Russell, Leon - Gone To Shiloh Lyrics
Luther left at first light Friday morning
Little Dan and Becky wave good-bye
They're gonna have to share the wait together
Idle hands will see a good fire slowly die.
Shoulder to shoulder, side by side
Gone to Shiloh, hope springs eternal
When flags and bullets start to fly
April's come and the air smells fresh with rain
They watched his shadow fade around the bend
He's headed for a different kind of thunder
And the stunned surprise in the eyes of dying men
Gone to Shiloh for the Union
Gone to Shiloh, time passes slowly
When flags and bullets start to fly
The old black rooster sang in death down that dirt road
His steps in bold, his man of fancy free
I pray we see him alive and well in the forehead
In that Godforsaken place in Tennessee
Gone to Shiloh for the Union
Shoulder to shoulder, side by side
Gone to Shiloh, men stand united
When flags and bullets start to fly
After all this, if we should prevail
Heaven help the South
When Sherman comes their way

Russell, Leon Gone To Shiloh Comments
LEON RUSSELL...the best. Almost saw him 3 years ago, had tickets for a concert 4 weeks away when he died. I can barely drive past the Canyon Club without crying! Love you, Leon...
Not many songs have been written so the civil war
Reminiscent of The Band.
Hauntingly beautiful melody ❤️
Certainly times and life kept this collaboration until, the weariness and heartbreaking shame of humanity brought this very mature group of artists together for us in a thankful effort. Thank you for posting.

Oh, brother, DO WE...
RIP Leon Russell
So many people in this country have no idea of how terrible a conflict the Civil War was. There were more men killed in those four years than all of the other wars this country has fought in, before or after, COMBINED. No family in either North or South was unscathed by this conflict.
sounds like the death nell of a of an old battery! no matter who you are when your times up it's up!
one of the best duet album.ever.

lyrics perfect
Can't get much better than Leon, Elton, and Neil Young coming together with Bernie Taupin's poignant lyrics...Outstanding!!! Thanks for the post
yes incredible songwriting
This is one of their best works. I love it.
Flags and bullets will start to fly, Again at some point.
This song made my hair stand up on end--and I immediately rushed to amazon.com and ordered the CD and the download. In a Rolling Stone interview, Elton said this is one of the finest songs he has ever written. I agree.
My friends are always singing this song too SpyChicken01
My friends are always singing this song. It's hilarious when they do.
Totally heart wrenching for me, a huge fan of all those folks and deeply haunted by the American Civil War for many years now. To have all this come together, expressed through wonderful American, British, and Canadian perspectives is a perfect union. What a trinity with Neil certainly being the ghost.
Heard this song on a collage radio station the other night.....fucking Amazing
@77edster Respectfully disagree... simply haunting and gorgeous... every note.
I've played this into the ground since downloading from ITunes. It is a remarkable combination of musicianship and voices.

Love The Union! Love every song!!!
greatest song
"Hope Springs Eternal when Flags and Bullets Start To Fly...." Brilliance!
This lyric made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I heard it the first time.
@1953jazzman One of my 4 favourite Elton albums, along with Tumbleweed Connection, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic. It really is tremendous. And #3 in the US charts.
I can respect why people like it, but i was always more into Elton's rock/pop stuff so this really doesn't do much for me.
I just heard this album for the first time today! I am literally flabbergasted by how brilliant this is -- it has to be in the top five duo albums in Rock, period! God bless em' both, this is the finest work from Elton in over 30 years! This ranks as an equal in quality to his first four albums, which I always felt were his best work -- and Leon hasn't sounded this good since the early 70's as well! Even Bernie Taupin proves he is still Elton's best lyric writer.
What a great song!!! I love the chemistry of these two fine voices!
A classic album
