Rush - The Anarchist Lyrics

Will there be world enough and time for me to sing that song?
A voice so silent for so long
For all the years I had to get along, they told me I was wrong
I never wanted to belong - I was so strong

(I lack their smiles and their diamonds;
I lack their happiness and love
I envy them for all those things,
I never got my fair share of, my fair share of)

The lenses inside of me that paint the world black
The pools of poison, the scarlet mist, that spill over into rage
The things I've always been denied
An early promise that somehow died
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage

In all your science of the mind, seeking blind through flesh and bone
Find the blood inside this stone
Well, I know I've never shown what I feel, I've always known
I plan my vengeance on my own - and I was always alone

(I lack their smiles and their diamonds;
I lack their happiness and love
I envy them for all those things,
I never got my fair share of, my fair share of)

The lenses inside of me that paint the world black
The pools of poison, the scarlet mist, that spill over into rage
The things I've always been denied
An early promise that somehow died
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage

Oh - They tried to get me
Oh - They'll never forget me

The lenses inside of me that paint the world black
The pools of poison, the scarlet mist, that spill over into rage
The things I've always been denied
An early promise that somehow died
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage
A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage

  7. s.... ....

I’m 2 years old and I’ve been into this band since I was in banana before my dad ate it to produce sperms to invade my mothers eggs to create me to become 2 years old to enjoy this band.

  8. V.... P....

Very hypnotizing snare. Love it 💖

  9. D.... C....

    A MASTERPIECE!!!

  10. S.... M....

Reading the Clockwork Angels book made this album much more enjoyable! I love the book and I bet you will too!

  11. C.... T....

I'm sad that Rush never got to Easter Island.

    E.... B....

Elmo Blatch But Neil said “ island a plane” everytime i fly

  14. b.... J....

Is this anyone else’s favorite track

  15. U.... M....

    My fav part is 0:01 - 6:53

  16. A.... V....

Clockwork Angels is absolutely the best album since Counterparts.

  17. K.... D....

You know, I poo pooed this album when it first came out. Perhaps I need to rethink that decision. And I have a Brazilian duo called Fleesh who covered The Garden to thank for it.

  18. S.... K....

One of Geddy's greatest bass lines! Rush... This just blows me away. So fucking awesome....the structure is brilliant. Not to mention the performances. Masters of the music universe.

  19. V.... ....

Amazing lyrics! Come on Neil, write some more songs!!!!!

  20. L.... L....

You know how each new album required a few times around the turntable before you "got it" and that became your new favorite? That JUST happened with Clockwork Angels. I haven't been able to listen to music on a regular basis for a while, but I really disliked this when it came out and put it away and thought I'd never get it. Surprise, surprise! Thanks for putting this up, Skruffy <3

  21. G.... M....

What do you suppose he lacks?

  22. J.... G....

The time on the clock is 21:12

    J.... G....

    9:12 , also Neil's bday lol

  23. m.... ....

The Anarchist & Headlong Flight are the two highlights of this album for me....and the Garden.

  24. I.... h....

The 26 people who dislike this have no taste in music.

    I.... h....

MB: Or maybe just different than yours--29 of them now!

  25. A.... S....

I love the snare work by Peart on this whole album . . .
    so much different

  26. h.... 4....

"Oh...they tried to get me, oh...they'll never forget me...". Sounds like a final message from Neil to everyone and everything that ever tried to take him down.

    h.... 4....

??  Nobody ever tried to do to him anything you suggested.

  27. Z.... ....

Listen carefully around 0:28 and you hear a voice whisper "What do you lack?", a question called out by a merchant hawking his wares, as alluded to in the liner notes, which the Anarchist answers a few verses in.

    Z.... ....

There is that whisper in the final seconds of Clockwork Angels also.

  28. S.... M....

its a good song- definitely a keeper Imo

  29. A.... J....

this new rush is just weak.

    A.... J....

Compared to what?.. This is as good as anything else they ever wrote. They couldn't have done this in the seventies or eighties.

  30. T.... S....

Is it me or have Alex's solos kept getting shorter and shorter?

