Rufus - At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) Lyrics

You said you won't
I bet my neck, I bet you will
I'm gonna check my love
You I'm gonna thrill
Can't imagine what you've missed
Can't go on
Meet me at midnight in the light that starts the love

[CHORUS:]
Since there's was you
I changed my mind about it all
Instead of goin' on

I'm gonna settle for a fall
My love, my love will lift you up, up, up

You came into my life and now I realize
Today we love, we might, but it is for sure at midnight

[CHORUS]

You came into my life and now I realize
Today we love, we might, but it is for sure at midnight
At midnight, at midnight, at midnight

  20. J.... H....

Ever since I was a lil' boy, I have been in love with the R&B classics my Parents, Aunts, Uncles, and older Brothers used to play on the radio!!! So, thanks to the power of technological advances....all of us that savor and cherish these memories, can indeed sit back, and enjoy with ever increasing nostalgia the sounds that may sometimes invoke tears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. S.... B....

Geeesuz , if the made the band any smaller , you would need a microscope to see them and good case of subliminal programing and real obvious if you know what's going on .
    A. The record label wanted to peel her off from the group EARLY on , it just took time , GET IT?
    B. Rufus was expendable as a group and with out her , they were done .
C . The controllers decided the trend was going to be single artists , Madonna , Chaka , Bouncy , Cardi F so and so forth .
D . The album cover is really sick , but it projects their intentions , preparing the public for a change . See how they get down ?

    S.... B....

    Sad But True Ugh

    S.... B....

She was leaving Rufus because the band took her for granted. She even wrote a song about it and recorded it with them. This cover is her revenge.

I haven't heard this song since I was a kid and now I'm almost 50

I remember when this record came out. I loved it at first listen and ran out and got the album. Played it to smithereens. This jam is almost overwhelming in its power and energy. From the first note, it's off to the races at top speed and never lets up until the last beat of the fade out.

On this day in 1977 {March 5th} Rufus featuring Chaka Khan performed "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift you Up)" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'*...
At the time the song was at #45 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, five weeks later it would peak at #30 {for 2 weeks} and it spent twelve weeks on the Top 100...
    And on April 3rd, 1977 it reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
Between 1974 and 1983 the Chicago funk band had twelve records on the Top 100 chart, two* made the Top 10,
"Tell Me Something Good" {#3 in 1974} and "Sweet Thing" {#5 in 1976}...
Chaka Khan, as a solo artist, had nine charted records on the Top 100...
Ms. Khan, born Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi Khan, will celebrate her 65th birthday later this month on March 23rd {2018}...
    * The group just missed having a third Top 10 record when "You Got The Love" peaked at #11 {for 2 weeks} on December 8th, 1974...

    s.... ....

Incorrect, Rufus had a third single in the top ten 'Once you get started.'

    s.... ....

I wish I could see footage of the Rufus and Chaka performing this song on "American Bandstand" from 1977.

  43. j.... t....

This the song that introduced me to Rufus feat, Chaka khan. For me, Ask Rufus was their best album!!

  44. P.... M....

I think I had every album this group made in the seventies. This particular cut was always one of my favorites because I was always so impressed by the musicianship of the band and the superior arrangement. I grew up listening to talented musicians and singers like Chaka and Rufus.

For background singers this has to be a fun one to belt out!!

  47. o.... w....

I love the last third of this song! I need to find a way to a have an alarm tone on my phone at midnight!

  48. T.... ....

Chaka Khan may have been the original Bad Bitch!

  49. V.... H....

    Almost midnight!!

  50. b.... ....

those fills at the end Gosh!!!!

  51. A.... W....

The true queen of soul--nothing against Aretha but Chaka has a sound that's completely original. Never forget when I met her--she's as amazing as her music. Love you always Chaka!!!

  52. C.... ....

This is the kind of music from the windy city that you can't get enough of. Chaka Khan and Rufus defined that kind of music. I give this a thumbs-up. :)

  53. D.... E....

I don't know why I always picture Bernadette Stanis dancing to this song (Thelma from Good Times) I remembered when she danced to Native New Yorker on a talent show episode of Good Times I always thought she was pretty and I loved that episode 🤗

    D.... E....

Thelma was beautiful! Good episode, but I always envision George Jefferson gettin' down to this. ; )

    D.... E....

This song did play on Good Times before. That was the episode Florida's nephew was running from the FBI and whenever they would play their record player the lights would go out.

    D.... E....

    @Mike Sheng
I don't remember this song, but I remember Thelma dancing to "Stuff like that."

  54. z.... ....

this song makes me feel some type of way

    z.... ....

their music has always filled me with longing

  55. V.... M....

My favorite song of theirs...The ending is a knock me out.... When all the horns and all be going...and she just keeps saying Midnite,Midnite .. Have to sing along everytime..also backed up by the legendary Tony Maiden and Bobby Watson on bass And guitar and Andre Fisher on Drums.

    V.... M....

I remember someone in the group saying she was able to compete with the horns, vocally. They're not many singers that have that type of range and power.

    V.... M....

Those drums have to had been played by God himself.

    V.... M....

I hit repeat at least 5 times on this daily

    V.... M....

Love this song too. Have the poster with the album.

  62. R.... S....

I love this group but this is one of my favorites by them!!!

  63. M.... ....

Just look at the album cover and that will tell you why they broke up....

    M.... ....

MrBod69 Exactly. But it wasn't Chaka. The company wanted the focus on her. Tony is a good friend to this day

    M.... ....

  64. C.... J....

I never knew the first lyric.

