Just saw the documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” last week, and it included a brief clip of her singing this with Johnny Cash on his TV show (in 1969, I think). I had forgotten all about this song, but do remember hearing it on the radio as a kid. (For some reason, I favored the country station growing up ... )

Quite a different version than the Carters, lovelier because it's not as morbid. I don't believe Dolly was ever credited for singing harmony, I think she did it as a favor and Linda returned the favor on some of Dolly's songs.

Im thinking that the song is about that feeling you have after a break up... Somewhere far away in your mind you know it isnt true... But right now, the feeling of never ever beeing able to love again is just taking over.. But, life has a tendency to surprise us - no exceptions:)
