road that will lead us to Rome
Our way will not be easy
It will take us through hardship and pain
Hill after hill breaking their line of defense
Head at north

Mile after mile our march carries on
No army may stop our approach
Fight side by side
Many nations unite
At the shadow of Monte Cassino
We fight and die together
As we head for the valley of death
Destiny calls
We'll not surrender or fail

To arms!
Under one banner
As a unit we stand
And united we fall -
As one fighting together
Bringing the end to the slaughter
Winds are changing
Head at north!

What if Sabaton made a song about mixing their songs together like in metal

  8. G.... ....

Want to make the global union against the Nazis at Monte Cassino more complete?

The US division that initially assaulted the monastery was the 100th Battalion, a battallion formed almost exclusively by Hawaiian-born Americans of Japanese decent.

    Go for Broke.

  9. r.... ....

Easily the best Sabaton song right here.

  10. C.... ....

Italy was sometimes called "the graveyard of armies". I think this song explains perfectly the reason why

  11. P.... M....

Love these way cool history lessons with music.

This was also the battle that gained the 100th battalion, then attached to the 34th, it's legendary status as the Purple Heart Battalion. In less than a month, they nearly took the entirety of Cassino, but ran out of supplies. It was the last battle the original 100th took place in because it's ranks were so depleted as well as the only battle in the war that they were forced to leave their fallen behind.

  17. S.... U....

British india in monte casino? Thats rare i thought they only fought in asia and some in Africa

    S.... U....

India is often times overlooked even though it was one of the largest volunteer forces in both world wars, with 1.7 million soldiers in WW1 and over 2.5 million in WW2. Albeit a lot of the time the British Indians were auxiliary or put in logistical/support positions, but Indians made up a MASSIVE contribution to both wars, just like French colonial forces in WW1. They're often times forgotten because they weren't a major power.

  18. A.... ....

One of the units that also fought at Monte Cassino was the 100th Infantry Battalion which was made up nearly entirely by second generation Japanese-Americans.

  19. C.... N....

Gotta love how much having a common enemy can do.

  20. T.... M....

    3:18 goosebumps!!!

    T.... M....

I'm really late to say this but seriously THAT PART IS SO FUCKING GOOD. It comes off as so genuine like it's a general shouting it desperately in the middle of a fight! God damn joakim is a gift from heaven. That part easily takes the top spot for best standalone part their songs, closely followed by the tone shift in a ghost in the trenches

  34. A.... !....

Canadians are known as friendly and peaceful but if you try to fuck with us we can be quite dangerous and ruthless. we have several victories of our own despite our tiny military. some of our most prominent ones being the war of 1812 and pushing the americans back and burning down their white house, the battle of Gravenstafel Ridge and St. Julien lasting between April 22 to May 5, 1915, Vimy Ridge lasting between April 9 to 12, 1917 and Amiens lasting between Aug. 8 to 12, 1918. we have have lost many men and battles, but NEVER have we lost a war. fuck with a canadian and your fucking with a sleeping dragon.

    A.... !....

Anime4Life !! The British burnt down the Whitehouse not the Canadians

  35. M.... ....

Easily one of my favourite Sabaton Songs!

  36. S.... ....

Does anyone else think the line:

As a Unit we stand and United we fall

Sound.....wrong, It makes it seem like they're falling instead of the enemy.

    S.... ....

I mean 55,000 Allied soldiers died during this battle compared to the 20,000 axis soldiers so that’s probably where that comes from

  37. Z.... ....

Finally a song about my country...

    Z.... ....

    F.... S....

  42. B.... G....

Is this a Nazi song? Someone posted it on my discord, the song sounds nice, but tbh it's setting off some red flags.

    B.... G....

No its about the battle of monte casino a major battle between the Allied forces and the German army in Italy that ended in an allied victory which let them push on to Rome

    B.... G....

"Is the song a Nazi song."

Jesus Christ why does everybody think that.

  43. L.... ....

Honestly, you know why Polish soldiers are best?
    We had a bear,Wojtek

    L.... ....

