I do miss the Richard Carpenter touch; particularly his little piano flourishes and his and Karen's lush multitracked backing vocals, (I'd have loved to hear a wall of Rumers on bgv, but I understand that wouldn't fit the style they were going for here) but this is beautiful nonetheless and thank God for a modern female singer who doesn't try to sound like Billie Holiday or that twee Lily Allen style etc. I know you know what im trying to say, it's 75% of what is pushed this decade.
Yes, she has a bit of Karen and Dusty in her sound but it's natural - obviously not a put on, that's just her voice and it's beautiful. Glad I found Rumer.

Yes, Karen Carpenter's version is a sparkling masterpiece of pop perfection sung by, arguably, the finest female vocalist of my lifetime. Rumer, on the other hand, gives us almost an homage to that original recording, but in a rendition that is haunting & painted in dark, somber tones. It makes you stop and listen. Dazzling, but in a completely different way.

Not Karen, of course, but I don't believe you are trying to be. Others have sung songs like this by original artists and have brought, perhaps, less, more, different or indifferent feelings to those songs, as well. This is one of those acceptions. You kind of want the song to keep going, so, as to sustain the deep serene mood til you slowly drift off to sleep... then... just... float awaaaay.

He would probably think that, although his sister remains irreplaceable, this girl has a wonderful voice. What he probably dislikes is the fact that the recording company is selling her as "The New Karen Carpenter" or "Karen reborn". That is ridiculous. She has a style of her own, a talent of her own, and she does not need that sort of thing at all!

MR TRUCULENT SAYS !!!! Rumer has a great voice, like Karen you can hear every word. The only criticism is Rumer sings it too slow. I don't mean Rumors song Slow, but the cover version of this song could be speeded up, then it would probably be impossible to say who was better. I hope Rob isn't on MANDRAX.

Rumer has such range and purity of tone that comparisons to Karen Carpenter is understandable and I would agree, except...

Karen had the ability to belt out a song while keeping that tone. Rumer, does not attempt to do so. That's okay it isn't a knock on her, it is just a different style that she is obviously comfortable with and highly successful with. I hope she doesn't change, there was only one Karen Carpenter and I want there to be only one Rumer. Beautiful. I became aware of her from Darryl's House and have been a huge fan ever since. You need to see those videos...

Next to Dionne Warwick's 1964 version this has to be the next best. It has the slower original tempo of Dionne's with some tones of Karen Carpenter's vocal. too. I adore the Carpenters' version but the slower tempo with these lovely strings gives it a more tender and magical quality. It's absolutely beautiful. Well done Rumer.
