Sabaton - Ett Slag Färgat Rött Lyrics

[Swedish version:]

Vid Fraustadt stod den svenska hären inför
En nästintill dubbelt så mänstark motståndare.
Den dagen visade vi världen inte enbar vår
Överlägsenhet i strid utan även
Hur grym människan kan vara i krig.

Fruset land
En köldhärjad här
Föds som demoner ur krutrök
Rehnskiölds män
Stormar dess flank
Fruktat hans namn är i strid

En för en, flyr Sachsens män hem
Död väntar dem

Gjuter blod
Möter döden vid Fraustadt
Syndaflod
Genom fiendens led
Gjuter blod
Ingen nåd kommer givas, där

Står på led
Öga mot öga
Visar mod
Stridsformation
Domedag

[English version:]

Killing Ground

At Fraustadt the Swedish forces faced
An army almost twice its size.
And on that day we showed the world not only
Our superiority in battle but also
How cruel man can be.

Frozen ground,
Ride with the wind
Emerge from the gunsmoke like demons
Rehnskiöld's men
Charging their flanks
The enemy trembles with fear

One by one the Saxons disband
Or die where they stand

Killing ground
Even though you surrender
Turn around
You will never survive
Killing ground
At the battle of Fraustadt

Fall in line
Battle formations
Show no fear
Riding them down
Break their will
Show them no mercy
Caroleans attack

Round them up, look into their eyes
They beg for their lives

See the Caroleans standing tall
All for one and one for all
Enemies fall at their feet
Begging for their mercy
See the Caroleans standing tall
Conquer lands and slaughter all
Enemies fall at their feet
Victory and great defeat

    K. A. Well they probably could have, but they chose not to push further into sweden

@Ugglehjälm true but stockholm is greately defended by land sea and weather so casualties would be great even for Russians

    B.... G....

Look up Daladansen 1743 and you will see Russian imperial troops in Stockholm:)

    B.... G....

@Ugglehjälm There was joint invasion between Denmark, Britain, Russia, and possibly the Netherlands (Holland?) planned, IIRC. This was given up after the crushing danish defeat during the battle of Helsingborg, 1710. Tsar Peter even said himself he had no intention to take Swedens province east of the baltics from them, save for St. Petersburg (aka Finland and modern day Latvia and Estonia). It is possible that Peter I may have had other things in sight, more valuable to him then Finland, perhaps to the east or southeast. We'll never know since he died only four years after the wars end. He did write in his will though that "Russia shall always be at war with Sweden" and basically Russia must always keep cutting them down to size. No mention of annexing Finland or Sweden though, IIRC...

    TL:DR
maybe possible, would be bloody tho and eh theres better stuff to waste lives on then some cold city with barely any people

@Fredrik Engström While I agree with most of your points I do disagree that evil is something that changes. Evil to me has remained the same as long as mankind has existed, it is to act arrogantly and act selfishly in a way that it harms others. That is Evil in a very general sense. It is both arrogant and selfish to kill another human outside of war or danger. Back then though most people were not that educated and did not have objective morals like we have today. To them the norm was, what was right and by that point in history and since thousands of years earlier soldiers on the field had killed POWs mainly because they need food, shelter and constant guarding which is a waste of manpower and resources in the eyes of ancient kings and generals.

Killing a defenseless man that did not ask to go to war is Evil and was considered Evil back then as well but if you did not obey your commander or general when he ordered their executions you could be next in line. People had to think about their families at home and could not afford to be moral in those situations. They did what they had to in order to survive just like most other men and women in older times. So I would say that even if you are well educated on the subject I still think you could learn to have a more nuanced view, same goes for the other guy.

    A.... A....

What I am trying to argue is that evil is such a blatant concept that offers nothing objective in a discussion like this. We all know that hurting others is evil but it doesnt resolve a single question of "how and why" when we talk about morals of cultures and values of norms through history. You are simply disregarding them as evil and that good sir is a fail in whatever historical analysis you try to particiapte in, because you have nothing to offer in the debate or in the analysis.
If we for example dont understand the theological meaning of the purgatory, then how could we ever explain why torture was so prominently used in medival Europe? Was it cause people were just more evil back then even if they knew it was wrong to kill and cause pain, or because they tried to be good by doing what was necessary for the person?

This is actually why history is such a vital subject in school, its not just to "know about the past" but to practice and train your subjective attitude towards understand and your critical thinking as a whole.
Because even today "evil" will always change, and when we dont try to understand each others, that concept will ultiamtely be smeared upon those who we cant relate to, or those who we disagree with, many times on terms that those other people themslves wont regard as ever being evil to begin with.
And this is how polarization erupts in modern day society in a changing political enviroment. Even harming others today in our own western society can be seen as justified, even when there were times in other historical cultures and norms when it wasnt.

