Rosanne Cash - The Way We Make A Broken Heart Lyrics

Just one more kiss, she'll have to miss this night with you
Now you're guilty of this secret love, as I am too
You'll get used to telling lies, feeling sorry when she cries
Now that the strings aren't attached, you'll catch on, we've done our part
Oh, and this is the way we make a broken heart

Lesson number one, we've just begun to hurt her so
And with lesson two she'll long for you when lights are low
And we get to lesson three when she gets down on her knees
And begs you to stop at the door just before she comes apart
Oh, this is the way we make a broken heart

Now we've made a trail of tears for her to follow
And we've thought of every line that she might swallow

And with lesson four, there'll be no more for her to bear
And on some dark night we'll dim the lights on this affair
Then she'll find somebody new and he'll likely hurt her too
'Cause there must be millions just like you and me, practiced in the art
Oh, and this is the way we make a broken heart
Oh, and this is the way we make a broken heart

Ay yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
This is the way we make a broken heart
Ay yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
This is the way, this is the way, this is the way, this is the way
Oh, this is the way we make a broken heart

Dear W. Lewis When i was a truck driver and a ex military Canadian soldier some years ago i was in your town about the same time if i was there i would have taken the bullet for you. I believe in honor and death. I believe we all should be good to each other. My wife has passed and i still listen to this music. My brother met her father here in Canada JOHNNIE.
Always be the best and stand for what we have. If you don;t like where your live i will help you pack. --- JOHN

  19. K.... ....

One of the most under rated singers of her time. Fabulous singer, voice and personality. Never got the credit she deserved!

    K.... ....

    Abruptly agree

  20. G.... M....

The song writers now put out nothing but crap. Makes no sense. The singers think they have to make it a little wilder than the last one. They have no style. Just one piece of crap after another. I don't even listen to the radio anymore. It's not worth my time.

  21. S.... D....

The Cashs and the Carters are nice people.

  22. F.... C....

Everytime one of her songs comes on it is so instantly soothing. What a great voice.

This song hits home for me so hard. I cheated on my late Ex-Wife a lot in the early '80s. I left her on her knees at our front door begging me not to go out running around on Christmas Eve of 1983. Trust me; I got my dose of Karma when my so-called best friend almost took her away from me during the summer of 1984. I didn't think I still loved her before that happened. We got back together in late 1984 from a few things; the one big thing I believe was my MeeMaw hading prayer meetings (vigils) for us to reconcile. The bad thing was I couldn't get the thought of "him" rubbing all on her & etc. Then my MeeMaw passed away in Feb of 1989. Then we only lasted till March of 1991. Then she died in Dec 1997 from getting Hep C through a blood transfusion after surgery in 1993. We were working on getting back together early in 1997 if she had divorced him, but sadly it wasn't meant to be! I'm not writing this to be all personal. Hopefully, it might help another guy to see what might be in his future if he's walking the way I did. I was lucky enough to remarry in Sept of 2004 to a precious lady. You couldn't pay me to ever cheat on her!

The words to this song was me many years ago. I listened to this song to, to try & justify what we were doing. It was wrong but a 10+year marriage came from it. And while I have a beautiful son from it, the marriage was nothing but karma waiting to happen & it did. How you find them is how you lose them!

    M.... N....

    Soooo true

    M.... N....

Life is a song, too. Hope yours is going well.

Also, before this recording in 1987, Rosanne recorded this song as a duet with its composer John Hiatt, in 1983. Her then-husband Rodney Crowell produced, but the song failed to take off the way he believed it should have. So in '87, he produced this recording with Rosanne singing it solo, (except for her backup vocalists), and a different arrangement. That time, the song got its much-deserved notice. Other known artists have covered it as well, but none of them took it to big-hit status. I believe Rodney deserves much of the credit, because he's such a fine songwriter and musician as well as a great vocalist in his own right. He also has an outstanding gift for arranging songs.

I got to meet Roseanne and everybody in the video while they were making this. I was a Louisville police officer and my wife was working security for them so she called me and I went downtown to see it.. Roseanne signed my album cover and talked with me for quite a while. She was very nice. A couple of months later I was shot in the chest and she heard about it somehow. I got a poster and a personal note form her while I was still in the hospital. Been her number one fan for 30 years now!
