Rush - High Water Lyrics
When the waters rose in the darkness
In the wake of the endless flood
It flowed into our memory
It flowed into our blood
Just to see the starry dome
We still feel that relation
When the water takes us home
In the flying spray of the ocean
The water takes you home
Springing from the weight of the mountains
Like the heart of the earth would burst
Flowing out from marble fountains
In the dreams of a desert thirst
Something swam through the jungles
Where the mighty rivers roam
Something breaks the silence
When the water takes you home
I hear the wordless voices
When the water takes me home
Waves that crash on the shoreline
Torrents of tropical rain streaming down
Beyond our memory
Streaming down inside our veins
When something left the ocean
To crawl high above the foam
We still feel that elation
When the water takes us home
In a driving rain of redemption
The water takes me home...

Rush High Water Comments
I don't care what the haters think of this album, this thing is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Listen to this remastered version on an audiophile quality system cranked up and prepare to be blown away.
I remember this tour and them playing this live. This whole album was transcendent..
Hope to see you again someday Neil...when the water takes me home.
Thank you Neil. The best drum variation. to the industry and the fans.
This song has the best start of all RUSH songs
Miss you Neil = God bless Neil Geddy and Alex
Neil at his best. Actually all of them at their best. I will miss Neil tho.
that intro guitar lick.. truly one of his best
This album marked the point where, after having struggled to like almost anything on Power Windows, I finally "gave up:" on Rush - i.e., my expectations of liking future albums were demolished. But I was intrigued to hear Geddy express his dislike for Tai Shan, because in my opinion, it is really a decent composition...even if perhaps in an over-produced Hollywoodish way. Time Stand Still is one of few "post heavy Rush" songs that I always liked, but I just now went back and listened to (most of) HYF and was surprised that I enjoyed High Water, too. Not "heavy Rush" by any means, but the big atmospheric choruses with the synth touches and twanking bass notes are really nicely done.
That's surprising, considering how Power Windows has 3 of the most important Rush songs philosophically in Grand Designs, Middletown Dreams and Mystic Rhythms. I rank it in the top 5 easy, while I have to rank Hold Your Fire in the bottom 5. The synth sound worked on PW while on HYF it was too distracting. And I think the concept for HYF was not meted out properly as opposed to PW. I loved the different riffs on power and its role in our lives. Whatever thematic thread there was going through HYF got kind of lost.
@DionysusAlS You might be right on the thematic approaches to the two albums, but this mid-late 80s Rush period (and, honestly, nearly everything going forward even when they returned to more guitar) never grabbed me too much, musically. I do think PW has an overall better sound than HYF, but it isn't as interesting to me as their older material. Part of that is undoubtedly Geddy's aging voice which as it mellowed, lost that edgy high falsetto that I always loved. You mentioned Mystic Rhythms - I have always appreciated that track for being unorthodox for Rush.
Best track on Rush’s worst album
Living only 200 yards from the beautiful shores of Lake Huron in Northeast Michigan this song hits home!
Jealous of your location... I'm from Jersey, but I've been up to Mackinack and the UP a few times. Unforgettable...
I am from Canada born in Sudbury Ontario 3 hrs east of Sault MI. I have fond memories of motorcycling along Manitoulin Island across the lake from you. Georgian Bay, Wasaga Beach etc...
@Pavlo Ivanchenko Almost every Memorial Day Weekend my Brother heads up to Wawa and White River and goes inland about 100 miles to some of them lakes to fish for Walleye. Great times and beautiful country.
Signals, Power widows, moving pictures and hold your fire the big four of Rush
Coudn't agree any more. I listened through Rush's entire discography, but i still think they really got it going from Permanent Waves onwards. To me, that's where they shaped their trully original sound.
You forgot Grace brother...
The three wish men from the north, bringing the gift of music to a weary world. Uplifting refreshing God bless the Great White North
Enjoying the guitar and synth work in this song.

For quite a while, I've thought that Neil Peart did a hat-tip or four to percussionists in places like Benin or Kenya in this one as well as at least one version of "The Rhythm Method".
I believe he did a bike trip through Africa jamming with traditional percussionists
great album, no doubt.

what the fuck
1987 in a nutshell! Big synths fill the bottom where the Wal didn't. We were headed into the digital ae and I for one wasglad they parted ways with Terry Brown. Rush was being inspired by new age and tho album is a testament to that time...
I loved what The Caveman did for them, But I also felt that Rush wouldn't have been Rush if they didn't have that period of Synths and almost transcendental style of writing, lyrics and musicianship that came with Mp, Sig, Gup, Pw and Hyf.
песня из джея и молчаливого боба)
The best track on a mixed bag of an album. The entire album would have been so much better with a bass with a better bottom end and thicker guitars. Just a little too thin sounding for me. ( At 3:04, La Villa Strangiato reappears.)
saw them live this album. last one. seemed to lose something after Power Windows
Claude, Lol. That is so funny now that you say that, yeah it certainly is. I've listened to this album since it was first released, wore out tapes of it, and have two CDs of it now, one remastered and I never caught that. That would have been cool had Alex done a the little fill from La Villa to go with Neil's La Villa drum part during this song. Yep, I don't know why that makes me laugh but that's funny. Nice catch!
