I grew up with the Rx Bandits, and in my youth, even today, sometimes it's bittersweet listening to some tracks. How these things can remind of you all the things that we wish we could undo...along with inspiring me to pursue music as a passion, it also got me into production, and doing commercial work in addition to playing with an orchestra and also as Principal Trumpet of the Mass. Wind Symphony (Now the Boston Metropolitan Wind Symphony), my knowledge of the complexities of the most subtle things is what makes this song, and so much of their work sometimes provide hope for me in the existence of the divine, or something greater than ourselves. While it may be easily interpreted as being about heroin, can anyone honestly say there there hasn't been something, someone, or somewhere, be it drugs, sex, alcohol, and, worser, the things so dark and deep that a testament to how fragile we are--and how beautiful things can be...the love in understanding that there are some things and aspects of the human experience with intimacy that defies the written word, oil on canvas, and cinema. For things like this, we have music. As a composer, what's most brilliant about this song, and equally haunting, is the true mark of a musician and band that takes a driven, immaculately percussive song, and truly expose the vulnerability in his mind, heart, and most prominently, the delicately heartbreaking realization in that drop to a whisper and single strung-guitar countermelody. But, as many of us know, that pain he provides a glimpse of is but only for an instant, and it's once more to the lake...
