Rumer - A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics

My life is changing in so many ways
I don't know who to trust anymore
There's a shadow running through my days
Like a beggar going from door to door.

I was thinking that maybe I'd get a maid
Find a place nearby for her to stay.
Just someone to keep my house clean,
Fix my meals and go away.

A maid, a man needs a maid.
A maid, a man needs a maid.

It's hard to make that change
When life and love turns strange.
And old.

To give a love, you gotta live a love.
To live a love, you gotta be part of
When will I see you again?

A while ago somewhere I don't know when
I was watching a movie with a friend.
I fell in love with the actress.
She was playing a part that I could understand.

A maid, a man needs a maid.
A maid, a man needs a maid.

To give a love, you gotta live a love.
To live a love, you gotta be part of
When will I see you again?

Rumer A Man Needs A Maid Comments
  1. F.... P....

A woman has no right to sing this song. Women would freak out if Chris Martin covered “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” It’s just like what Carlin said about white musicians covering Blues songs. They have no right.

  2. w.... ....

Holy Wow!!! Had some big tears going on.

  3. R.... W....

This track is NOT on my copy of the CD "Boys Don't Cry"

  4. m.... ....

Neil Young and Rumer: perfect combination!

  5. E.... ....

    I miss the back music

  6. b.... ....

I do see the comparison to Karen Carpenter's voice. She must be tired of hearing it. Not only does she have a beautiful voice she's also a looker to boot.

  7. S.... B....

I am in love with this woman's voice! She reminds me of Karen Carpenter?

  8. A.... S....

Rumer your simply the best !, hope you get to do a major Bond 007 theme song soon.

  9. G.... C....

    so beautiful 🌌

  10. J.... R....

    Voice of an Angel.

The lyrics of "A Man Needs a Maid" have generated controversy due to interpretations that they are chauvinistic. This is largely the result of Young using the term "maid" with two meanings in the song, one of which is a housekeeper to cook and clean for him, and then leave.

However, the rest of the lyrics make it clear that these lyrics were reflecting Young's own feelings of insecurity, and trying to balance his need for an equal relationship with a woman against his fear of getting hurt by that relationship and just "living alone and hiring help."

This is particularly apparent from the opening lines "My life is changin' in so many ways/I don't know who to trust anymore" before he starts singing about thinking of getting a maid.

And even though he sings of the maid going away after doing the housework, after singing that "a man needs a maid" he goes on to ask "When will I see you again?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Man_Needs_a_Maid_(song)

Why is there no credit given to the composer? I'm surprised that doesn't seem to violate any copyright stuff.

    A.... ....

Because all of the original artists are already credited as the writers in the album. Literally every single song in the album are covers. These are her versions of the songs with all the proper credits, of course they don't violate their copyrights. Even more so when this is a live performance upload. If they're gonna get their credits they would do it on the official MV/audio. Do you even know how copyright works? Or are you just pissed because you are Neil's fan and his name isn't being written all over the place?

  13. a.... l....

Great voice I wish she would do more on TV.

  14. t.... ....

    that is properly gorgeous!

  15. T.... H....

Great ol Neil Young song ! :)

  16. L.... A....

it Isn't sense that a woman sing "A man needs a maid" xD

  17. D.... H....

Wow, she does sounds a LOT like Karen Carpenter!

Her voice is great but this massively misses the big drum sound of the original. I would say they lose 30% of the power of  the song right there!

    D.... H....

@John Dwyer I was just thinking the same thing.

  18. D.... O....

Such a beautiful voice! It's one of my favorite Neil Young songs. I've loved it for years.

  19. s.... ....

Haunting - Neil Young would approve.

    s.... ....

yes i think so " a man is a maid !" Rumer is THE voice of this decade

  20. a.... k....

I wish People would not compare her to Karen Carpenter.. Both Unique.. in the interpretation.. of Songs… Emotional and Heartfelt..x

    a.... k....

    @O O , right.

    a.... k....

