Rush - Marathon Lyrics
It's not how fast you can go
The force goes into the flow
If you pick up the beat
You can forget about the heat
More than just survival
More than just a dotted line
More than just a dash
It's a test of ultimate will
The heartbreak climb uphill
Got to pick up the pace
If you want to stay in the race
More than blind ambition
More than simple greed
More than a finish line
In the long run...
[Chorus:]
From first to last
The peak is never passed
Something always fires the light that gets in your eyes
One moment's high, and glory rolls on by
Like a streak of lightning
That flashes and fades in the summer sky
Your meters may overload
You can rest at the side of the road
You can miss a stride
But nobody gets a free ride
More than high performance
More than just a spark
More than just the bottom line
Or a lucky shot in the dark
In the long run...
[Chorus]
You can do a lot in a lifetime
If you don't burn out too fast
You can make the most of the distance
First you need endurance
First you've got to last...
[Chorus]

That Michael Anthony hall ?
My first Rush album(s) was the Retrospective Double Greatest Hit album. And this song was on it and those keyboard chords used during the chorus are amazing. I jammed this song a lot on my old SRS Surround Sound system from the late 90s.
Nobody commented on the fucking killer bass line.....😀
No need, it's Geddy. :)
This changed changed me forever, for the inspiration it gave me. It is an underrated 'dream like' song ❤️
RUSH ON FOREVER. Chicago
This song will always be one of my favorites
a triumph!
5:11 Dear god, that key change in the final chorus! Every hair on my body stands up, still to this day. MAJESTIC!
Too Cool! ...you can a do a Life T ime .....
Man sometimes I wish I was Alex lifeson
Um somzão incomparável. Rush forever. Rush in Rio forever.🇧🇷
2019 : ( "neil doesn't even play drums anymore, that part of our life is over" geddy
only band in the world that can make music reverberate real life and beyond
I was in junior high, love this album!
Its 1985 and the "magic" is all about this album, and I mean magic. No decade has every had such a rich history of bands (not Devo or The b-52s or Flock Of Seaguls but the best bands of the 80s) like Rush. It was all around, flying across the airwaves and representing not just the music but the lifestyle created by such magic.
Learn something.."kids"...this ain't no..justin beiber..BULLSHIT....THIS. IS CALLED MUSIC...!!!
The golden voice
The golden voice geddy
Show!!!
I saw this concert in 1986 at Madison Square Garden. Those were great days. I was just 20 years ago.
the tune at the beginning sounds a bit like "The Big Money".
i like the 80's Rush
Fantastic. When i was a kid id a bad accident. I was hospitalized for 3 months and all i had was a stereo walkman and a copy of Power Windows on cassette. I also had a copy of the script to Monty Python and the holy grail which i read through every day. It also had the scripts to scenes that never made the movie. One i remember was of a group of priests robbing a bank with God as a nervous getaway driver beaming light from the drivers seat whilst mumbling " I'm used to automatics." Made he laugh every time. But the Power Windows tape really helped and i played it most of the day, every day. And this song inspired me to get better.
FireWalkWithMe25 damn bro what happened
@jasper426 sports accident. Lost an eye.
FireWalkWithMe25 Jesus, glad ur ok
@jasper426 fine now. Happened in '89.
The bass is fucking insane
Neil rules on the drums
The media said the stone are # 1 I still think Rush rules over the Stones
izzy lee The Rolling Stones are trash, not even comparable to 1/100th of rush
Favourite rush song ever
This song is MAGIC not human....rush magic
i wake up to this song , (in the long run)
Laser rush show griffith observatory
This one. This is the song I want played at my funeral.
The bass line playing on a surround sound system! Oh my! 🎶
Power ~ ~ ~ ~ Windows
Love this entire album. I want the 80's back.
This was the first tour on which I saw Rush live in concert (1986). I always liked this album, but I have to say the show was...underwhelming...the laser effects for this song and others were cheesy, plain and simple. The funniest part was, they relocated the drum solo in 'YYZ' to where it wasn't expected - the audience expected the thrill of the "Exit Stage Left" arrangement of that song - and everyone stopped cheering as if to say WTF? Later tours were a big, big improvement, though, the stuff of legends.
stop cryin you dick. no rush is underwhelmed, they was fuckin it up on every tour, they was bad
Perfect 50th birthday song. (not quite ready for "Losing It") : )
Time Stand Still for me...
My favourite Rush song....thx!
The bass line is the best part of the song !!!!!!
I remember I used to drive through Calgary at midnight to this song when the streets are almost empty but the city lights are nice and calming
Damn I miss life back in Canada
Where did you end up going?