    T.... S....

Rush is cyclical; he barely did solos at all in the mid 80s, with Power Windows and Hold Your Fire. But it didn't matter; Alex taking a backseat on the albums allowed the rhythm section to thrive, which has always been the driving force of Rush, IMHO.

  31. J.... S....

    An overwhelming awesome, superheavy song....

  32. m.... ....

Always loved this song but R40 made it my one of my all time favorite Rush songs... Perfect opener.

  33. c.... p....

anarchist is one of my fav Rush songs....i always thought that had way more kick than the opening song...that they opened their fab last concert series confirmed that to me

  34. T.... ....

Man, I love that bass line during the chorus. Hopefully they bring it to the front of the mix on the R40 DVD, as you can't really hear it in the fan-filmed videos on YouTube.

    T.... ....

+TheClockworkAngel he just scoops too much mids on his jazz bass! They're already scooped enough as it is with that kind of bass!

  35. T.... C....

    best 100%

  36. A.... N....

hour 9, minute...12 or 11? yes, you know what I mean...

  37. A.... N....

hour 9, minute...12 or 11? yes, you know what I mean...

    A.... N....

    +An-Ta Ni it's 21:12

    A.... N....

I feel so stupid for only noticing that now...

  38. M.... R....

The guitar solo is so mystical

  39. L.... T....

    dfsgzdh

  40. P.... C....

    jacobs ladder PLEASE!!!!

  41. T.... ....

What other band gives you 1:25 before uttering a word?

    T.... ....

Here's one: No Way Back Up (feat. Illuminor) by Nigel Good has 2 and a half minutes of "world building" before the lyrics start.

    T.... ....

thats a good one too Ryan!

    T.... ....

Black Sabbath does, even more than 1:25 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    T.... ....

Pink Floyd and Deep Purple also come to mind.

    T.... ....

Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Echoes by Pink Floyd.

  42. M.... B....

on may 14th I was in st. louis for rush this was the first song that played. In the set behind them they moved the speakers and they went back in time until the trons behind them showed a high school gym. It was one of the best nights of my life as a fan of music.

    M.... B....

+The Flaming Taco I was there. Great show!

    M.... B....

+Brian Lester I was there as well. I also traveled from O town to see them on CA tour at the ampitheatre as well in 2012. Didn't get to see them in Orlando in 13 though.

    M.... B....

+mychel davis I've been lucky. After an almost 20 year hiatus, I got to see TM 2x (one was CLE), CA 2x, & R40 2x.

    M.... B....

I was at the R40 show in Buffalo. Hands down the best stage show I've ever seen for a band.

    M.... B....

    I was there.

  43. C.... ....

A missing part of me that grows around me like a cage.

    C.... ....

One of Neil's best lyrics ever!

  44. r.... c....

Does anyone else hear the poor editing of two different vocal takes around 5:56? Love the song but I can't unhear that.

    r.... c....

@BearzUnlimited I honestly don't hear what you're referencing. But I don't have the greatest ear for these things. It sounds normal to me.

    r.... c....

@BearzUnlimited lol that great a little human error in our digital world...love that catch Bearz ....

    r.... c....

+BearzUnlimited i heard that and i know what you mean by great song but cant unhear that

  45. T.... R....

Best Progressive rock-band ever... the chanced me from listening to bee gees when I was 16 and opened up a whole new world....three guys, three friends, inspirational to me.. and now i may be going to their farewell concert this year.. i only hope they put out some more music or their will be a physically felt hole in my life...Every once in awhile you have a band you just know was made for you buy God....

  46. n.... ....

the 2nd song in the opening r40 setlist so crazy they are going new to old I can see this mind games its so awesome they threw every one off on this tour

  47. N.... P....

Absolutely love this song. One of my favorite Rush songs, actually. The way Neil Peart plays the chorus on his toms like that makes the song very catchy.

    N.... P....

wow took you only 40 years to pick up on that nuance, eh?

    N.... P....

+Back from the Edge I could just bang my head to this song for hours.

