Rory Gallagher - The Cuckoo Lyrics

Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird,
And she warbles as she flies.
And she never holler cuckoo,
'Til the 4th day of July.
Jack of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds,
Well I've known you of old.
Well you've robbed my poor pockets,
Of the silver and the gold.
I'm goin up up on a mountain,
I' m gonna build me a whiskey still.
And I'll sell you one bottle,
For a twenty dollar-bill.
I'm going up upon a hillside,
And I'm gonna stand lookin' down.

So I can see my little baby,
Whenever she is walking around.
Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird,
And she warbles as she flies.
Well she brings us glad tidings,
And she never tells no lies.
Jack of Diamonds Jack of Diamonds,
You're the meanest card I know.
Well you robbed my poor pockets,
And you nearly stole my soul.
Well, I'll eat, when I'm hungry,
And I'll drink, when I'm dry.
And if some woman don't shoot me,
Then I'll live a long time.
Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo
Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo Ohh-hoo.

Came here from comments on TVZ version - have to say I prefer the vocal phrasing of TVZ. Rory's guitar work here is nice, though.

He gives the lyrics a logical feel, more than most versions heard. On the less melodic banjo, a good singer tries to capture the call ... the warble ...of the Cuckoo bird with the tone of the tune. This singer has a different approach. Maybe banjo purists gave the dislikes. I love it. ❤️🎶

    wonderfull!!

  9. e.... m....

Like it but I prefer Doc Watsons version.

  10. M.... ....

    How does this have dislikes???
This is "unplugged" and live with just two instruments...
Only Rory could pull off such tremendous "feel" and "tone" for such a tender blues song..
    RIP Rory Gallagher :-(

    This is only one guitar!

    And his voice :-)

Rory was and is still a King amongst men. As a young man I had the undeniable pleasure of seeing him play and meeting him once. My love of music in many formats came from Rory's interpretation of old Muddy Waters blues to Lonnie Donegan's skiffle, and many places in between, but his own brand of music still gets me going today, as it did 40 odd years ago. No one like you Rory!!

Me and the brother always loved it when Rory sang this, the dancers didn't know how to respond at Armidollo in Tuam Co. Galway . Those old days of the dance halls in Ireland. Rorys trio used to rock Tuam. What a great guy.

I Feel Rory Gradually lost the thickness of his Cork Accent as he got older Check out his interviews from the 1990s....There is an interview of him from the 60s when He was very young and he is very shy but has a very thick Cork accent

    M.... M....

Everyone's accent changes a bit if they leave their native country, even temporarily sometimes. My daughter came back from a year in Whitely Bay with a very subtle Geordie accent. It went a way completely in a short time. You go home, and revert more to your native accent, I think.

  27. R.... Q....

A truly great version of this song; almost brings tears to my eyes. I agree no one had the different styles of playing down as good as Rory. Such a shame I never saw him perform. He will live forever in his music because unlike the body, good music never dies! RIP Rory.

  28. G.... ....

    @ezzoff1
how often did i read this now under rory's songs ? :D

  29. d.... ....

brilliant, very haunting in its own way love this song, love rory what i would give to see him play just once.............. nobody comes close to him,

Outstanding stuff. There s no one got even near him to this day. Still the king. Of musicians. And always will be. For what's about in this modern world. I am still looking for who will be next in line. Great Irish blues with loads of soul and eccentric innovation.

  31. A.... ....

GReat to see there are still some good music judges out there. The Best of the Very best RIP Rory

  33. l.... ....

Such a haunting Song, played so well by the G-Man crisp picking skill's he had all form's of playing down to pat.

  34. N.... M....

What a great version of this song, which was done by many of the San Fransico psychedelic bands in the late 60's, sometimes known as Jack of Diamonds. It is great to hear Rory stripped down to acoustic, finger picking with fantastic vocals on a great folk tune (where ever it came from) So Sorry Rory is no longer with us. Fantastic choice to the person who made this available for all. Thanks!

  35. M.... K....

    Rory........

  36. Y.... ....

I love this song !!! I like more than the Janis Joplin version (I really don't know who is the true author of the song...)
    Cheers

    Y.... ....

Totally agree Rory's is the best version. It's an old English folk song, adopted by American's in the 1800's. Seems like the words change a lot! Many people have recorded it. The earliest I found on YouTube is Clarence Ashley's from the late 1920's. Some versions, like Peter Paul and Mary's, and the Everly Brother's is in a different key, I think. (not minor). Sounds very different.

  37. G.... D....

    I prefer Jet Brennan's version.

  38. E.... A....
