This song is brilliantly done but it is a very dark song

Passions lead to other passions just like a love for windsurfing can lead to a love for a woman.r Just like the windsurfer yearns to accomplish the impossible by outrunning the sun, the love tries to keep his partner that is out of reach and turn around the doomed love destined to fail.


Regardless, these attempts are food for the soul even as the body suffers for falling short. For me that is the profound beauty of this song... If you cannot see this take up windsurfing or loving.

I was in Kos a few years ago. I used to go to the bay and watch windsurfers as the sun was setting. Roy you are absolutely brilliant.

I'm well aware of that. Belive it or not but I couldn't find that many windsurfing pictures on the beach so I had to take the next best thing, regular surfers. I wanted the pictures, somewhat, to match the lyrics. So If had to use a regular surfer in some pictures, so be it.

My father loved Roy Orbison and bought all his music. I grew up with it, and remember this song as a small boy, sitting in my dad's pickup truck on the beach, watching a tropical wind churn the ocean to a froth. It was one of those moments when young boys feel as if the world would be a magic adventure forever, and as if they would always stay young. When I was 11 my father went out on a windsurfer one day and he specifically came to get me so I could ride on the board with him. I rode with him and thought about "our song." This is still my biggest favourite of all the Orbison song that my dad and I enjoyed together. It always brings back these two happy memories, and the sad one when I'm reminded that now I have to enjoy it without him.

I'd been a fan of Roy Orbison since I was old enough to appreciate good music. I got to see him in Denver when I was just a kid - must have been late 60s or early 70s. One day, I had an accident on my forklift at work. I'd had a smoke on the way to work, so when the company asked for a drug test, I refused, which cost me my job. The next day I learned that Roy had died on what was my 32nd birthday. So, here I am without a job, stitches in my face, and a diabetic wife - and Roy Orbison has died! I've never felt so blue. That Barbara died on the same day is poetic.

I´m italian descendant and i like italian singers, but Roy has the real American voice, you know, is dramatic, he had the talent, the range, the style, he´s the voice of AMERICA. From Brazil a big Hug.

I wouldn't personally describe Elvis's voice as tonally beautiful as such, but the timbre was unique to him, completely natural & unforced, & within one or two notes, you could identify him. His high baritone had an enormous range in musical genre, & there was very little that he couldn't sing exceptionally well. He possessed a much bigger range in musical genre than Roy, even though his top voice was 2 notes shorter. Though he wasn't a high note singer as such like Roy, in the song, Padre, he did hit a full voice high C. He also had soul & heart in his voice. So much so, that even after the downers had taken their toll on his vibrato & top voice, he carried so much feeling into the voice & phrasing, that he could still move you emotionally. In a similar way, Sinatra had an averagely good light baritone, that he made sound much better than it was, by being a superbly good empathetic storyteller & musical phraser. All voices have a natural tonal signature, & providing that the technique mostly abides by natural laws, & isn't too contrived & artificial, the timbre will be pleasant at least. Opera singers not only have to encompass a minimum of 2 & a half octaves, but they must also control those notes at full power, with no use of falsetto. Roy's voice, though smaller, had equal head register technique to an operatic tenor, & could sing a reasonably good high C, & a falsetto derived high D. At 2 & a half octaves without falsetto, Roy had a very good technique by an accident of nature. All he needed was practice, & the voice found itself without requiring tuition. So Roy's technique must already have been 95% in place before he ever thought about a singing career. Which explains why he would accept no credit for it. For him, it was just always there. Many modern opera singers have contrived artificial resonance & register positions, which make their voices sound unnatural to the ear, & rob them of the warm sympathetic timbre that draws you to them. Personally, I don't mind a slightly variable technique in pop singers, Roy included, because he too could be way off voice at times. If a singer has heart & sympathetic phrasing, he can easily carry over a vocal off day.

Steve Perry, Elvis, Tom Jones, Roger Plant, Jay Black, Andy Williams, Freddie Mercury, Roger Whittaker, singer for Boston, etc.

If Orbison had a sore throat, Jay Black could have filled in.

The song says clearly, "windsurfer" so whats with the pictures of the surfer guys?. Not the same thing, might be similar but tell a surfer to try to use the wind to move forward ... :))))

I really tried to find windsurfer pictures when they sat on the beach but i didn't find any so I took the next best thing, regular surfers. I was hoping people would just think: "They probably taken the sails off while they're on the beach"
