Rush - Subdivisions Lyrics

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

[Chorus:]
(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

[Chorus]

The Lord above is calling his warriors home. I am glad i found this group in the early 80's and still listen to them some 40 years later today. Neil was a special gift to all of us to enjoy such unbelievable grace and talent. They will never have another one like him. Today all i did was listen to rush. From 4:15 -4:45 i just keep playing it over and over. May Neil's soul rest in peace.

Over the past few years I’ve seen quite a few musicians who I grew up listening to pass away; so many inspiring, intelligent, and very TALENTED musicians! Neil Peart is one of those. I grew up listening to Rush. Every time I listen to this song in particular I get an intense rush come over me. Maybe because the lyrics speak volumes as to my childhood and growing up in the best decade ever. The 80’s rocked and I will never forget the good times I had. Neil will live on in us every time we play a Rush tune. RIP Neil! You were one of the best and I thank you for giving me an outlet during those tough teenage years when I felt lost...an outcast at times. Thank you 🙏🏼

  27. T.... P....

This is my top 10 drum song.
Subdivisions drums improvisation Topmostpop video (Buckethead) watch link below:
Just something 2put on y'alls radar. Fingers vastly superior then entire arms. I guess bcuz u have 10 vs only 2 with such minimal motion i actually doing a lot more here then this video can possibly capture. Slowing it down prolly won't help.

I always wanted a little drum kit I could play on my lap. But that's basically what i just do with guitar anyway. (Example watch my intro Buckethead Gahm Untitled.)
And with guitar I can do bass, keyboards &vocals i.e. I can bend notes.
Drums need a pitch tempo foot pedal. Y'know so's u can bend notes. Just ask th humans voice. (M)>akes all thdiff.
I promised a friend I would do this video. Later that day Neil Peart died.

“Any escape might help to smoothe the unattractive truth, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth.” Shear Poetry. As i reflect I'm feeling a bit older today. My youth lived with Rush starting with 2112. Boy, did we play that album countess times. The shows at the Nassau Coliseum were mandatory to see. Coming to school with a concert shirt was required to show off. Talking about the line up and what encore song was played was the conversation all day. We could talk about the loss of Neil, the band and the music, but the impact is much greater. When your life has been formed by the influence and the shear energy these three human individuals provided, you felt so good to be a part of this movement called RUSH. Now we must continue to keep the spirit (of radio) alive and Rock on with RUSH !! TURN IT UP!!

  32. P.... F....

Just the best Rush song ever. Classic Canadian rock brilliance!

  61. l.... g....

i'd listened to rush since i was a kid (tom sawyer, fly by night, etc) thanks to my parents but it wasn't until adolescence when i heard this song that i became a lifelong fan. there is NO band like them and i'm sad that neil is gone. there was always a part of me that thought he was less than a god but more than a man.

  62. J.... M....

RIP Neil, you were the greatest. Just listen to what your peers have to say about you.....absolute respect and gratitude for you as a musician and as a person. Keep rocking above with John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, and Jeff Porcaro.

  63. M.... A....

Best drummer to ever walk the earth.. such a huge inspiration in my life. Rest easy Neil..

  64. I.... o....

"Rush" were a true rarity. An ironically successful mouth piece for the nerdy outcasts of this world. No, I'm not talking about these current and over abundant allergy stricken and structurally weakened millenial beta experiment nerds. They are a dime a dozen and everywhere.

I'm talking about a group of misfortunate social miscreants who were forever cursed with an unwavering affinity for "outside of the box" mentality and a lack of understanding in the sense behind blind conformity.

I've personally always identified with this song.

RIP to the heroic three who stood for such an under appreciated minority.

("I've walked among you and I've watched you all...
And through acceptance I denied my own desire to watch you fall...." ~ Iniquity of Symmetry - Reborn)