Leszy I guess the polish army is only successful when not containing polish men then

  46. T.... O....

It was perhaps not the best idea to shell the monestary

  47. P.... S....

Wanna know a good strategy? Bomb empty, unused abbey at the top of the hill -> turn it into a pile of rubble -> let the germans get inside and build fortifications -> loose thousands of your soldiers while trying to conquer it... I wonder which hollowhead moron invented such strategy...

    P.... S....

Well its pretty dumb if you think that they planned to lose thousands of men. So no idiot came up with that plan. You did.

    P.... S....

They could easily anticipate that it was coming, but they did it anyway, and managed to do everything the bad way. It would not be so difficult to just let the abbey stay as it did before and not bomb it. Then noone would be needed to conquer it. And when they bombed it, they could quickly get inside before the germans did. And when they didnt get inside the abbey soon enough, they could just go around and wait for the germans to surrender. It takes some skill to do everything the wrong way...

    P.... S....

Well, you do realize that the Germans did not care for occupying religious buildings and regularly did it as a tactic, right? They did this all the time because the Allies probably wouldn't be too fond of blowing up a church, but that changed and time and time again they continuously bombed Germans that were hiding in churches and other religious buildings. So why did they stop here? How could they EASILY anticipate something that goes in the face of everything the Germans had done until that point.

Its also rather hard to take Monte Cassino when the 8th Germany Army is funneling a massive amount of resources and effort, most likely the most in the entire front, onto Monte Cassino. They were giving every possible resource for that strongpoint to buy time.

You say that its pretty easy to just encircle it... But do you think that they just left their flanks open? Italy isn't very wide, its not easy to just "Go around something".

Warfare is a lot easier said than done. You seem to have a hard time understanding that "Just going around it" is a LOT harder done than said.

    P.... S....

I dont have any hard time understanding that just going around it is a lot easier than going straight into it.

  48. P.... H....

I guess you could say taking Monte Cassino was a *gamble*

  54. T.... A....

Fun Fact: Second Lieutenant Eric Waters, father of Roger Waters the lead writer of Pink Floyd, died at this battle, with the Anzio bridgehead's line breaking and the tigers breaking free. This was one of his inspirations for the Wall

  55. P.... ....

This song is such a missed opportunity of greatness... The stand and defense of the axis soldiers on monte casino was one of the most heroic acts of the war, they held out against countless enemies fighting until they ran out of ammo, after that they hid on the slopes armed with nothing more than shovels, knives and rocks and still held it for quite a while.
At the same time the allies committed one of greatest crimes against culture in the war by leveling down the monastery on the hill to the ground with endless bombing.
I mean, the unity is nice and all but there was very little heroism on the allied side in this battle, they outnumbered the enemy heavily, had constant air support and nigh endless supplies.
I love Sabaton but this song always makes me somewhat angry.

    P.... ....

PerunsZGRevenge Azis should’ve thought about all the culture damages that would happen before they started the damn war. Also keep in mind the churches in Belgium leveled by the Luftwaffe. :)

    P.... ....

    One's crime doesn't justify another's.
+ check out how old that monastery was

    P.... ....

PerunsZGRevenge Those church’s sin Belgium where often hundred of years old.
As for one crime not excusing another, the Nazis where so horrid I simply don’t give a damn. Same with the Japanese.

  56. t.... t....

if someone hasn't already, wonder how a world of tanks vid would look like with this song?

    t.... t....

tiger tank gaming impossible! This song is about unity, have you ever seen anything like that in WoT.

  58. M.... K....

I'd like to hear a song about two Polish brothers fighting each other.
It's a kind of Polish nation tragedy, that many of dead Polish from the Monte Cassino was Wehrmacht soldiers - brought from occupied lands.
There is a case of brothers who are buried in various cemeteries: one attacking the monastery in Polish uniform, and the other - defending it as a Wehrmacht soldier :(

    M.... K....

Are you sure it was about the polish brothers? As far as I know, people from my nation weren't recruited to Wehrmaht.

  59. M.... D....

I can sing this song without lyrics lol

  60. X.... Z....

al thanks to Polakis and Niedzwiedz Woytek.