    N.... P....

    amazing drum work !!

  48. h.... ....

    measu tim e~

  49. K.... ....

Clockwork Angels is their best album in years (and the other ones were good).  A couple of those symbols (the ones at 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock) look like ones from the Mage: the Ascension RPG.

    K.... ....

They are astrological/alchemical symbols. Mage: the Ascension used real esoteric symbology, those guys did their homework real good.

    K.... ....

@Pau Babau "those guys did their homework real good." They always do.

  50. J.... Z....

this is one of the greatest songs of the album

  51. P.... I....

    Geddy is a living legend!!!!!

    P.... I....

    He"s the reason I got a bass

  52. f.... ....

amazing bass melodies from Geddy.  I like Neil's drum roll too, simple at first, but awesome! This rocks on!

  53. A.... H....

    What a GOOD song !!!  =)

  54. M.... ....

Definitely has a sort of Grace Under Pressure meets Test For Echo vibe.

  55. T.... ....

Oh they tried to get me, Oh they'll never forget me....

  56. R.... ....

Should someone drive a stainless steel into my kidney ....

  57. A.... P....

This always goes back to being my all time favorite song

  58. B.... p....

One of the best piece of Rush. I have them all since Fly by Night.
I especially liked the recording studio Hemispheres, 2112, Snakes and Arrows and Power Windows.
One of the best bands I've seen live. Love from France. + +

  59. B.... R....

I had to go and listen to this on the home system; promptly shitting myself from excitement. Well not really, but damn this song is cool.

  60. S.... R....

Love this song! One if my favs from the album.

  61. M.... O....

no one sux a bigger dong than rush

    M.... O....

your just sad that no other American bands are better than rush sure queensryche is up there but rush will never be surpassed

  62. E.... O....

I am 17, and I have my dad to thank for, for introducing me to this band. As soon as I could appreciate music, I took instant note of how awesome I felt listening to Rush. My first concert was in 2004 in Manchester on their R30 tour, I saw them twice on their Snakes and Arrows tour Newcastle and Manchester, next was Time Machine whereupon I saw them in Newcastle and Glasgow and then for Clockwork Angels I saw them in Glasgow (as they didn't tour Newcastle). I utterly love this band and this is one of my favourite tracks of Clockwork Angels.

    E.... O....

You're so lucky. I became a fan of them in late 2015 and they quickly became my favorite band of all time but unfortunately I was too late to get to see them live. I will always regret it.

    E.... O....

I'm 13 and I've been a fan for a long while actually. I was introduced to them when I was 2 I think and then I forgot about them years later. I rediscovered them about a year ago. I'm so sad I never saw them on tour :(

    E.... O....

You lucky bastard. Im in Australia and been into RUSH for 30 years and they’ve never come here.

    E.... O....

    The best

    E.... O....

    The best you'll ever hear

  63. F.... ....

The beginning drum intro seems like something that Dick Dale would put in an album!

  64. X.... ....

    I wholeheartedly sympathize with you.

  65. X.... ....

    fucking shit

  66. T.... ....

Seen them in 76 and thought they were great. Saw them again in 2003, on the Vapor Trails Tour. They were a zillion times better than 76. One of the few R&R bands around that just keeps improving thru time. RUSH FOREVER!!!!

  67. D.... T....

I was raised on rush, its part of life for me

  68. B.... P....

and on the 8th day GOD created RUSH. This is no band better than RUSH. Never has been and never will be. Enough said!. You could think other bands like Yes, and Zepplin, and whoever are better but you would be wrong.

  69. T.... E....

Dude, like... this song is fucking good...

  70. J.... M....

Who what at the last show of this tour? I was!

  71. W.... F....

i am probably even a bigger rush fan than you, i have been listening to the band for thirty five years and have not missed a tour in atlanta since signals in 1982-3, mypoint is there will always be the bigger fish and those who like them with varying degrees, i love the miuntemen, yes, hendrix, dead etc... but in varying degrees, but for you to insullt them or attack them for it totally uncalled for, and Rush would tell you you are unprofessional, dont become a menace!