@sandinyourshoes Please don't switch the argument - this has nothing to do with hits or success or whatever you call it, my comments were focussed on her voice. You have an imaginary level in your head which you feel everyone has to abide by - what is important is what an individual feels, your opinions have little bearing on others, as do mine.

    a.... k....

@Ian Grace , are you fucking serious? Not about hits? Laugh my ass off! Listen to her all you wish. I am not stopping you. But stop that shit about bringing up Karen Carpenter.

    a.... k....

No one has spoken a word about their achievements, only the similarities between their tones. Rumer's voice does sport qualities of Karen's. They're both deep, warm and soothing. The solidness (realness?) and consistent vibrato just add to that. Even though one should be able to tell them apart easily when compared side by side, given how much clearer Karen's voice is, there's still no denying that Rumer sounds like Karen. No one is even arguing about who is better (Karen clearly wins), they're just surprised at the similarities.
I don't understand why are you acting so stubbornly and defensively. If you are somehow incapable of comparing voices (just similarities, not even who's better!) without bringing up their individual achievements, then you're just blinded by a false sense of pride and superiority. I'm sure Karen would have loved Rumer's voice, unlike bigots like you who'd put everyone down just because they're not your idol.

    a.... k....

@Trahean Hoi Thank you for bringing much the same perspective as I have to the table..... some people tho lol. Good Christmas

  21. S.... ....

Very few cover versions are either as good as or better than the original and this is no exception. Rumer's voice has been compared to Karen Carpenter several times, but it's not really suited to this song and her delivery is just not as good as Neil Young's. Only cover that I've come across that's better than the original is Ellie Goulding's version of Elton John's Your Song.

    S.... ....

@Deep Heat Why should people never say a cover is better than the original? If it is better in their view then people should say it.

    S.... ....

    @Ian Grace

And I should say they are wrong! It's is highly disrespectful to ride the shoulders of giants in using their genius to further your career and then have somebody call your copy superior. People have to learn that it's innovation and ability that we should celebrate, there is too much adulation of this" X Factor Britain's got Nutcases" shite!

    S.... ....

Deep Heat Your view is appreciated but I am sorry I feel Rumers rendition is much better

    S.... ....

    @Ian Grace

But say some repainted the *Mona Lisa* & put a bigger pair of hooters on her. Would you call it better?

It is the *BONES* of a song where the genius lies. You can say you "prefer" a cover but never, never, never that it is better!

    S.... ....

@AWM you've not heard Neil's first performance of this song ('71@BBC) if you think this rendition is remotely close to being better than his.

  22. M.... I....

This isn't bad. Does anyone know the original female artist that covered this song? Seems to have been deleted from history.

    M.... I....

"Original cover" that's an oxymoron right there!

The original song was done by Neil Young off the album "Harvest" I think.

    M.... I....

@John Dwyer "original female artist that covered this song" you da oxy, moron. ;)

  23. .... ....

    female (Niel) Young version.  Gorgeous.

  24. M.... ....

    Brilliant

  25. S.... V....

I thought it was Karen Carpenter's voice, in this particular song.

    S.... V....

Karen's voice is so natural and rich compared to Rumer.  However, I feel that Rumer has that same genius of touching the listener deeply.  Listen to Karen right after hearing Rumer, and you'll hear the amazing brilliance in her voice.  Not to take away from Rumer.  I don't like comparing them - both are great.

  26. K.... W....

A beautiful version of a wonderful song.

  27. I.... G....

A haunting and mesmerising rendition, so so beautiful!!!!

  28. P.... G....

  33. M.... G....

such a great song...based on neil young '72....

  34. b.... ....

This a great song, she has a good voice and I give her a big thumbs up for resurrecting this song but she can't capture the pain and emotion of Neil. I have heard him perform it several times and I got chills every time. This is not a shot to her. I hope she will continue to perform it and bring it to a larger audience.

  35. b.... ....

The hell w/ Adele...this girl has the goods!

  36. M.... c....

    this is perfection

  37. c.... ....

I love your beautiful and warm voice.

  43. M.... M....

The first time I heard her voice I also thought she sounded like Karen Carpenter. That comparison is a huge compliment, as far as I'm concerned.