Wow, what a visual combined with this amazing song. That's when you know a song is not good but great, when you can recall where, when, how, why, etc. its something very special, a memory for life.
i used listen to this on casset on my walhman delivering the Toronto sun I worked at a pizza take out place till 2 stay up all night delvery my papers roll a joint puit on power windows eveyone got thier paper and I had enjoed evey moment of it lol
They "faded out" the ending which to me was one of the best parts.
GREAT !
I discovered a way to TM to rush when i was in highscool, i love power windows, 2112, fly by night, and about every single song on every album. Presto was my most favorite album of all... Still is! I burned through 3 cassettes, and went through 3 CDs, of presto. Of all the groups and bands that there was, is, and will be - RUSH WILL ALWAYS BE MY #1!!!
Cade os BR???
Opa, por aqui tbm
I used to stare at the album cover on my cassette thinking- is he looking out the window, or at you.. or both
bitch he not lookin out the damn window look at that shit again and give me that 20 sack you must be smokin
God, the memories that this brings back. it tickles my nipples.
This is a metaphor for life in the most beautiful way possible.
No doubt about it, no doubt at all!!!
Never really thought much of Rush as I was growing up and oh how wrong I was. This song was played on Planet Rock, and the chorus caught me of guard completely.
Quite easily one of my favourite songs
yeah yo did fuck up dissing rush like that. you better recognize
A Milestone in Time
incredible
Geddy's finest bass playing... all while singing.
This is a great song builds up to a great finale
The bass line is so fucking ridiculous. I love it.
One of my all times favs by Rush. Brilliant!
I love album art, Power Windows is one of my favorites.
It's a kinda Rush, when I listen to Rush x

great song great album greatest band
anytime middle of the night driving with this playing at full volume on the stereo is just awesome
I'm 50 now, and I will tell you this. those of us that grew up entwined in the epic saga Rush grabbed and pulled us though are better people with truth, integrity, and a profound sense of moral fortitude.
thank you gentlemen for my stand, I am hero because of you.
November I'll be 50 too: i thoroughly agree with you, they are philosophical and also prophetic in some ways.
❤❤❤❤❤
57 here.
Thank you!
@Collin Waldroff Yep! The GOOD fight is never over until the very end when GOD says so. The best time to start working on ourselves is right now. The sooner we start, the better we will be when the time comes! 😇
Yes! We are the knights of the ruth, the good and the beauty!
Like the motto from Goethe' s: Das Göttliche / The Devine: Edel sei der Mensch hilfreich
und gut! / Noble should be the human helpful and good!
And this is the mission of the human being!
não dá pra decidir qual é a melhor musica do Rush, mas é essa é ótima.
masterpiece.
Could be have been on 2112 part 2. Stunning musicianship.
Holy fuck
This is the essential live song and it´s twice as glorious on A Show Of Hands.
Rush win never die in my eyes. Love em. My favorite song is scars
RUSH le meilleur groupe de tous les temps sans aucune discussion.
RUSH at the height of their powers. Just awesome.
My sentiment EXACTLY, I actually get EMOTIONAL when I listen to this Tour De Force song. Its very 80s, what with that HUGE keyboard synth sound holding it all together They were probing new ground on this album, really going for it. Just when you think they have done as far as possible they SURPRISE you with yet another masterpiece of music.
crazy as it may sound to some, power windows and signals are my two most favorite albums!
@Mike Kowal I'm just discovering Rush's Roll The Bones album. Wow, it really took me by surprise, its a great album, a lot of fun. You get the impression Rush were having a lot of fun making this one. Seek it out if haven't already done so!!
My two favorites as well!
@DNR5586 I love the guitar solo. Lifeson plays one note, rings out. Plays another, rings out. Same last notes. They are now all ringing together in unison. Amazing . Its not fast and furious, its Alex Lifeson, a pioneer of his own sound, original as hell. He learned how to make three people sound like five (and some help from Geddy on keyboards). They grew with the times, they moved into other colors on the paint pallet. I mourn Neils loss of two family members. Devastating. I wonder if he ever tried to write a song about it.Its great that he's found something other than the band to inspire him and heal the wounds. He loves to ride motorcycles, to see the great outdoors not from a tour bus but from a Harley Davidson. Rush is only on a temporary leave of absence. They will return when all the stars and planets are aligned again.
