Ryan Adams - Answering Bell Lyrics
Did I slip? I know I stumbled
Did I trip? 'Cause I know I fell
All's I know is I'll wake up here in my clothes tomorrow
But oh, girl I wish I knew you well
But oh, girl I wish I knew you well
Did I run? I thought I was walkin'
Through your inexhaustible gale
The names are changed but the constellations
Are still fallin'
Oh girl, if you could only tell
Oh girl, if you could only tell
But I'm just sayin' hi
Let your tears fall and touch my skin
I will collect them all for you in butterfly jars
And oh girl, I'll build your wishing well
Oh girl, I'll build your wishing well
But I'm just sayin' hi, to your answering bell
Did I sleep? 'Cause I musta been dreamin'
Did I weep? 'Cause I cried like hell
All's I want is your fortress of tears to crumble
And oh girl, I'd tear 'em down myself
And oh girl, the story's they could tell
But I'm just sayin' hi

Ryan Adams Answering Bell Comments
Organ solo got me everytime
I just looked this up... It's cool. It SO reminded me of "The Weight" by The Band. I think it has the same chord progression, or seems to. I can totally see the Van Morrison reference too. Cool stuff though. Kudos
I came for Adam
Loooove it
I think Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats song Wasting Time is oddly close to this great song. just saying

Friend of The Devil called and he wants his riff back.
ClueSign just a scale man
The expressions are funny.
If "The Band" had done this,.. need I say,.. anymore.
Very similar to van Morrison’s music
Bridesmaids! 💕
Total grestness poetry!
Aaahh memorries..
This song was played on MTV2 in 2002 by the end of high school. Gold is a great album. It features the song New York and this one. Ryan Adams has been a favorite. So where are your Ryan Adams friends? Any takers? No. They aren't on Facebook. Ryan Adams!
Enjoy prison
who put a dislike on this? what wrong with your ears? what crappy music do u listen too?
Bridesmaid brings me here ❤️
Ahhh, the non sober days. You look so much healthier now. My man.
I wonder why he says..." all's I know" Is that an expression from a certain part of the country ?
Van Morrison rip off.
I Love this song
Favorite video 😍
Adam Duritz! Elton John! I love this tune, sounds so much like Van Morrison. Beautiful poetry. Love Love Love
Digging this song, someone get me a cigarette!
Pass me the blunt homie 😂💯
Love boys with messy hair
love this, got it on cd single ! always make me smile , thanks Mr Adams
Love this song 💕💕💕💕💕
Bridesmaids is such a great movie (:
Such a babyface! <3
Adam Duritz ❤!
Whilst this era probably represents the peak of his powers - Adam Duritz, Elton John and all - Ryan is a national treasure who is still writing and releasing relevant and vital music to this day. A true American artist.
Although this is very good, it's far from Ryan Adams' best material IMO. His best period was with The Cardinals.
i love this reminds me of the best song writer ever mr ryan adams

