Rush - Middletown Dreams Lyrics
The office door closed early
The hidden bottle came out
The salesman turned to close the blinds
A little slow now, a little stout
But he's still heading down those tracks
Another day as drab as today
Is more than a man can endure
Dreams flow across the heartland
Feeding on the fires
Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you're down
Dreams transport the ones
Who need to get out of town
Out of town
The boy walks with his best friend
Through the fields of early May
They walk awhile in silence
One close, one far away
But he'd be climbing on that bus
Just him and his guitar
To blaze across the heavens
Like a brilliant shooting star
The middle aged Madonna
Calls her neighbor on the phone
Day by day the seasons pass
And leave her life alone
But she'll go walking out that door
On some bright afternoon
To go and paint big cities
From a lonely attic room
Dreams flow across the heartland
Feeding on the fires
Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you're down
Dreams transport the ones
Who need to get out of town
Out of town
It's understood
By every single person
Who'd be elsewhere if they could
So far so good
And life's not unpleasant
In their little neighborhood
Dreams flow across the heartland
Feeding on the fires
Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you're down
Dreams transport the ones
Who need to get out of town
Out of town
Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you're down
Dreams transport the ones
Who need to get out of town
They live in...
They dream in Middletown
They dream in Middletown

Rush Middletown Dreams Comments
THIS song reminds me of a friend. Not together anymore.
even rush writes boring songs...
One of the best songs ever written. 11/10.
Wore this cassette out in 1986. Loved POWER WINDOWS. Got my Koss Portable Cassette Player and jammed on this everyday for an extended period of time with cool folding headphones that fit in a small bag. The bag is still around.
Rush: the band of my dreams. Simply perfect.
Intro sounds like the terminator
Sounds like the office door but if you listen closely i think it.s the Offer store ??
" DAY BY DAY THE SEASONS PASS" GREAT LINE
Wow, in the TV, there's an image from "the Big Money" video.
This is basically subdivisions pt. 2
That's right; and it's even that much better. It's also related to "Losing It", from Signals.
Absolutely love this album!!
The sound of that Wal bass just slays me everytime I hear this song.
day by day the seasons pass and leave her life alone .......
But she ll go walking out that door on some bright afternoon to go and paint big cities from a lonely attic room
That bass tone could bring world peace.

New Wave meet The Shooting Star from 1970 s Bad Company Power
Track with A Dose of Extra
Keyboard s !
What a PoS song from such a great band. Is poppy and has aged badly from the times.
I highly beg to differ, friend.
Fuckin A
Rush has a way of hitting you right where you live. They don't get any better than that!!!
15 people have no dreams.
... 26 , sad dim-witted people ....
I just moved to NYC I don't know if thats the type of Middletown Dreams they sing about but I'm grinding at a day job to make my real dreams come true!
Nadie ha logrado hacer algo igual , ni se le han acercado !!!!
RUSH FOREVER IN MY MIND !!!!
everything about this song is pure perfection! Rush is just the greatest band that ever existed !
Agree they are a great band - but not because of the shit after MP.
I know l know
Damn i miss those guys
GREG beyond words how much I miss them my Brother
Beyond Words did l mention that
@Scott Bridgeforth Would love Neil touring by the Lake Saimaa like I've always recommended him and Brutus ans Michael & friends to do ; )
If you’re a guitar player like me,you’ll really appreciate the volume swells on the outro of this song Alex!🙌 only Lifeson could pull this off
I'm not a guitar player but I do have a guitar, a couple of pedals, and a small amp. I bang on the shit, it's fun. So no, I can't appreciate what the fuck he's doing, but I do someday hope to be able to reproduce that razor-sounding rhythm. It starts at 1:33, the lyrics, Boy walks with...
If I can eventually piece that out and get the right effects, I'm gonna get one of them wireless rigs and walk down the street trying to bust open shop windows, cut right through them. But I won't do it halfassed. So I'll probably never do it but I never had a dream and this seems like a workable substitute, if you follow.
And all kinds of other Lerxt magic. No one sounds like him. Or any of them.
Also, I think, if I'm not mistaken about "outro," the last notes of Different Strings are the sickest sounds ever pulled from the strings of a guitar.
This song has saved my life and soul so many times.Thank You Alex,Geddy, and Neil.
Great bass, vocals, drums, keyboards and guitars....brilliant song, sublime.
Quando comprei este disco há mais de 30 anos atrás em vinil, só o conseguia escutar em altíssimo volume, todos os instrumentos estavam em destaque e bem distribuídos entre todas as músicas
The arrangement lyrics & how this track comes across is truly awesome. My fave rush track off there. Best album to date. They got it so right then.
In NO way is this better than Hemispheres or Permanent Waves or MP.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!
Renato Santos Me too.
Damn I love those volume swells at the end from Alex
This song reminds me of my dad.
We both share a love of rush. And this song is a huge part of our relationship. he and I listen to this song when life gets too much. I absolutely love rush and I love the memories me and my old man created listening to this song.
(Edit)
Me and my dad can have our days and no matter what this song has a way of reminding us that we need to put petty stuff behind. Part of the reason this song is so great is it reminds me that my dads got my back 100% and it reminds him we got bigger problems to worry about than what car goes where or what dishes got done. It reminds us not to dream in middletown and shoot for the stars. Cause it wont be ok. You dont work hard to get to ok. You should work hard to make everything better all the time. So to anyone reading this just remember. it'll all be awesome just wait.
@Josep Duran I'm so sorry to hear about that. Just keep up hope and dont stop fighting. Thats what I'd do.
Everything will turn out awesome in the end. You just gotta get out of middletown.
@The Wraith Thanks man all the best to you and your dad!
This song also reminds me of my dad. He passed away last year. Man, cherish your dad while you still have him.
Disrespectful, he is your father or Dad not old man
Dreams transport desires
Drive you when you're down...
How does this video only have 41 likes? I am very highly disappointed.
Can't please everyone
Simply put: Not everyone knows this masterpiece.
The world never appreciated truth and beauty. Its the curse of human nature
Because this was only posted a year ago and there are several other versions on youtube.
This song is a classic Rush song from their "MIDI period" (1983-1992 or so).
Is there a live version out there that's relatively "live studio" quality (at least A Show of Hands) and from the 1980s? Listening to the live version of this song on "A Clockwork Angels" made me sad because Geddy didn't have the vocal chops to quite pull this off anymore, making this version the best one out there.
https://youtu.be/jvAfVeb6ZfQ Don't know if you found it but here's one I love. Not the greatest video quality but still good
Ha, Geddy did the high note at the beggining in CA live. Lol
Rush INVENTED midi
I kinda start it at Permanent Waves, run through Presto.
Power windows my favorite cd. Every song good.
Mr too.
Isn't rush the best band ever with only 3 people it sounds like 16 people its crazy to think about🤯🤯🤯🤯
Rush is part of the glue that has kept me and my buddies together since I was 13 years old - I'm 54 now :) Unbelievable band.
With Geddy playing 12 of the instruments simultaneously 😮
You need to check,Triumph. Another three man band. Awesome.