  61. F.... I....

They didn't liberated us, they transformed us in one of they colonies, they have done a lot of crimes here, killed men, women, children, all forgot thanks their propaganda, in that war Italy died 2 times: 1 as puppet of germans, 2 as invaded and destroyed nation, so: thanks America, thanks England and Free France..........

    F.... I....

FuriaItalica Che la dea Italia sia con voi Shouldn’t have declared war in the Allies than. The Americans where more than content to just wage war against the Japanese, it was the Germans and you Italians who declared war on them first. Simply put you got what you had coming.

    F.... I....

Hunter Smith Italy in all this didn't had choice, that declaration wasn't a declaration by Italy, don't forget that idiot of Mussolini, he saw that Hitler was winning an he did one of the biggest mistakes of the history. Don't forget: Mussolini was a dictator, even if we tried to stop his bullshit that try would cost a lot of good people, we had no choice. What you told doesn't justify violences, rapes and other crimes commited by the Allies against our civilians that war wasn't their.

    F.... I....

FuriaItalica Che la dea Italia sia con voi The Italian people enabled the rise of the Duce. If he was so horrible you should’ve rose up. As for whatever the crimes the West committed towards you , just know we could’ve let the red have you.

    F.... I....

Kinda weird how under the occupation of Allied rule, Italy became one of the strongest economic powers in Europe. Its almost like you weren't a puppet of the other nations.

Also you're saying that Mussolini declared war, but not Italy? I don't understand, but then you go onto saying that Hitler was winning, not Germany was winning, this doesn't make sense to me

Also how did Mussolini get to power if he didn't have people to support him? Millions supported him and thats how he got into power, so it seems kinda strange that you make it seem like nobody liked him.

Also the most baffling thing here is that you said that we didn't liberate you. But then you go onto saying that Mussolini declaring war was a huge mistake, that Mussolini was a horrible dictator, and that he would kill you if you opposed him. But you say we didn't liberate you? What kind of sense is that? Are you saying you would have preferred to live under Mussolini? Because you sure as hell don't seem like it.

Also literally every country that has ever been to war has committed war crimes, whats your point here? Italians had concentration camps as well.

    F.... I....

I'd try to sympathize but y'all invaded Greece for no reason so take that pity dick out of your mouth

  62. S.... S....

Listening to this right after the episode of Band of Brothers where Guarnere found out his brother died and all I can think is “Where the fuck is Monte Cassino”

  63. H.... S....

As has been mentioned before, yes, a bear did serve under the Allied Forces during the Battle of Monte Casino. His name was Wojtek, a Polish citizen who received an official rank and designation (later promoted to corporal). He was encountered by the Polish expatriates whilst fighting in Africa when a small child presented young Wojtek wrapped in a blanket to the Polish soldiers. Apparently his mother had been killed by hunters and the young refugee somehow came into possession of the cub. The men became extremely fond of him, often wrestling with the bear and playing other games with him. Wojtek was extremely friendly, although he terrified other allied soldiers upon first encounter. He could also smoke and drink beer which he loved. When his unit was moved out of Egypt the British wouldn't allow him on board, "no animals allowed". So his unit appealed to the exiled government to grant Wojtek citizenship and then draft him, which they did. His famous moment was at Monte Casino when his unit had to leave him behind with American artillery who were scared to death of him and had him chained up. He watched as men transported crates of shells and mimicked them, picking up crates himself and carrying them to their destination. I'm so happy to have some Polish blood in me. :D

    H.... S....

I'm Polish and I've studied about Wojtek on history 😀

    H.... S....

I'm just imagining the look on like a German artillery spotters face when he realized that nature itself has taken up arms against his country.

    H.... S....

And don't forget that Wojtek inspired Wini the Poo. I think.

    H.... S....

Seth McIntyre winnie the pooh was based on a different bear, that was the mascot of the 2nd Canadian brigade, its a similar story but its not the same bear.

If it weren't for the polish taking Monte cassino for the allies who knows what the outcome would be

    T.... F....