I saw "the Wizard of Oz" last night and the scene with the poppy flowers reminded me of this music video
é o cara do country crows q tá junto ?
Sim!!!! Adam Duritz..o próprio..:)
a wild Elton John appears!
He and Elton are good friends
love this! reminds me of Bridesmaids.
Annie ✌💓
love annie :3
ummm, elton?
Elton called him when he was in England, out of he Blue, he did no know him, Elton got in touch and told him he loved his First ever Album as a soloist, HEARTBREAKER and he told him it inspired him to go back to his roots, which he did for Songs on the West Coast. (This Train don't Stop and I Want Love) , and of course Ryan was stunned, whoever told him Elton was on he Phone, he thought they were bull shitting of course. So him and Elton did a Cross Roads on CMT together, Country and Rock, but Ryan isn't really country, is is just everything.
It seems Elton loves to go into Stores and buy Albums of unheard of Groups/Soloists just to support them and to push them if they are good. And he loved Ryan, and we all see why...........Thats the scoop.
nice song (Y)
This song, and all of Gold, are so hard to listen to for me, because this is the album that helped me get through the passing of my grandma last year, so whenever I listen to that album, I instantly break into tears because of the nostalgia. Ugh.
Nick its good to have Cry. Crying or laughing is both feeling being moved its good.
like this one, I also write songs too, way down here in New Zealand:-)
Did you attend any of the concerts in 2015
its nice to theres someone else down here in this tiny corner of the world listening to Ryan
love it, but...why Elton John?
You never got your answer. Elton called this young kid out of the blue and told him he loved his Album Heartbreaker, at the time Ryan was not really bying that it was a call from Elton to England where he was performing, he was SHOCKED....So they got together later and did CMT show called Crossroads (Country/Rock) even though Ryans not really country has has done some Alt Country.
lots of Ryan's music is obviously country (more Country than the twang pop garbage they call "country" today), Whiskeytown was a very country band and this song is pretty Country with the banjo and steel guitar parts
I agree, he does Country but he does everything well, that was my point. I would say Jacksonville City Nights was a Country Album. So he does Country, Folk, Rock, Blues, fringe Jazz with Sylvia Plath. LOL
what is an answering bell?
@vai82 Your door bell.
Isn't that Adam Durits in the video?
@Michael Burke Ya and Elton John
+Michael Burke yeah that's Adam. Can't ypu hear him in the backing vocals?
This makes me happy
This is one the coolest videos I've seen in awhile
two greats minds on one song great song @CountingCrowsVEVO @RyanAdamsVEVO
My first guess was Van Morrison when I heard this. Very similar style. LOVE it.
totally agree - sounds very Van Morrison esque
Yeah - with a The Band - "The Weight" influence ~~ :)
dude! YES!
one of my fave songs to chill =)
Sounds eerily similar to PHOX's Slow Motion intro except sped up.
Good point. PHOX will have a hard time convincing people that they didn't lift that intro.
I started fangirling when I heard this song on Bridesmaids :D
me too!
I love "Gold" album but I didn't know about how many singles were off of this record. So this is number two and last. A fairy, lovely and "ryanesque" video! Elton John did a funny cameo! ;D
Yes, seems so. Which in hindsight is a bit strange (the number of singles I mean). Of course the singles market wasn't what it used to be by then.
This song Is really beautiful
Sounds very much like 'The Band - The Weight"
oh my god - i thought exactly the same
He's channeling Van Morrison if you ask me, but I can hear bits of the Band too (and of course, it ends in a country twang rather than Celtic strings!)
I was about to ask if this song is some kind of tribute to The Band
Wow..."Bridesmaids" was on in the house and I heard this...it's so fine! First I thought it was Van the Man, then I heard what sounded like the Band. Whatever it is, I LOVE it.
WTF Elton?!??
Love Ryan
Anyone else think the riff sounds almost exactly like 'The Weight' by The Band?
Yeah - I wrote the same thing in my reply before I saw yours ~~~ Guess you have to be a certain age to remember "The Weight" :)
Saw him several years ago Festival at Sandpoint. Total asshole. Large family concert and he was out of line. Sang only one good song. His band broke up after that concert. What a waste of talent!
Bridesmaids!
dear john
Bridesmaids brought me here haha
Adam Duritz looks outstanding in his field!
Dear John brought me here !
Bridesmaids
Ryan adams is one of the best and most prolific song writers of our time. The only reason is not better known is he dosn't sell out to all this pop crap. One of my top inspirations in my music.
love this. used have the cd....
Bridesmaid help me find this song again
Bridesmaids :)
*Blah blah brought me here*
Who gives a shit? The song is awesome; that is that.
old school took me to ryan's 'to be young'
and counting crows..adam duritz
I love this shit!
Owning this album eleven years ago brought me here.
Riff reminded me of The Joker - Steve Miller Band. Had to share in case anyone else is spending half an hour ripping their hair out trying to remember what song it reminds them of, just as I have been.
Elton!!!
Very Van Morrison like.
Cannibal brought me here
Who is the third guy playing with them, other than Ryan and Adam?
Ryan Adams and Jack White are two of the finest names in the music of the 2000s.
fuck off
kind of an ugly dude
Ryan Adams and Adam Duritz?! Does it get any better? I think not :)
Me too!
Is that David Rawlings doing the guitar?
Adam Duritz! I totally forgot he sang on this song!
lay off the carmex ryan...
what album???
The Weight
A little Weight-ish...
@jrobbierobertson Adams is a big fan Robbie! Duritz too!
I wish Ryan would do more songs in that style ... He should make an album with Adam ..
this sounds VERY similar to The Weight by The Band
@devilmadesmoke Ethan Johns maybe?
Elton John appears in the video because Adam's is a huge fan, and also there's the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" connection. Who is the third guy with Adams and Duritz? It is also rumored that Adams tried to get Bryan Adams to appear in the video. Great song, great video. Thanks.
two people can suck a fattie
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite songwriters.