As for soldiers in the 17th centuary killing civilians and POW, back in those days these people were regarded as combatant wether you like it or not. The concept of war was different and everyone who was on "that side", so it was hard for anyone to make any moral judgement between "killing a soldier is evil, because killing is evil" and you yourself would likely have not been any exception. Even in this debate you have shown yourself to be a follower of modern relevant attitudes without even a lick of relativism, so you already fit all the criteria to have been one of the men who likely would have opened fire first had you been there and then.

    A.... A....

@Fredrik Engström Take the strawman down a notch. It is impossible to argue with someone that makes things up. Also you completely missed/ignored my entire point, I don't know how it flew over your head but I am obviously not dealing with Einstein here. Evil is not subjective and never has been, there is a chemical reaction inside every healthy human whenever they see someone die and it is a very negative reaction, it is programmed into humans to recognize Evil for what it is, such as pedophilia which is the abuse of innocence from children, or rape which is violent sexual behavior. All healthy humans get a feeling of disgust and dismay whenever they see any such thing. Evil just like beauty is objective and not subjective unless mental illness is involved which rarely every happens to normal people. Stopp blabbering on about your post modernist/relativistic world view, it is cancerous and gives pedophiles and other filthy bastards a platform to normalize their insanities.

    A.... A....

The history is not clear on exactly what happened. DIfferent sources claim different things. It's clear that around 500 russians were killed, however some claim it was because of something the russians done to some town, one claim it was because they tried to pose as saxons, another claim that since the battle was still raging they could not leave 500 men unguarded. The last claim is the only one that has nothing to do with revenge and from a battle perspective leaving a large group behind like that would be fucking stupid. In general Cavalry were used by all armys to slaughter fleeing troops. So I don't give much for the moral arguments.

    A.... A....

This just goes to show that anyone who thinks Sabaton is one-sided needs to go talk to those Russian prisoner.

    Swedish version>English.

Seriously. The songs are more badass in swedish when translated to english. They must have had a shitty translator because if they would translate it as other fans have, they would have had a cool song.

    T.... G....

Compare some of the lyrics between the English and Swedish versions. They're deliberately different. Which personally, I think is fucking awesome.

    T.... G....

it's not translated from Swedish to English. Usually the Swedish song tells the story of the Swedish side, while the English tells the story of the enemies side.

    .... ....

they didn't fight Russians. The Russians almost immediately surrendered, and were slaughtered like cattle.

    .... ....

Dylan Salus They did indeed fight the russians. The pow’s were executed as a revenge for previous russian atrocities against swedes. I’m not saying it was a good thing to do but still....that was the reason. After Narva (1700) Karl released most of his russian prisoners where as Peter deported the bulk of the surrendering swedes to Siberia after Poltava (1709).

    J.... S....

Thats not the english version, or did you just "directly translate it, (real verion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Jg76Iyy8bM )

    J.... S....

@Ugglehjälm Nope, a literal translation is different again.
All the songs in Carolus Rex have lyrical differences between the English and Swedish versions.
1648 for example absolutely slams the Swedes in the Swedish version but in the English version it focuses more on the defenders.

    J.... S....

@Dylan Salus The translation of "syndaflod" would be "deluge", which is both a reference to the biblical flood myth and the Swedish invasion of Poland in the second northern war.

  39. F.... D....

This event was big news all across Europe, and also a major moral prestige loss for Sweden at the time, as everyone literate enough to follow international politics deemed it barbaric.

    F.... D....

    Illoney Interesting hmmm.

    F.... D....

    Illoney
Yeah one theory is that the russians had litteraly turned their coats inside out to blend in with the red Saxon uniforms so that the Swedes would not concentrate their assault on The less trained russians to break them quickly. As you said this was seen as a great dishonour and so because of this(and probably other reason aswell) the russians were excuted.

    F.... D....

It was an act of retaliation against russian atrocities in Ingria. Go figure.

    F.... D....

@Cattle Herder they only killed the russian prisoners....

    F.... D....

What is your source for this being "big news all across Europe"? The literature i've read talking either about this era or from this era pretty much universally says that Europe was too busy with the business of the Spanish war to bother about the Northern War.

See how the Russians give themselves, pray for mercy

    Caroleans take their vengeance,
    Honor is forgotten.

    K.... O....

The English version's lyrics are a bit more simple and show the Caroleans as heroic - the Swedish version plays up the fear they inspired, the cruelty they were capable of, and the dishonorable-ness of killing men who'd surrendered.

    K.... O....

Sorry about nitpicking, just feel like I should suggest some changes that are imo a more accurate translation.

Spilling Blood rather than Gushing blood since gjuter blod litteralily means to spill blood.
    .
See how Russians surrender, pray for mercy
The Swedes break the war's code
    Caroleans take their revenge
    Butcher their prisoners
See how the Russians surrender, pray for mercy
Mass murder, and not heroic deeds.
    Caroleans take their vengeance,
    (Their) honor is lost.

Would be my personal translation. Sorry for being a nitpicking grammar nazi :P

    K.... O....

@Arthion Cant put that in The version everyone understands

    K.... O....

domeday - doomsday would be more accurate than Judgement Day.