Another division would have taken it? Its not like only polaks were capable of doing so

    T.... F....

We would have still won the war. Simple. It wouldn't even have taken a week longer to end the war. Does not taking the hill stop the Soviets? I don't think so.

  65. S.... ....

My great grandfather fought in the early days of Monte Cassino and got wounded and his fingers were positioned like the legs of an ant or spider for the rest of his life well at least according to my Dad.

  67. M.... M....

The quote at the begining sends chills down my spine every time

  68. D.... D....

Funny isnt it? The nazis destoried a great deal of things from art work to religious buildings. But the one time the germans said "Yeah, we wont hind in this place and get it destoried" and the allies just go ahead and do it anyway. That battle never would have happend if they had got more or better intel.

    togetger fuck yeah
    1 year later
allies sell half of europe to stalin including another alies like poland or czechoslovakia

    L.... K....

Legionista Kałacha Well, do you have a better alternative? Europe (And most of the world!) just suffered around 6 years of misery. So, at that point, having another one doesn't seem like a good idea. Also, FYI, Churchill did want to attack the Soviets, look up "Operation Unthinkable". The plan was rejected due to the sheer numerical superiority of the Soviets.

In any case, there was no other peaceful choice. It was either let the Soviets take the land or start another bloody war.

    L.... K....

Well what were the west suppose to do? Waste millions of lives fighting the Soviets for what reason? The Soviets lost the most lives in the entire war, don't you think it would make sense for them to get Eastern Europe? WW2 would not have been won without the Soviets.

  71. D.... H....

Fun fact: There was a historical abbey that the Germans didn't occupy, because they knew it was historical. The allies bombed that abbey anyway because they thought the Germans would use it, and when it was reduced to a pile of rubble, the Germans occupied the rubble and fought from there.

    D.... H....

@Davide david There were 55,000 Allied casualties in that battle alone not to mention the casualties to even gain a foothold in Italy. Fuck your Abby.

    D.... H....

@just a random gal Well, yes, defeating the Germans was more important.

    D.... H....

@American Patriot i vet your point, but the abby wasn't used by the axis so destroying it and letting them use the rubble increases casualties rather than lower them so it hindered progress

    D.... H....

@Steve Guild What country you from, if its Britain i want to inform you it is prove that you that if nit for Poland the battle of Britain would have been lost, because the Polish had the highest kill death ratio despite joining the battle 3 weeks late and due to the number if pilots.

    D.... H....

Yeah it is mentioned in Sabaton History video...

Brits knew about Katyń comunists crime, where was killed 20ooo Polish officers and no say to Polish goverment or Polish soldiers.

A lot of historical say that better for Poland it was cooperate with Hitler , then cooperate with aliances ( watch at Czechoslovakia or Hungary ) . Hitler was more honest for countries who cooperate with him, then aliances for Poland. But Polish when have choice mind or honor - they take honor. Not like France, GB and USA, who had inly business withouth honor and sold 4th aliance power country who was most destroy at WW II .

Today we have " Dzień Żołnierzy Wyklętych " , Day anticomunists resistance,, who was killed by Jewish comunists who working for Stalin and they directed of tortured and kill Polish WW II heroes.

My late grandfather fought at Monte Cassino as part of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, 201st Guards Brigade. He was known as "Bren Gun Bob" as the name suggests he was a Bren gunner. I have memories of him sharing his experiences in Italy with me (like being shot at by a sharpshooter when he was in an outhouse). The song holds a special meaning to me and because it has that meaning it tears at my heart a good deal. God speed Bren Gun Bob.

In fact the abbey and the surrounds hills were abandoned by the germans on the night of 18th May because the allies were advancing in the Liri Valley below and they could be trapped at the back.

@pitrson ' Nazis were exterminating Italians too
but it's also true that only them fought on our land
The Italian Army was...shitty, to say the least, it was in no condition to fight one of the best armies in the world

AND it's also true that the Germans weren't as welcomed as Allies due to things called "SLAUGHTER"
Just because we didn't want to fight in a war where we had nothing to gain
