Rundgren, Todd - Dear God Lyrics

Dear God, hope you got the letter, and
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too

Dear God, don't know if you noticed, but
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't and so do you, dear God
I can't believe in
I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you
Dear God

Rundgren, Todd Dear God Comments
  1. T.... B....

Andy Partridge is a great writer but Todd's production fell short of the bombastic grandeur and "bigness" it was aiming for in both versions. The Pet Shop Boys sound tougher than this.

  2. E.... M....

    This is a joke, right?

  3. L.... R....

Todd does a lot of amazing work, to his credit. The only concern and this is to be expected, musicians produced by Todd, tend to sound like him, as opposed to themselves. Deep down that was likely Andy Partridge's 'beef' even if he couldn't quite explain it successfully at the time. Another example is Patti Smith's album 'Wave'. All you have to do is listen to the song,"Frederick," and you hear her channeling Todd. It's not a bad thing, perhaps is even a great thing, but it's not totally Patti. It probably happens with many producers and we notice it more with Todd Rundgren because he has a strong point of view in all that he does.

  4. v.... ....

Petition the lord with prayer!!! Oh God!

  5. S.... ....

Not even "Weird" Al Yankovic could do it as cheesy as this.

  6. R.... J....

actually fire around 3 minutes tho

  7. M.... O....

    dear God, this is terrible.

  8. s.... l....

awful. xtc must be mad at this horrible rendition. ugh!

  9. A.... P....

Not the worst thing... but what I like about the XTC version is the casual feel. This is just too heavy... the song isn't served well by "heavy-osity." The lyrics are heavy enough...

  10. D.... S....

    Complete shyte.

  11. E.... t....

A new wine cyanide and razor blade aspic, suitable for the children of a dystopian dancehall.
Maybe you shouldn't cover songs written by people you re still pissed off at after 20 years.
And yes i always write like this.

  12. L.... L....

    It's just awful !

  13. B.... P....

The reason I'm not a fan of this version is because the music doesn't jibe with the lyrics. In XTC's version they play on each other to build the story, while the music and lyrics seem to be fighting each other.

  14. S.... H....

author of THE JANNAH FACTOR at amazon.com books sez: No spoiling a whiny-sounding original, I'm afraid. At least this version sounds cooler.

  15. S.... ....

    Thank you Lynn...

  16. D.... 1....

    FUCK YOU TODD!!!

  17. S.... W....

    Oh dear, God help us.

  18. g.... ....

Rundgren didn't want to recreate the XTC version (which he produced), this is his take on it, that's cool, but yes, Partridge's version is better.

  19. T.... R....

This is horrible! How do you mess up an XTC song? Do this! Make a horrible techno version

  20. a.... ....

    Oh...PLEASE!!!

  21. N.... ....

oh todd, why?  you and xtc got it right the first time

  22. E.... A....

...it speaks wonders of the guy. Todd is Godd.

  23. E.... A....

....time of the album was not good. For Todd to pay tribute to

  24. E.... A....

The original was great, Todds production went along way to making it so. Andys attitude (self admittedly) in the studio at the

  25. m.... ....

Doesn't matter, same god, different name.

  26. 3.... ....

Dear god, this is horrible...Andy Partridge weeps...

  27. C.... ....

As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

  28. I.... ....

Get your heads out of your asses if you think that this is better than the original. Better than the original???...not by a long shot.

  29. J.... M....

XTC is Amasing and brilliant....Todd Rundgren is Amasing and Brilliant .But people are people and thats kind of the way it goes. But I think this is Todds way of saying they (xtc) and Todd loved doing that project..(SKYLARKING) (BRILLIANT MASTERPEICE) i think it was (and so many people use this...The Sgt Pepper of our Time....

  30. k.... ....

I am buying this song (assuming it's downloadable on iTunes)! Love this version & love to hear more recent works of Todd's!
    Aloha Todd! See you soon!

  31. J.... M....

i don't really like chritians..i see alot of lies and abuse...But for Todd it saddens me...He was the last thing that kept me having a small spect of faith...

  32. R.... J....

Just my opinion here, but that was pretty sad. I've been a TR fan for many years and it saddens me to hear what is really in the heart of this genius who I have admired for so long, I really didn't expect differently, but still appreciate his talent. Seeing him for the 1st time on 3-26-12 in Dallas

  33. J.... D....

It's a bit quirky if you're used to classic Todd, but then again, quirkiness and experimentation IS Todd...
Also, though a fantastic track from XTC off one of the GREATEST true albums of all time and certainly the definitive version, I kinda dig Todd's take and find it very reminiscent of Tears for Fears' "Mad World". Very grim, very eighties.

  34. I.... ....

Now then....this man had the AUDACITY to make fun of some of Andy Partridge's wordplay during the Skylarking sessions (rhyming umbilical with season-cycle) and then he desecrates a great song with THIS??? Who's laughing now??

    I.... ....

IPN: Desecrating a song that desecrates God, eh?! Gotta love it!

  35. M.... M....

this sucks....original andy partridge cannot be duplicated.

  36. S.... C....

Nothing Todd does disappoints..he is a wizard & a wonder.

    S.... C....

But then, how did he do this?

    S.... C....

@Fehling1 It fits the reProduction theme of the recording. I love it..so real.

  37. R.... Y....

Still Todd after all these years! Wonderful!

  38. C.... M....

    Definitely better than the original!

  39. C.... K....

So much better than the original - it sounds good and angry!

  40. R.... ....

Pretty cool. But then, what else would you expect from TR?