@Brian Rookard When the songs can recall exactly where, what, when, you were. then you know its more than a great song but also like the soundtrack to those magical moments. I think its amazing how they were able to define the best of the "me decade", the 80s by a powerful inspired set of circumstances where they just roll with the emotions it stimulates. I think Geddy's new found love of synth keyboards in the early 80s was his way of expression himself musically. I think it began with the opening keyboards synth on Subdivisions. I don't know of any 3-piece bands that stayed the course for so many years. I believe they really broke through with Permanent Waves. It was the first Rush album to get serious FM Radio rotation. Friends of mine who weren't big fans of Rush suddenly converted and are still fans of this amazing band.
I saw the Power Windows tour,INCREDIBLE.
I distinctly remember the laser light man image in the background running when rush played this song on dec.5th 1985 in portland maine.
todays time
With respect to the Von Erik's aka the Atkinson's little Chris is still living and loving the Inspiration. thanks

Strength,Power,Struggle,and VICTORY.
Strength,Power,Struggle,and VICTORY.
I hear this, and then their first song, finding my way. It's not even the same band!
Their first album was recorded without Neil Peart, and he writes the majority of their lyrics.
... It's kinda insulting that you thought I didn't know that.
Seemed like you would have wanted an explanation.
that ok, I'm not the same man I was ten years ago, as i wasn't the same then as ten years prior. Every day I am Finding My Way to who I will be in ten more years, untill i have reached The Garden.
I played this twice while watching the men's Marathon at the Rio Olympics.
That's awesome! As a marathon runner myself, there's so much truth in this song.
The key change at 5:11 brings tears to my eyes every time. So emotional and triumphant.
Also cool how it changes back at 5:37.
I can't help but cry everytime I hear that part...
It creates a musical picture of a top-notch athelete who is experiencing the kind of high one often gets from extreme physical fitness. Then again I picture other things too, espeically on the chorus like having the most intense sex with an equally intense woman who matches my physical and mental fantasy. But mostly this song is about being totally alive and completely stimulated to the peak of performance. How many songs can do that even when you listen to it over and over again?
rushguy1 I get the chills when the key change kicks in.
rushguy1 Thank you!! I thought I was the only one who had this emotional reaction to this part of “Marathon” - 🙏🏻
ommmm or magical too....ha
The only band in my life that speaks si-fi to me.God Bless me adoring this band since i saw the Moving Pictures tour in our hometown of T.O....macical
Try Gamma Ray or Iron Savior. Very sci-fi oriented.
All other Universeses are doomed by Eternal Explosion but Humans just dance to Bananarama Viva Evaporation Song Dum Dum Boy Doomsday Song
Ha, I like Rush AND Bananarama.
No Problem we are the Selected species who invented ETERNAL LIFE
My God I love this song! Inspirational, like every Rush song!
And THAT BASS!!!...
very inspirational
2:55 - "Awesome bridge!"
3:22 - "Wow, this is an awesome drum and keyboard section!"
3:43 "Alex...you're making me cry"
4:15 "I think I just heard the greatest Alex Lifeson solo ever."
And that is why Marathon is one of my favourite Rush songs.
This whole album is so underrated! i believe this album illustrates Rush's excellence in all areas of music! Of course, i say this for all their music
Alex is the most underrated Guitarist of the history
Indeed The best solo ever. Alex is a genius

Brilliant tune!
It's been quite a while since I heard this song, I remember humming it in my head back in Summer 2013.
this song in headphones is phenomenal...love it btween 3:22 - 4:14..w/ Neils offbeat tempo w/ the crispy hi-hat sprinkled in...and Alexs solo that kinda comes out of nowhere...just frikn cool..
Best Rush album ,synths are better than guitars.
Aldo Nova another immense canadian musician made 2 amazing albums in the 80's
Incredibubble 💚🎶
Gree with you !!!
one of the best of all time, RUSH
It's absolutely beautiful. True poetry.
Ken M. Taken from Paul who wrote corinthians 1&2
Beautiful is right. The keyboard synth on the choruses actually chokes me up, its just too much soundscape, just too much emotion!!
I don't know what I like more in this tune....Geddy's incredible bass or Neil's unbelievable hi-hat work. I keep saying it, because it's true. These guys are geniuses.
This was the last song I listened to before I enlisted in 1986. Now I am a superintendent for construction of a 5 story hospital. Who would of thought. Back then I was only turning 18
I was in "A" school for ASW training when this came out. Helped me get through that first time away from home in a strange place with new and different people.
I think you're going bald
I Love It : ) ... Very Cool Tune!!
Life's a race but, not a sprint, it's a marathon.
Verdadero show de manos... Rush es mí banda perfecta y favorita
It is the boot camp of eternal life; those who succeed continue on forever, there is no second chance. After the chance for glory rolls on by from east to west, the loosers stay behind. 😇
love this song, always played this one on my long runs.
That chorus gets me everytime