  72. W.... F....

then you are only a medium rush fan and not a die hard! i love their passion for their instruments and musically they have no fillers, they are by far the hardest working rock group in business!

  73. W.... F....

those who complain will always complain! Rush rocks!

  74. W.... F....

This album rocks, i have been listening to it for the last week getting used to the instruments, but gotta tell you it has flashes of 2112 in some of their jams, especially caravan when they start jamming and the guitar solo part, but this song is by far one of the best on this! i feel like they are back in their 20s again! Rush Rules! now lets get YES into RRHOF as well, they are long over due as well "Mr Christopher Squire...."

  75. B.... O....

Rush is and will always be my favorite band.

  76. 9.... ....

Saw this tour in Denver last night, very cool.

  77. J.... L....

NEW WORLD MAN was actually technically filler material because some fans in the past were complaining about being shortchanged by near EPs or shorter than average LPs. Well, you hear how RUSH rose to the occasion with this last minute edition. Ironically, it became the first release. Expect RUSH to be the ones who can pull off a Sweet Miracle like that.

  78. D.... ....

    Are you really that stupid?
o·pin·ion - /əˈpinyən/ - Noun: A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

''You are a penis'' Wow.. Very mature!

  79. S.... S....

As in..he is a fucking idiot for saying Rush writes 'filler' songs....who do you think they are?? Kiss???

  80. S.... S....

    Yep...he is:P

  81. S.... S....

Roses be red, they grow in the ground..so..shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down!!! Filler???? Filler material???????? Go away!!!!

  82. B.... ....

I snapped a string on my bass playing this song :/

  83. R.... V....

punk doesn't require a lot of skills. I recognize Rush totally smashes Punk Rock bands, but Rap and Pop music are the real problem nowadays

  84. S.... ....

You're a fucking idiot. I'd prefer you stay off of my channel if that's the way you feel. They don't release "filler material" they perfect each fucking song before it is released. Learn the facts before you go off and start spouting

  85. L.... ....

I love Rush so very much...but I can't deny that they have put out a LOT of filler material. I tend to stick to 20 or 25 songs of theirs and listen to them over and over. But hey, 25 truly great songs is about 20 more than most bands ever manage to write.

  86. L.... T....

Not every Rush song is amazing *cough*dogyears*cough*ithinkimgoingbald*cough*

And YYZ... Their best song? I don't know about that. It's definitely amazing, but all the songs I mentioned above I like more than YYZ.

  87. R.... B....

all of those songs are great, every single Rush song is amazing. (except for their first album, the only exception from their first album is Working Man). but the one Rush songs that beats every single song, is YYZ

  88. N.... B....

True. Iron Maiden, Rush and Alice Cooper are all incredibly good for their age.

  89. B.... ....

Just tried to play this on the drums and totally spaced out on what the bridge was. That's why I'm here.

  90. L.... T....

Lets count off the great songs...
By-tor and the Snow Dog, Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, Jacob's Ladder, The Camera Eye, Subdivisions, Between the Wheels, Mystic Rhythms, Lock and Key, The Pass, Bravado, Cut to the Chase, Driven, Secret Touch, The Main Monkey Business, and Clockwork Angels (the song).

Enjoy! That was one off of every album except the first

  91. T.... J....

In my opinion, Cygnus X-I (Book 1 and 2), Subdivisions and Freewill are their best songs, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a bad song.

  92. T.... J....

I don't know, Iron Maiden seems to deliver pretty good.

  93. R.... ....

"...a missing part of me that grows around me like a cage..."

  94. R.... D....

Tom saywer roll the bones driven Pretty much Ever song the wrote. Good starter is moving pictures the snakes and arrows. Then branch out to switching stages.

  95. C.... R....

    try rushradio (dot) org

  96. W.... C....

The Pass, Limelight, The Garden, Entre Nous, Spirit Of The Radio, Xanadu, Halo Effect, Far Cry, Dreamline...

  97. T.... ....

This song is fucking awesome. Probably one of my favourite rush songs ever.
