Rosenstock, Jeff - USA Lyrics

Dumbfounded, downtrodden and dejected
Crestfallen, grief-stricken and exhausted
Trapped in my room while the house was burnin'
To the motherfuckin' ground

I saw the sign but it was misleading
I fought the law, but the law was cheating
Screaming for help, but somebody keeps on
Telling me to settle down

Please be honest, tell me was it you?

Clerk at the midwestern service station
Striped uniform, giggling at catch phrases
Look in her eyes we're up to something
Oh, it doesn't matter now

Man in a crossover with his family
Sketched in decals on the window smiling
Driving parallel in the lane beside me
Oh, it doesn't matter now
But please be honest
Tell me was it you?
I won't hate you
I just need to know
Please be honest
Tell me was it you?

At first he thought it was the undertow
But he was dragged to the bottom of the lake
By a couple of kids saying, "it's a joke"
Though he didn't know any of their names
As they held him down, the crowd got loud
And they cheered when they thought he had escaped
When the anchor needed something for the 10 o'clock
What could they say?
Oh what else could they say?

They said
"Well, you promised us the stars
And now we're tired and bored."

    frarfarf

    the bridge/outro bit is weezerish

    Rene Itah

    @frarfarf never say that again

    frarfarf

@Rene Itah why, they stink now but early weezer is awesome, Jeff has covered it before

    Rene Itah

@frarfarf i hate them, theyve always just been an outlet for RC to vent about not getting laid

    frarfarf

@Rene Itah I'm more about the music than the lyrics... first song off the 2nd album is all about how much ass he gets BTW

    Punk never dies...... sugooii tunes

  23. Colin Daniel

Not much of a punk fan, but yeah this is cool.

  24. Colin Daniel

    Rethony Grettano sent me.

  25. Great Zaggurat of Ur

I feel like i hate the vocals but the music is much better than what would normally be behind the "punk" vocals and it veers instead into post punk/new wave territory where it makes the vocals almost deliberately bad and in the context of the music and lyrics makes everything come together in a really compelling way. You have my ear mr.rosenstock

    Fien

Jeff's my favorite artist and I introduced him to a friend. Said friend described it as "Some greasy punk rolling around in a dumpster with a busted guitar"

I agreed completely and he now loves Jeff too. The beauty of flaw.

  26. Please Don't

Today is always a good day with new Jeff Rosenstock

  27. joan

    what a tune
    damn!!!!

  28. o00thunderhawk00o

ohhhh its like a shitty version of say anything

    o00thunderhawk00o

they have similarities, i was being surreptitious. i do listen to a lot of musics all the time but if i listened to this band or say anything i wouldn't compare them you know how people compare shit that sounds similar to them its subjective yo and this was my first impression i am sure some people saw that comment and knew not to look to into it. im always one to say each band sounds unique in some way

    Matthew Browning

i like this thread. This was my first impression, as well. and by no means is that a bad thing.

    mtsi21

I've been listening to Jeff and Bomb the Music Industry for years now, love the guy and the band to death and wish nothing but the best for them.

Also, "a shitty version of Say Anything" is mostly accurate, it's part of their appeal more than much else.

    Sick Randy

    o00thunderhawk00o

I’m a huge Say Anything fan, and also a huge fan of Jeff and BTMI (not a big ASOB fan though).

Jeff doesn’t sound like Say Anything, and even if he did it’s not like Max Bemis invented this style of music.

    peri

o00thunderhawk00o max is Jewish, idk about anybody else in SA, but what does that have to do with anything??

  29. Molten_

what an amazing way to start 2018

  30. Zamkaizer

Holy crap the Gimmick! sample in the middle of the song, though.

    Molten_

Holy shit I knew it sounded familiar. That's awesome.

    darkzero226

my dumbass can't hear it and i've listened to the gimmick soundtrack a LOT. mind pointing it out?

    Zamkaizer

It's from the track "Sophia" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDzXxdxWFl8 . Only caught it because I'd been mainlining NES chiptunes over Christmas break.

    darkzero226

yeah i wasnt able to pin it down myself lmao. thanks!

  31. originofnoise
