Rush - Manhattan Project Lyrics
Imagine a time
when it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon that would settle the score
Whoever found it first
They always had before...
Imagine a man
where it all began
A scientist pacing the floor
In each nation
always eager to explore
To build the best big stick
To turn the winning trick
But this was something more...
The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun and it would hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots try to hold it back
Fools try to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say
Imagine a place where it all began
Gathered from across the land
To work in the secrecy of the desert sand
All of the brightest boys
To play with the biggest toys
More than they bargained for...
The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun.
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say
Imagine a man when it all began
The pilot of "Enola Gay"
Flying out of the shockwave
on that August day
All the powers that be, and the course of history
Would be changed for evermore...
The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun and it would hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots try to hold it back
Fools try to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say
The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say

Rest in Peace Mr. Neil Peart !!
to all thumbs down people fuck off
Such an uplifting and hopeful melody with such sorrowful lyrics.
Shout out to Sirius xm! Just heard the cool story about this song that Neil recorded this song using only 4 drums and 4 cymbals. I can totally tell now bcz there are no classic Neil tom tom fills. Very cool story
That snare!!!! R.I. Percussion Professor!
Great song except for that boneheaded line about whoever got it first would be sure to do their worst. What kind of moron tries to say Japan and America were morally equivalent in the 1940s?
Neil’s point is that USING an atomic bomb is humanity at its “worst.” And it was. No matter which nation used it.
@Eric Krauss What Neil said is whoever got it first would be sure to do their worst, they always had BEFORE. So it wasn't just about the act of using an atomic bomb, he was referencing past weapons/warfare. It was a blessing that America got the atomic bomb before Japan or Germany.
As a writer, Neil's Philosophy and Philanthropy showed in his lyrics - his words were the vehicle for Rush's message.
This is my favorite song from the Power Windows album. So good!
There have been many great drummers. And then there was Neil Ellwood Peart. RIP.
RIP Neil. You will be in our hearts forever 👍👍👍💯💯💯💯
RIP Neil Peart you were an awesome drummer
this song went to #10 on the mainstream rock charts in 1986!!!
One of my all time favorite and IMO most solid drum parts in Neil's arsenal! Gonna miss his unpredictable but classic style forever! At least he left us these awesome tunes! Long live Rush!
R.I.P. Neil Peart
R.I.P. NEIL PEART !
RIP - Neil Peart...you inspired many young aspiring drummers as you are a drum 'hero's' drummer! As we former drummers have aged, we now realize your true genius is in your lyrics!
"Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon..."

Just awful. Rush never should have fired Terry Brown. Snakes and Arrows is their only good album after Signals.
Terry wasn't keen on all the excessive keyboards, electronic trigger pads, sampling, and processing of Rush at the time. He wanted Rush to stay on the road with the heavy power trio attack (which I loved too). I guess after S&A album, they couldnt find a happy medium.
WTF do you listen to music?????
everybody is entitled to their opinion. personally, this is my favorite rush album
Rush always kicks ass!!
Great song
Found this song a few days ago, now my favorite :)
Happy 4 u
Kickass tune!
RUSH sempre me leva a um estado de reflexão indescritível. É absolutamente genial a forma como esses três mestres supremos constroem músicas tão elaboradas!
RUSH is spelled RUSH, not Rush!!!

prefer the live ASOH version with the gong bass drum. why does Rush always sound better live?
About the only thing about Rush live that wasn't as good in the albums was Geddy's voice got a lot more... I dunno tired? as the band went on. He definitely wasn't hitting the same registers he used to, and I feel the last few albums like Vapor Trails, Snakes and Arrows, and definitely Clockwork Angels had him singing in lower octaves especially since live his voice tended to sound better on their newer stuff than it did their old songs.
With that said... Rush will always be one of the masters of instruments and technical precision. The drums, bass, guitar, and additional synths were all so perfect and astounding considering it was just three guys making the sound. Both Geddy and Neil are arguably the best their instrument ever had to offer, and while I might argue there are guitarists better than Alex, he is still in the top ten of rock guitarists out there. Those three guys took their instruments and their mastery over them seriously and it was astounding live. Glad I got to see them on their R40 tour, even if that show was both my first and last time seeing them; and while I would love to see them back I think they have earned their retirement.
True musicians always sound better live.
Sounds like Holdsworth!
wow what an amazing song
Essa banda marcou minha vida ! ainda com meus 17 anos ,passei 20 dias numa ilha em Angra dos Reis em 1987 ,e lá ouvia muito Rush nessa ilha ! tempos que não voltam !
This is I don't know my music 😌
Underrated song from an underrated album.
true words
Power Windows is one of my favorite Rush albums . The sound of Geddys Wal bass on this album is sonic ecstasy.
Every note and drum stick is Clear as a bell on this Album.
This song really showcased his vocals as well IMO. The way he ratcheted up the intensity as the song progressed is my favorite part of this song. The message was also so incredible at that time in our history. One of my favorite Rush tunes!
He played a Wal on that album? I just assumed he was still into the Steinberger.
Fuck yeah
Great song!
Awesome song
Love it
Vastly underrated