    I always heard,

"...you say you wanna break my neck I bet you will..."

And I KNOW that's not what she's singing.

    Anyone know what it is?

    :)

    C.... J....

    You said you won't
I bet my neck, I bet you will
    I'm gonna check my love
    You I'm gonna thrill

    LIFT YOU UP!

    C.... T....

At midnight at midnight at midnight at midniiiiiight!!!!

  70. S.... ....

This was one of Rufus' #1s. Why is it never played on the radio???

    S.... ....

    SOULTRAlN
I'll never understand, it's one of the most powerful songs ever!!!!

    S.... ....

Probably because it's more of a party song. A lot of songs that are older but still get radio airplay are ballads or mid tempo songs

  71. S.... ....

It's time for a Rufus reunion. Chaka don't even need to be there. I'm cool with the fellas playing just the instrumentals.

    S.... ....

    SOULTRAlN
without Chaka, there is no Rufus.

    S.... ....

@Ronald W Many years ago I think there was talk about it but according to Chaka the numbers (money) didn't add up. Now That they are older and the demand for their talent isn't as high perhaps....boy don't we all wish!

    S.... ....

    @Reginald Dawson
Actually in 2001 Chaka and Rufus did a reunion, they toured with Earth, Wind & Fire. Rahsaan Patterson opened for them.

    S.... ....

Ronald W How was that show!? I missed that one!

  72. n.... ....

This song was my transition in going from "kiddie"pop music to my adult phase. I ordered it from Columbia House, of all places.  It is a testament to what glorious African American music used to be 70's.

    n.... ....

Columbia was there!Earth, wind&fire,Emotions,Denise Williams,oh my God...

  73. m.... o....

    chaka.. my girl can blow

  74. W.... ....

Please, God, let me hear her perform this live. Just once...pretty please!

    W.... ....

We are going to have to ask Chaka to do this.  She just might!!!

    W.... ....

Ronald W Only vocalist I know that could possibly do justice to this is Minnie Riperton... but we lost her WAY too early

    W.... ....

    WenD1908 Ledisi could do it

    W.... ....

    @Mairim Sulaiman
     @Funkbassist7
And Rachelle Ferell (pardon the spelling).

And I think I did see CK sing this in Connecticut (Mohegan Sun Arena) when Rufus toured with The Elements/EWF there, albeit 10+ years ago. As a matter of fact: There was a time (early-mid 2000's?), she would start off her shows with this song.

There may even be a live recording or broadcast from some late night show back in the day that I vaguely recallll?

  75. J.... A....

THIS WILL ALWAYS BE MY MUSIC😂

    J.... A....

    Mines too! "ALWAYS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤

    J.... A....

Jonathan Adkison mine too Jonathan!❤️❤️❤️ it!

  76. A.... E....

That's Chaka music asI I feel and think of her...

  77. b.... ....

I was playing this during class while my students were taking their notes and they asked me to play it again. I was surprised they were really listening

  78. D.... W....

Lalomie Washington was the other woman on the vocal track.

    D.... W....

Washburn. Lalomie Washburn. RIP. She also wrote the song along with Tony Maiden.

  79. t.... d....

Used to play this for hours the night before a track meet this, is what ran through my mind at the point in my race (400 meters) when your muscles start to shut down. It means a lot to this day, anytime something becomes difficult!!!

    t.... d....

My first real love and friend. Brings back many beautiful memories.

  82. 6.... ....

The band is tight af. Chaka is baad af. glad I know this day and time.

  83. S.... 5....

This voice is not far behind Aretha's for sheer power and beauty.

    S.... 5....

I think that Aretha's voice sounds sweeter than Chaka's myself. Otherwise, not much in it. Chaka can sure belt them out, but Aretha seems to me to have the edge with the tone of her voice.

    S.... 5....

    Stan 59
I absolutely agree with you, Aretha had a sweetness to her voice like no other, powerful and great range. However, Chaka is in a league of her own, I'm not going to be biased, I will be honest Chaka voice is like a kitten one minute (Everlasting love, Sweet Thing, My funny valentine and TTF) and the next she's belting no other singer EVER. You see Aretha set a standard for singing in the 60's and Chaka came along and raised it to another level.Natalie Cole and Patti have always said Chaka does thing other singer couldn't. Aretha herself was aaking "who's that singer" when Rufus first hit the scene. Riffs, runs, scats growls, baritone low notes, hit many notes that sopranos cannot reach and can make love to a song like no other. Please check out "Night in Tunisia, Got to be there, Be Bop Medley and Alfie live(1995)" and you will see why she is considered one of the most versatile singer of all time and can do things MOST singers can't.

    S.... 5....

I see your point. Put like that, really there is no competition, I had never really thought about the fluidity of Chaka's voice before; I guess I always found Aretha's so spellbinding. She must be good if Aretha took notice!

    S.... 5....

    @@Ronald W
    Agreed!!
Aretha's essentially a Gospel singer with a beautiful voice.

Chaka's essentially a jazz singer (with all it's swing, fluidity, improvisation, creativity) possessing a great voice/instrument!

Love me some Aretha. But I agree with you. Chaka, just feels the music and does things in her own funky way that just make you say wow!

    S.... 5....

Ahh but seriously people...look at how Aretha was able to redo, most masterfully, Dionne’s greatest even better than Dionne ( who the music was specifically written for). Aretha set the standard and nobody can take that away from her.
    Love me some Chaka, though!!!

  84. K.... S....

those HORNS! RUFUS was the BAND of LYFE!
